So, I kinda tried the ARMA III Alpha today, thanks to the key nemma gave me. Thanks again, man, by the way.

First thing I noticed was that, while it runs smoothly at 1900x1080 with maxed out settings, the game adds some weird, purple glitched glow to all sorts of grass and trees. But, well, it's an alpha, of course  Looked pretty funny, though. More importantly: I'm entirely overwhelmed by the game's complexitiy  So much different from your usual "point your cross hair at stuff and make it die" shooter.

Which is a great thign! I've grown tired of these games, after all, so I'm going to try to get my Battlefield playing friends into Arma III. It'll take quite some time for me to even get an idea of what the hell I'm doing, but damn, seems like a much more rewarding experience. It might at least take more than good reflexes and hand-eye-coordination to be good at.

Don't mention it! Glad you're having fun, you might want to watch some tutorial videos because without the stuff I've learned from about 100 hours of Arma II I would be totally lost with the alpha. And that purple glow, I don't have any such problem and I haven't heard of it before! Try disabling post processing maybe? Or the ATOC thing (no idea what that is though). Shame you'll have to pay to get multiplayer but if you enjoy offline and stick with it I'd definitely recommend it, it's like a whole other game. It makes Battlefield look like Barbie's Big Day Out (I say that as someone who has about 300 hours in BF3 and only 100ish in Arma II, by the way, I'm not bashing it!).

I downloaded Arma 2 Arrowhead demo to see how it ran and it is playable. benchmark got me 27fps with most visual turned up and view around 2600. Only problem is how boring it felt. And the aiming felt bad. Still haven't passed the helicopter tutorial. There is no demo for Arma 3 yet So I can't test how it will run. But I'm going to keep playing Arma 2 AH demo.

Yeah, I started watching some tutorial videos on ARMA III, but it'll take some time to get used to it

Regarding that purple glow, I can disable that with the ATOC options (I think that that's it). Probably just a driver issue with my GPU. The game looks tremenduous, though. So much depth to get into.

I'm told 3 is much more intuitive then 2 was in terms of control. That said, you may find it boring if you found 2 boring but that depends why it was boring.

I'm finally going to take a dip into a bit of co-op later. Can't wait.

The thing is, if you're playing solo you're only really getting half the experience because the AI is so bad. A lot of people in the Arma community say that if you're playing offline you're doing it wrong (but they would say that, obviously), and although I enjoy playing offline solo missions (such as assassination challenges in the Armoury mode) I do kind of agree... There's something awesome about watching a proper large-scale co-op mission happen. My first time involved being ferried to an objective by someone, then he and I worked together to flank around the enemy while the main force arrived on the other side of the village. An APC turned up so he asked the A-10 that was doing strafing runs nearby to come and help out, we were hiding behind a wall right next to the road and this A-10 managed to hit and kill the APC that was not 10 metres away from us without killing us too, it was so awesome! The village was then completely cleared, we went back to our Little Bird to go home but we realised the APC must've driven past and seen it because it was just a charred shell. We asked the CH-47 that had picked up the main force if he could come back and get us, but he was full so he had to fly 6km back to base then come back to us, we in the meantime had to fend off any enemies (of which there were a few) then pop smoke when he came back so he could pick us up. As he was landing a few insurgents came out of nowhere so the door gunner was laying down covering fire while the pilot opened the rear ramp, we got on board and that was that. So much fun, you think BF3 is a large-scale battle but it's got nothing on Arma... The contrast between on and offline is huge though, offline with friendly AI is just painful.

So the AI is terrible, the controls are terrible (slightly better in Arma 3 though), the actual shooting itself feels weird initially but you do kind of get used to it (the extra sub-stances in Arma 3 help a lot) and the voice acting is just hilarious (again, much improved in Arma 3). Also the inventory screen makes no sense in Arma II but is much better in 3, as is the performance... For most people.

Cool story bro. No really that brings back memories of the Modern combat mod for Battlefield 1942. I did not pay online, just VS the AI. I thought I was looking at the inventory all wrong, It took me 2 minutes to figure out how to take a dead AI's weapon. I only played for about 2 hours. I was more shocked that it runs on my A8-4500m. I still can't get the aiming down.

Cool story bro.

That was the short version!

Yeah, Arma online is basically to Battlefield what Richard Burns Rally is to GT5's WRC license; much harder, more complex and more rewarding. I think, anyway. That is if you can get used to the controls, there are some improvements you can make like turning off head bobbing (which gave me motion sickness) and there was another one which removed the weird acceleration or lag or something to make it a lot more like a normal first person shooter. Also you know if you hold mouse 2 or press keypad + you can zoom in, right? I think that's all you can really do to improve it.

