Are you okay with GT5 going 720p native instead of 1080p?

I would accept only 6 cars on a track if it meant having 1080p. anything less than 1080p is not high definition and is unworthy of a PS3 console.
Btw. are there any official references to GT5p being 1280x1080?

Resolution is all about Field of View scale and if GT5 is stretched to 1080p than there's no point in it, you could just play in 1280 x 1080 without the stretching. If you stretch a game too much it will look pixelated like GT4 in 1080i. On the other hand big resolution like 1920 x 1080 nonstretched will look unnatural on a small screen and you will feel like you're looking through a pipe in a way, the objects will look too far away like in a convex mirror. The larger the resolution the larger should be the screen, the sitting position towards the screen also matters.

For example I have a 22 inch PC monitor and its native resolution is 1680 x 1050, but I can't play videogames at that resolution because the screen is too small for me and FOV feels awkward, not like real life when I look at things. I lower the resolution to 1280 x 720 and it looks better, although not as sharp, but that's ok.

What do you mean with "smoother"?
Have you played WipEout HD?
I've played WipEout HD. What does it have to do with GT5P or Burnout Paradise for that matter?

Resolution alone does not make a game look great, hence why the cross-game comparisons are somewhat pointless. I've played pac-man in 1080p, and it looked no better than it did almost 30 years ago with its 224 × 288 vertical display...

By smoother I mean when looking at the cars in my garage in GT5P the shut lines (bonnet, doors & panel gaps) are jagged, I don't notice this so much when driving but maybe thats because I'm concentrating on driving. Similar lines in Burnout Paradise for example always seem to be straight & unbroken.

I've never played Wipeout HD

The fact is, all things being equal, GT5P looks better in 1080 than it does 720. Anything different is purely down to your own TV, configuration, and perception.

I've never tried outputting GT5P at 720 for comparison, I'll give it a shot later on. My Tv has been set up by an ex BBC engineer so I'm confident that the picture is as good as I'm going to get out of it. When I play games on the PS3 I always switch over to the Multimedia preset as this brightens everything up making it easier to see when playing games like Fallout 3 which are quite dark in certain areas.

hmm most people don't realize than vsync is off in gt5 prologue and gt5 demo showed around the globe. Game is still in development.

BTW i have gt5 prologue and screen earing is almost non existent...

i wonder about native resolution for gt5.

They can leave as it is in gt5 prologue 1280x1080 which is great imo or they could upgrade and get resolution like gt hd 1440 x 1080.

but i don't tink that they do all game in 1920x1080.

BTW for menus they could easly get 8xaa

@ Edit

I forgot one thing .

Hey how can you put 16 cars on track like london ? too short people...

I think that some of the issues (tearing & stuttering) described here have more to do with the individual TV than the game itself.

As one other responder noted, I too have never seen any screen tearing in Prologue and that is based on playing on 2 different HD LCD's.

I had a 2 year old 46" Samsung that ran at 60Hz with a refresh rate of 8Ms. The picture was absolutely beautiful on it for any signal source or game and no issues what so ever.

I just recently upgraded the living room to a new 52" Samsung running at 240Hz with a refresh rate of 2Ms. Thinking that the higher frequency and faster refresh rate would improve the fluidity of fast motion in gaming, I was quite surprised when I experienced some stuttering while playing DIRT2. I discovered that within the system menu, I had to change the default "standard" setting to "smooth" in order to turn on this smoothing feature. Everything runs perfectly now as it should.

I wouldn't mind 720P if it meant that there could be more cars on track or improved particle effects, but it doesn't really matter.

It's all about the gameplay. I think getting the screen ratio is important too; It'd reduce the need for AA. I had noticed tearing before in GT5:P in the Dealership.

Refresh rate is 240Hz and responce time is 4.16 ms (2 Ms would mean 2 millon seconds) Also panel can not refresh faster than inputed signal which is in your TV T(s) = 1/ (240Hz ) 4.166 10-3 s= 4.16 ms

I have also 240Hz TV, a Sony 46z5500 and it also looks super smooth with 240Hz mode :)

Yes, I would be ok with that. My 37" PANY does "only" 720p anyway. And yes, gameplay on first place!

