Anyone watching the Dakar?

I have been seeing it, I saw sisnce 2003.
The Volkswagens have been doing very well, it's a pity that they are now 3, 4 and 5.
The motorbikes race is getting hot.
It's better that 1000 F1 championships together.

I saw some footage on OLN last night. Very exciting. Seems more competitive than last years event. Just wondering, am I the only one likes the truck class more than any other class?

Yeah, I'm watching it. Half hour round-up each night. It's amazing. It's really hard to pick out a favourite, since they're all equally nuts, and they all deserve to win. Frankly, anyone who makes it to the end has already achieved their quota of heroism for the year.

How fast can those trucks go through the sand? They are passing everyone!!!
I remember when dakar was doing a history of the truck class and in the early nineties, someone built a truck with twin engines, smoked everything including the cars and the bikes. Sadly it crashed very hard at high speed and the co driver was killed.

I think that's the reason. 100mph is plenty fast enough if you come off a bike off road.

Edit: There is a global TV guide to tell you what channel it is on here

Anyone know why? Safety?

Yep. A few guys got killed on (or rather, off) bikes in the last couple of years, so for this year the Dakar organisers decided to limit the bikes. Although for reasons of driveability, I don't think that the cars are hugely faster. It would surprise me if they were capable of more than 130mph on the rev limit in top.

They've just announced that Andy Caldecott has died. :(

As if we haven't had enough tragedy in the world of rallying in the last 12 months. This is a very sad day for Australian motorsport.

Just saw this. I can't say it made much of an impact on me - I'd never heard of him, and this is the Dakar, after all - but even so, I still feel sorry for his wife and daughter, and my best wishes go to them.

Yes, I was saddened by it. I always enjoyed listening to his interviews. The bike was destroyed though. And did you see Esteve Pujol (sp?)? He was knocked about quite badly, although superficially uninjured. I'm glad he withdrew, he was so dazed.

It amazes me that they're able to navigate over such distances. I know they get lost all the time, but really, one sand dune looks pretty much like another: so when they get to the top of one, how do they know where to go after that? And it's not as if they can just keep going straight. It's very impressive.

I love watching the trucks. They're so quick, but when they get into trouble (like when they get stuck in the dunes) it's amazing that the crew can get them going again. One of them rolled yesterday, and once their team-mates had pulled it back onto its wheels, off they went like nothing had happened!

I heard the sad news last night. My condolences to his family. :(

I've tried to follow this years Dakar at least somewhat.