Is that crazy amount of head bobbing in ARMA 3? I got a headache after playing ARMA 2 for 2 hours because it feels like i'm giving a yes head-nod every time I run.

You know you can turn it down or off completely in the options? I haven't noticed it in 3, so I'm going to say no... But I haven't played in a few days so I'd have to check.

I have been following this game and have decided to make the switch from console FPS gaming to Arma III.

Any advice?

In a hardware sense? Get a decent processor intel have the upper hand at the moment i5 and i7 are great chips 3770k is awesome but expensive. and get a decent graphics card I would recommend a 7870 XT because I use that card and it plays nicely and is not extremely expensive, 8 gig of ram and you will be set for a couple of years if not more. If its a self build don't skimp on your PSU and if you can afford SSD to install windows on you will see a noticeable improvement in loading times. Arms is very god but there are performance issues for many people regardless of hardware, in some towns my frame rate dips so low (I have a amd 6 core pile driver processor) it's pretty unplayable, I'm really hoping for a well optimised game. But with such a system as above if your into battlefield frame rate will not be an issue.

Advice, good point. I need some.

Am I the only one who thinks that ARMA makes it a lot harder to hit stuff compared to your bread and butter shooters? I'm a bit frustrated after my first few attempts to actually hit anything - even at closer range.

This is one thing that's very poorly communicated in Arma, the stability of your weapon accounts for a lot. That basically means if you want to hit your targets you have to stop moving and let your weapon steady before you shoot. The best way, I find, is to sprint to cover (unless the enemy is unaware of your presence), wait for a while so you can catch your breath (being out of breath in the game badly affects your accuracy) and use the lean, half step and sub-stances to get a clear shot. If you're in the open the only thing you can realistically do is hit the deck, fire some rapid suppression shots then slow down and fire off one or two well-aimed shots.

In many respects it's actually easier to get kills at 200 metres than it is at 2 metres, mainly because you're likely to be able to take your time when your target is a long way off and you're unlikely to be moving, close up it's much more likely that it'll be a heated situation and much easier to make mistakes. Combined with Arma's weird-feeling first person mode which seems to be faster on the Y axis than it is on the X (as in, looking up and down is faster than looking side to side), you have quite an awkward shooting model for close combat.

These will probably be of some use, though: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA_II_Hints_and_Tips

At the end of the day, you have to remember this is a military simulation so a lot of what you read about it will be from people who take it extremely seriously, to the point where their clans are set up like real life military units. That's not to say you can't have fun if you don't take it super seriously (I don't!), though... But to get the most out of it I guess you'd kind of have to.

Maybe we should get some GTP multiplayer on the go sometime? Assuming everyone has either Arma II or the full alpha, anyway.

Thanks, neema!

I actually like the fact that the game is a lot more serious and, in that regard, realistic than most of the common shooters - it just takes a lot of getting used to, especially without some sort of tutorial  Anyways, thanks for the heads up - and the links! I've watched some of Dslyecxi's videos on movement - should've kept my eyes peeled for one about shooting  I'll definitely check it out.

If you are playing Arma 3 than its worse in Arma 2, I found Arma 2's aiming a bit bizarre. I am planning on getting Arma 3 once I get my pc completed.

Might be interesting reading for those of you who paid for the Alpha, I don't think the Lite version will let you play with some of this stuff. I'm going to get Chernarus (and Utes, Takistan and so on) in to Arma 3 ASAP, along with the Take On Helicopters choppers. I wonder if we'll be able to port the guns and vehicles from Arma II as well? That would be a nice and easy way to boost the content available.

I would be into that. I have Arma 2 but hardly played it at all.

Nice, maybe we could do an Armoury training session or something?

I finally got round to assigning my G27 pedals as rudder pedals for Arma 3's choppers, it'll take some getting used to but I've already managed to improve my accuracy and control with the KA-60. I also tried modding Chernarus and Takistan into the game, the former works fine (just don't try and spawn an A-10 in the editor, it loaded but crashed after a few seconds) but the latter doesn't. It's actually really easy to do. I was going to do the Take on Helicopters vehicles until I read that they have no sound, can't be bothered with that.

Edit: I have a Steam code for an alpha lite pass, any takers?

Here please!

Trying to get an alpha invite but haven't had the chance yet, and I'm still hesitant about performance on my computer so ... yeah, and I would like to try the new features in my computer.

I would love one, any chance I could get a invite?

Steam id : VIPERGTSR01

I really want to try Arma 3 but I haven't gotten all my PC parts yet >:(. Just the CPU and HDD.

I'm sure it wont run well on my A8 laptop but Arma 2 is playable.