Your math is right, but manufacturers are working to make the LCDs themselves refresh faster than the display rate. This means even less flicker during fast moving scenes. I haven't seen the 240hz TVs yet, but I intend to get an LED TV when a model I want with the features I want becomes affordable - less than $1400.

Not really. I mean, I do trust he will do the right thing which is keeping the 16 cars. However, if he announces that the maximum grid size is now 12 I'll be pissed.

Anyway car number reduction isn't the only choice to have if things need to be sped up to keep 1920x1080. The polygons could be reduced in far away cars or backgrounds. When it comes to weather effects the sky can be darkened and less detail imaged.

For me it"s much more important gameplay than visual!!!! If they reduces graphic on 720p but put weather , day\night changes and awesome damage with 16 or even more car I will be very very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think this is true. if it was 1280 wide and you played it on your Full HD screen, it would be awfully horizontally stretched, and circular objects would appear ellipsoid.

On the back of the box there is an info box that says HD 720p*1080i*1080p which means it supports those outputs. If you do not have a proper HDMI cable, the signal output will be restricted and your TV will read it as a 720p signal, or worse.

A 1080p image on a 720p cable or screen will still look good, but it will be downscaled, and yes, you might see that sharp jaggy edges are smoother, and that it looks better, but thats because its on a less than full HD screen.

You just have to get up close and look at the pixel detail on your screen...its sharp. No doubt its full HD 1920x1080.

It is true.
The game is rendered in 1280x1080 and the PS3 upscales the resolution to 1920x1080.
There are a lot of weird resolutions for games, i think Yakuza 3 is in 1024x1024.

No amount of polygons can achieve the same fidelity as would a higher resolution. You'll lose definition and inherent sharpness on any size screen especially the normal screen size people are using nowadays. If I were to be using a 19" to 24" screen, I'd be hard pressed especially after Prologue but could probably live with 720p. But with my 32" 1080p screen, I'd rather not. It would be different, had GT:HD and Prologue been produced at 720p but they weren't. Personally, the question is quite academic: PD and Kaz will keep the maximum 16 car grid and the current resolution (al least) and with what Sony's other developer, Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games has understood when it comes to utilising the SPUs in the Cell processor, it's pretty safe to assume that GT5 will further optimised the codes that made Prologue possible.

A simple pixel count (the higher the better)

1280 x 720= 921,600 pixles
1280 x 1080 (Prologue)= 1,382,400 pixels
1920 x 1080 (True HD)= 2,073,600 pixels

Hmmm, OK...well it had me fooled. Guess its hard to tell with computer graphics imagery, as opposed to film.

My HDTV is 720p or 1080i so either way I dont care.

I would need a definitive number of extra cars on track gained before I would make a decision to dropping the resolution or not.

I want the MOST cars possible, 720p then.. but I bet we will still have 16 cars in 1080p and weather.

720P is fine with me. As long as the game runs smooth and is all that it can be.

If they need to make it 720p to get certain other features in the game or to make the game run smoother then 720p is fine. Gameplay > Graphics/resolution

For me, I demand 1080p and at least 16 cars on the track. I've been waiting and waiting for this game and it had better deliver on all cylinders or the wait for be for nothing. 720p would be a cop out (imo) :yuck:

I really think you are looking into the car count of the demo's a little to much. Normally demo's don't have every feature as the whole game.

Edit: If the game is only in 720, I wuldn't mind much as PD will find a way to make it look like the best 720p has ever been able to produce.

. But it does clearly state that GT5P has a pixel count of 1920x1080.
No it does not. I says GT5:P running on PS3 outputs that resolution. PS3 upscales the real resolution to full hd. With 360 you can output every game in 1080p although real resolutions can be sub hd (like with halo 3).

Has 720 been mentioned anywhere by kaz? Where did this come from?

GT has always stretched itself in terms of graphics, over and above all other parts of the game, and I HIGHLY doubt they'd go back to 720 after hitting 1080 in prologue.
