Haveing some trouble with the tarmac section. I seem to be doing well according to the splits, but then I end up like 8 seconds behind at the finish.

Are there hidden penalties for hitting walls?

No. Make sure your car has as much hp as it can get for the event. I smoked everything with my Lancer. I had about 2 minute gap on the last few.

Well, there is the penalty where you cant drive for 5 seconds if thats what you mean.

There's no 'hidden' penalties, any penalty is clearly shown on screen.

Look out for the Lancer Evolution Super Rally Car '03 in the used car lot, a bit of tuning and you'll win each stage by 10-15 seconds or even a lot more. I won dirt, ice and tarmac challenges by minutes rather than seconds using this car.

It's really strange -- I'm using a C4 WRC and dominated the dirt and snow ones. Now, however, I'm getting killed.

Dirt and Ice were considerably easier, I found myself overtaking two cars on most stages but I had an Impreza in front of me in the tarmac and still found myself overtaking it on most. Have you set up your rally car for road driving?

Raised the top speed slightly (270 km/h) and put soft tyres on. Nothing else.

Any suggestions?

Lower the ride height, stiffen the suspension (lower spring rate and higher dampers), increase downforce to max to increase cornering speed.

Turn down the downforce on your spoilers, dont be affraid to cut or slide trough the corners.

edit: ^^ to above; I noticed my subaru impreza being glued to the road when leaving the downforce at normal or up rates, couldn't get my tires to squeal at all. After turning them down I easily gained 8 seconds per run. Might be down to driving style though.

I use the hand brake occasionally, to get the back to slide.
I don't think traction is a problem, really.
Maybe I just need to drive better, but it's odd; I didn't have any problems with the previous ones.

Could be down to driving style, I prefer to take clean lines with as little sliding as possible so high downforce is always my priority. Plus I find it a lot more difficult to control sliding using a pad as opposed to a steering wheel.

I can only see cornering speed as your problem as the stages don't have a lot of high speed sections. You mentioned hitting walls in an earlier post, are you going into corners too fast and coming out slow?

I cannot remember the race I won to get this car, but I got a Tarmac Rally Car...not sure of the exact name (I'll update with b-spec bob gets done with his endurance run)...

I was having issues with the tarmac rally stages with my Evo, and stopped trying for a while...I came back with the tarmac rally car, and WHOA! I beat them by at least 10 seconds each stage..it was amazing..,.

It's all about the right car, I think...

I used the prize car - Citroën C4 WRC (that French guy's car), only able to overtake 1-2 cars in Tarmac. My tips are late breaking and controlled power-slides, watch out for up-downhill secssions.

As for Dirt and Snow, I found the AIs are too weak; especially in snow tracks, they drive very slowly that I can even overtake all of them in some tracks.

i lowered my ride height used racing tires and stiffened the spring rate also. I used the ford focus rally car and smoked them by 30 seconds on the tarmac. Dirt and snow were easiest for me. over 5 minutes i beat them by in the snow. 2 in the dirt. rally is the most fun i say in GT5 :D makes me want to go out to buy dirt for more of rally fun.

I was in the same position until a switched to Soft Racing tyres. They got 10 seconds + of your times, trust me.

You can't use soft racing tyres in the advanced rally challenges, it has tyre restrictions.

So yeah... Tried R1's, still had a hard time. Then I put on some R3's and did it in the first try. Wish I'd thought to try the softs earlier.
