i have done a test on daytona speedway to see how much speed you loose with a wing and the result was that i was FASTER with a wing. only 0.100 sec but still faster. i have set up the wing to 10 so the loss of hp was about 12. in the straight the cars was running togheter. this with a spoiler set to 10. my silvia the other night was set to 5, so its all about draft. if you have 15 or 20 hp more you can be slower by 2 seconds in practice and still have the chance to pass on the first straight. this sucks

The hp and torque plays a bigger role with acceleration compared to top speed. Also important is the other mods you pick and how you tune the transmission. I'm willing to bet both Grenade and i had way more than 12hp on you. We were adding weight to our cars, not removing it.

The time i was behind per lap was clearly in the esses. It could have been my suspension set up or it could have been my added weight. What ever it was, i was on the edge of traction and still running a clean line before you nosed in on me.

Sometimes you just dont have the car to finish first place...whether it is lack of handling or lack of passing power. We had a good battle going on and all you had to do was wait for me to make a mistake or get close enough before a straight to draft pass...instead you pushed me off the track and ruined what was otherwise a great race.

What were your specs for the tune (Silvia)? I was about half a second off the fastest lap time, maybe a little more, and was getting drafted and passed quite easily by chuyler and grenade but wasn't ever really able to draft until the very end of the straight. It didn't matter if I had multiple car lengths on them.

I would be curious to know what everyone's hp/weight ratio was.

On a side note, I purchased an HDCP compliant graphics card, as well as an HDMI capture card, and will try to record some replays. Here's my pov from GVE-R in the Silvia. I built my desktop in late 2006 so the quality isn't going to be HD but it's clear enough to see. Don't really understand why the quality is so bad when the .avi I made is over 1GB in size and looks great before it goes up to Youtube.

Guys, a lot of your acceleration problems were for 2 reasons.

If you are not geared short enough for a track like GVE-R, then you lose quite a bit of acceleration because of that. Secondly, if you are on a fast track like Suzuka and you didn't short shift in your top gears, you probably lost time.

Depending on your tune, the Sylvia HP/TQ graph fell off hard after 7500 RPMs. So much so, that in my testing, I was better off shifting at 7500 then waiting for the redline.

This 100% depends on whether you are max tuning the car or detuning for a broader power band. I ended up detuning my car a bit to exploit what I saw was a way to run super short gearing and still keep up on the straights. I ran my gears for suzuka like I had a 145 mph top speed, but used my final gear to drop it way back and get my top speed back up where I needed it to be.

Since I detuned my engine significantly, when I shifted into top gear, I was at like 5700 RPMs which my engine was nearly making full power out. Had, I been with the stock engine max tuned, I couldn't have used this strategy.

I am not saying that is the best strategy as sometimes I prefer max tuning regardless. An example of this being the Green Goblin. There is very little detuning in that car.

On one lap of daytona (circle track). I was able to gain nearly 2 seconds by short shifting with a non detuned car. This is very important to note and try to take into consideration when racing. Remember this though. Short shifting really only does you good in gears where you don't already have high multipliers (transmission ratios). Short shifting in 1st-3rd gear is generally not beneficial.

Only once you get into gears where the amount of torque being sent to the wheels is similar to the engine output that short shifting shows its benefits.

I usually shift earlier the higher gear i'm in like you suggest. I don't like to mess with gearing too much, but i will tweak 5th gear a bit if there is a long straight or i expect to get some drafting speed.

So, who's hosting tonight? What theme are we going with?

I dunno, chylur didnt update yet, but sunday is usually 1980's

Umm, 80s night tonight....

Sorry, havent been in front of the computer all wkend...on my ipad now and copy/paste is a pain in the butt.

Regarding gearing, i had my top speed set to the lowest setting, then i changed the final gear ratio to increase the top speed to something reasonable. Finally, i increased the 6th gear to further increase top speed. My theory is that i would pull hard exiting the turn before the straight through 4th and 5th...but i still had 6th tall enough not to run out of gear in the draft. Drivers could catch me at the end of a straight, but by then it would be too late to pull off the pass.

You were geared correctly for Gve-R. Your speed was 140 right before your turn in which was the same as mine. Granted, I was braking a bit earlier then you. But, you couldn't have been much off. You were basically using the same strategy as me that race.

I will be out till Wednesday as well. Moving this weekend.

Hey, what capture card did you get? I need to get one.

I don't know if you know much about video capture over HDMI but do some research. I had never done it before and came up with a solution but it took a few days of testing and some extra cost for a license for Fraps for the actual recording of the capture. As I mentioned, I also needed an HDCP compliant graphics card to even see the video from the PS3.

That card in particular doesn't do 1080p, only up to 1080i, which didn't matter to me because of the age of the system I would be capturing on. 720p would be plenty. The one card that I've seen the most while searching that does 1080p would be the BlackMagic Intensity Pro or something for around $200 I believe. You still would have to jump through hoops to record the capture because of HDCP.

I got booted and had to sign into PSN again but couldn't connect to either anyone's lounge or the open lobby. Uh oh...

My ps3 completely locked up, so I just quit for the night. Trial mountain was fun though.

My just froze as I was trying to enter Suzuka. Hopefully Twichie, Nic and Chuyler were able to race.

my roommate was watching youtube all night so i went to bed.

We waited a few minutes then started the race. Not much action with only 3 of us on the track.

Cool. I wish my PC was in the same room as my PS3 though. I'd like to find something that would work with my laptop.

👍 nice video Esh, hope to see more of these for the coming series... the sound made all the difference.

Yeah, much better than my digital camera recording. Maybe I'll just splurge on one of those. I've been meaning to convert my family's old videos to digital so I can use that as an excuse to get one.

i started a 450pp group. I sent invites to nearly everyone in the thread.

Thanks Booch!

Got booted from my own lobby. Had to restart ps3. Room is open again.

I joined. Thanks.

Also, I think I'm going to just reset my router before any sessions from now on. I've been booted a lot lately.

reset router and clear the cashe!

Some good racing last night. A 3 way battle at Grand Valley deserves recording for my YouTube channel. I'll have to do that later.

Just a note about Deep Forest Reverse. Someone asked about driving over the concrete in free run. I said "Don't make a pass by driving over the concrete". I clearly remember saying that yet AOK made two passes during the race by cutting people off on the concrete. I'm pretty sure everyone else understood that ruling because in the replay drivers got very pushy with him afterward. I ran all 5 laps without ever putting more than 2 wheels on the concrete. I think the ruling for this track should be to stick to GTP_OLR and at least attempt to stay on the track. I really don't know why the track is designed like that to be honest.

Oh, and here's a video I uploaded from Sunday night's racing. WiiFreak and I had a great battle at Laguna. He made numerous pass attempts but couldn't make them stick because I was forcing him to pass on the outside. Eventually he got a good run on me out of the elbow and up the hill to get the win. Anyway, this can serve as a good example of defensive driving for laps 1-4. If someone is behind you and you know they're going to draft you. Stay inside and give them room to attempt a pass on the outside. Chances are, they won't make it stick unless they clear you for a fast line through the next turn.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but maybe a FF 500PP night could not only be fun, but be a way to give a little back to the community: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=209217

There is a FF 500PP tuning challenge. Maybe we build out several of these, do several races (at GVE and other tracks alternatively), and give our feed back on the tunes.

Just an idea, and it may be a bit late of an idea.

I saw that...might be fun. However a bunch of the submitted tunes are for offline racing I think. Not sure how they will translate to online...but given they are FF cars it might not be too difficult.
