I bought the game. Im probably going to return it.....

yeah that bad....

Haven't stopped crying yet. Im currently packing a pulse rifle and heading round to those Gearbox fellas, hear comes the real fear!:banghead::mad:

Ah, wimps...the lot of ye :sly:

I am quite enjoying this, but there again I do seem to like quite a few games that aren't instantly popular, yet do play well if you invest the time. Sure the xenomorphs act occasionally like bystanders close up and the acid-splash doesn't burn if you run past a fresh kill - but they do come in at you fast and from all angles. This makes for good atmosperic immersion, admittedly marred by a few visual glitches...but I can live with that.

And I do love the atmosphere; plenty of background sound association from Alien and Aliens in there, including music snippets. Trophies too are all direct quotes from the films.

The story is proving interesting so far, not quite what I expected. I also appreciate that folks are rarely impressed with game stories. I'm quite content to wait until the end though and see where that takes us. Some of the one-liner asides in the story are great: "The ship's all exploding and ****" plus plenty more.

Weapons customisation is nicely incorporated and the collectibles have a purpose, rather than being random stuff.

Anyway, for what it's worth, that's my take on the game so far after two hours. I've not ventured anywhere near online or co-op yet as we have a local internet problem.

As for reviewers...I've not looked at any because, well they mostly seem bent on getting their ego out there regardless. That's just my opinion though. I also don't expect people to take just my word for it, wait for a broader spectrum of reviews and comments.

EDIT: Talking of which, I like how impartial the Guardian review is.

lmao.

Personally I really like the game. The multiplayer is quite fun, especially with Ripley's Flamethrower! :trouble:

Yeah Zoology, some of the xeno movements can be quite hilarious, especially that bit where the storyline is all tense and drawn out...and then one waddles by like that :)

Did you try playing as a Xeno yet Crispy? That sounds like a lot of fun. I just hope the internet gets fixed for us today.

I think I might watch Aliens tonight actually.

I purchased the 4 movie DVD when it came out shortly after the 4th movie and prior to Prometheus. Then 4 or 5 months ago I found a blu-ray package with the first 4 movies and snaffled that up. As you mentioned the first 2 in the set are some of the best sci-fi ever.

I also agree with you on that Alien vs Predator crap, who ever gave them a license to make a movie had a serious cash-flow problem or perhaps a serious coke habit.

Hilarious! That actually looks like some dude in a rubber suit somehow in 1979 (think that was when Alien was released:dunce:) it didnt matter but in 2013!!??!! Come on guys did you honestly think you were going to get away with such toilet.
I'll no doubt still pick it up when it plumetts to £9.99 or something just cos im an Alien freak and that pulse rifle noise takes some beating.

Yeah, Alien and Aliens are two of my favourite films, so that Colonial Marines is as apparently poor as it is is a big disappointment. I wanted it to be a return to the early 00's Alien Versus Predator games, but I guess that's too much to hope for now.

Still, I'm going to keep an eye on it, maybe they'll be able to patch the more glaring errors. I've read that four studios worked on it so it's hardly surprising it's a mess!

i read that this game is terrible, shame really.

a real shame like how they messed up aliens vs predator movies, the movies could have been even better than alien and aliens and even better than the predator. if they had followed the comic more it would have been far better imo.

The comics of Alien vs predator is not really far from the first movie. The 2nd one is just plain trash but the story of the first alien vs predator is very close to some of the comic books series. It even feature a similar heroe.

How close is a desert planet from comics to frozen snowy cave on planet earth in movie? I would agree if it's a Female main character. But for both the story and the place when action take place. No wait, that was some sort of complex made by humans to make planet more friendly for them. So action for most of the time take place inside. Well anyway to much details is just wrong in first movie.

I liked second movie when Predator alone had to clean all the mess from first movie. I liked that idea and a movie it self :)

There isnt only one books you know, there's like 7 different series of Alien VS Predator.

It's not wrong with the way predator are hunting Aliens, the training ground could totally be true and would explain why predator are coming to earth in the first place.

Also in those comics most actions take place inside. Aliens are the best inside, beeing a cave, a complex or anything else.

Also predator beeing a sort of hunter it would be only logical that they pass a ritual to be officialy a hunter.

Can you point me out on why the first film is so wrong in the univers of Alien and predator because I just fail to see it.

Game looks pretty bad.

Perhaps one day an authentic recreation will be done. I've thought about an aliens game since my youth, used do a lot of drawings.

probably tech is still too far away. What I envision is probably too costly as well.

The scenes and dialogue seem really poor. I can only think in 10-20 years game tech might be of interest to top directors and we'll get a fine blend of better gameplay and delivery.

It's not wrong, that's just matter of taste that i like it second much more. Finally open ground, some forest action, city in the rain, PREDalien finally in movie. I had this weird thought that second movie is an apology for just assume crappy first one. So directory of second one send Predator to clean the mess from first movie. You have to admit that how firs movie end it was a mess. And the plot of second one is kind a relate to some who didn't like firs one.

Ancient pyramid inside glacier felt weird for me.

I've posted the very first comic book from Dark Horse comics telling story about two race clashing. I know there are many more after this one became gigantic success.

For all i know the best game is still Alien vs Predator (PC) from 1999. Sad that sega failed to deliver.

The dialogue in the game is pretty close in style to Aliens which felt just as gung-ho back then...

As a person who is actually playing this, let me say that having gone further with the game this morning, I took a break to let it sink in. I tried playing something else but couldn't get into that so ended up putting the A:CM disc back in. The game grabs you - well, for me it does.

