One thing I've learned about video games is that certain things are included in games to exhibit certain technical and graphical capabilities. Because of this, I don't think there is a such thing as specifically choosing certain cars as Premium models while leaving most everything else standard. I tend to buy more Premium cars because Standards are treated so poorly. Also, I do enjoy the detail of Premium cars as well as the interior views.
I am looking at this whole Premium thing from a technical and graphical standpoint because that's the best way I see this whole Premium vs. Standard deal shaping out. So I'm really undecided looking at this from the perspective of specific cars as Premium vs. all cars being Premium.
Good points and right on the money, I agree with you as well.
I don't work with nor do I have a direct connection to PD so this is only speculation, but usually it boils down to 2 things hardware limitations and time. And if you know the first thing about business, time is money. Where I'm going with this is 2 points.
First is size. The PS3 seems to handle the renderings of the premium models at 1080p fairly well so the hardware limitations don't have to do with video first off, its actually a matter of size. As it is the game is a massive install not to mention the cache after the game has been played over a few months (not talking about temporary cache, talking about museum cards, paint, etc etc).
Each premium model and its textures, materials etc is probably sizable compared to the Standard model.
Not to mention the "mesh" (a wire frame model consisting of multiple polygons) is more in depth and that takes someone to sit there and either re model or increase the "poly" count of the model to make it look more clean and less "jagged in certain terms (not talking about Anti-alaising in these terms). Then take the interior view, most know this but the Standard cars are basically empty inside comparative.
Well with this increase in mesh and higher quality textures (where the stickers and logos are clearly readable opposed to the blurry or "blocky" logos on Standard), you're file size is substantially larger!
So in relation you have to worry about games actual size. Could you imagine GT5 on 2 Blue Ray discs? OMG
Second is the other point I touched on earlier of someone increasing the poly count or cleaning up the model. Not to mention the same person or a dedicated artist improving the texture quality. So if you figure all the man hours adding up, this calculates into alot of money spent on development, not to mention late to market where other games and developers are getting in with the consumer.
So hopefully this enlightens a few, but as you can see my post before this, I gave my 2 cents of what should be in the next Premium car selection
