"Based purely on the raw architectural layout, RV770 ought to be around 50 per cent quicker than the best single-chip Radeon 3870 boards available today."...

"All in all, it's predicted RV770 will just breach the magical 1TFlop barrier for raw compute performance. It should also be easily a big enough bomb to flatten Nvidia's best single-chip graphics card, the GeForce 9800 GTX."...

Looks like I'll be getting one of these to replace my old GTS 320.

Good to see ATi sticking it to nVidia again at last. Lets just hope they get the power consumption right on these, though if their HD3xxx's are anything to go by the 4800 looks like a keeper. 👍

I wonder how this will compare to an actual top of the line nVidia 9 series card (or, for that matter, the 8800 Ultra/GTX), since it manhandles the crappy 9800 GTX.
I dunno if nVidia can attack back for the prices I heard this thing will go for, though.

Nice benchmarks, I agree Toronado, Although im an Nvidia fan the 9800GTX was a huge disappointment, its only a slightly overclocked 8800GTS. All I have to say is Nvidia better step there game up if they want to be on top when this comes out.

There are rumours of the 4850 theoretically being able to outperform the 9800GTX as well (no doubt for far less money), and if they ring true, nVidia may be repeating the FX fiasco all over again.

Apparently the 9-series is only supposed to have a short product life before nVidia bring out their new next-gen cards.

In other words: just a big cash cow.

Thats how they are performining anyway...

the 9 Series arnt a big step up over the 8's..

Yeah... shame since they could have released it as the 8900 and 8950 instead.

Good to see ATI have caught up though.

There are leaked rumours of the nVidia GTX 200 series coming out at roughly the same time as the HD4870, which is the end of June. 1 GB of memory, 512 MB interface. A completely different approach than ATI is taking (wider interface versus insane memory and core clocks), and one that may very well lead to a good battle.
Supposedly the GTX 200s will be twice as fast as the lackluster 9800GX2, but I would think 150% faster (if not less) would be more in line due to the pipeline specs (and make them roughly equivalent to the Radeons).

4870

I'd be happy w/ a 4850... whichever i can afford.

Jeeze, a progress from the 9800 already? (as if there was much anyway)