EDIT: I just wonder how the Rebel Alliance contingent from Hoth got involved :sly:

I think I like being a Xeno better than a Marine. Nothing beats pouncing on someone from the ceiling! Wall climb, lunge, acid spit, tail whip, and the fact you can hiss really makes it a lot of fun!

Last night I had nightmares about a waddling necromorph.

He just keeps waddling.

(lol)

Waddling.

"They're lazily strolling out of the damn walls!"

You know, there's a Xenomorphs mod for Left 4 Dead 2, and an M41A mod... Valve just released an advanced scripting toolkit... So all we need now is a few maps and a decent script. I mean, can you think of any better game than L4D2 to mod into Aliens? Gearbox obviously agree because from what I've heard the co-op borrows heavily from it. Which is definitely not a bad thing, actually, that's why I'm interested to see if the game improves at all. Just some collision detection and slightly smarter AI would do.

"They mostly waddle around at night... Mostly."

Like it - that'd be the same as taunting for the Marines then :) I look forward to it.

I do feel like I should apologise to MeanElf and Crispy, I'm sure neither of you actually care but I'm honestly not coming here to be like 'hahaha, crap game is crap', the whole scenario surrounding it's release is genuinely fascinating me right now. Check this out:

Who Made Aliens? Here's What We (Sorta) Know - Rock Paper Shotgun

They're basically saying that their 'sources' (an alleged Gearbox employee and an un-named ex-TimeGate employee) are kind of pointing the finger every which way. It seems that Sega put pressure on Gearbox to get on with Colonial Marines right around when they wanted to be working on Borderlands 2 and Duke Nukem Forever. Gearbox managed to buy some time (you'll remember that delay from last year, probably?), most of that extra time was used to work on Borderlands 2 and then when they came back to A:CM it became clear they didn't have enough time to ship a finished game, hence they outsourced it to TimeGate, Demiurge, Nerve and Darkside. Sega applied further pressure, threatening legal action against Gearbox, and the work came back from the third party studios in a horrendous state so Gearbox basically rushed it and had no choice but to release a horrible, horrible game to avoid repercussions from Sega.

Randy Pitchford's original statement that development was split evenly between Gearbox and TimeGate was apparently untrue, because of Demiurge, Nerve and Darkside's involvement; where would they fit in if two studios split it 50:50? In any case, it's difficult to attribute the blame to any one party because as far as I can tell they all screwed up.

So really, it's all a bit of a mess. I've noticed they've already released a big update though so maybe Gearbox will continue to patch it up, but there's only so much they can do. Having said that GT5 came a long way from release to where it is now, so there is still some hope I suppose.

Edit: this also raises a couple of questions.

This is just upsetting, really.

No need to apologise - very honourable of you though :)

I appreciate that a mish-mash has occured in bringing this game out and hopefully this will get resolved to most peoples' satisfaction during the next two months or so. I suppose most couldn't help but feel let down after all the hype.

I know also that I might sound a bit like a broken record in defending the game over the past two days - but I am enjoying it and the atmosphere quite a lot. That's just me though and it's the way I am.

Despite all of those problems, the game is pretty together in my opinion and I hope you all get to see that for yourselves at some point because if you are an Aliens fan, the game is quite a ride.

I do think I'll pick it up eventually (even if only so I can be entitled to an opinion on it), but only when it's seriously cut in price. I mean under £5... At this rate, that might not be all that far away. I'm interested in the multiplayer more than the campaign, of course.

Whispers at the moment but rumours abound that the Wii U version is postponed indefinately.

As a Wii U owner I'm not bothered one bit.

Those having fun, I'm glad for you guys. Money is tight around my parts ATM. I've a huge backlog and March, April are showing up some big hitters for Wii U and 3DS. That's where my coin is headed.

Well, if there is any chance to majorly improve code and such, then the Wii U version will be the one getting a whole new version.

Having just read the article Neema posted, they are a tad guilty of overstating for dramatic effect. I mean:
If Aliens could cry, entire planets, ships, and conveniently placed ventilation systems would be dissolving under a torrential downpour of acid-laced tears right now...
is just about the most over-dramatic and rubbish first sentence I think I've ever had to read.

Then they go on to say things like : "Campaign didn’t make much sense..." and "...loathsome single-player campaign..." without any explanation or qualification whatsoever - that's just bad journalism.

The boiled down info from Reddit was interesting as the meat and potatoes of the article as indeed, the truth should be sought out in this. I think the amatuer dramatics of the rest wasn't worth the time I spent on it though. At least the vid posted had some points and examined their findings from various angles, even if they did let themselves get a bit carried away toward the end like excitable kiddies :sly:

I suppose I am posting this as an attempt to find a bit of balance on the subject really - anyway, thanks for your good wishes and I'll leave you all in peace :)

Oh, I wouldn't take much RPS posts too seriously, some of their writers occasionally go a bit too far in their attempts to be funny and end up just sounding ridiculous.

Also this isn't their review of the game, this is their review, which I think contextualises those two quotes adequately enough. Notice the opening paragraph to that review:

"Of course you remember Aliens, right? Who could forget Danny Glover kicking ass on the Discovery One, Sarah Hamilton shouting, “That’s how they git you. They’re under the goddamned ground!” Ah, the memories."

Yeaaaah...

Haha! No problem! :) I can understand honestly. Some people like some games, some people don't! Here's to hoping that some things will get patched up later on though!

Just rented this from Redbox tonight. I'll be playing after work but as bad as people are saying the game is, I'm quite certain I'll get my $2 worth.

Bah, and I even bought the season pass for all the DLC. Haven't been suckered so bad in a while lol.

Ah well, guess I'll just have to polish it :P

If I took a look at both scripts on paper, I could pull out some similarities but that's where it ends. After that its light years apart.
