To mr Zidane , try this with your automatic gearbox, it will shift too early continuously, making you lose a lot of speed..:

In a straight line manual is faster..
rev limit might be 7500rpm
Automatic shifts @ 7000rpm
I can shift anywhere. If max output is at 6500rpm I'll shift at 6500rpm, or just a lil bit later depends how fast power and torque falls down..
If max output is at 7400rpm, I can shift 400rpm's later than you, and having more power to myself..

You're just losing a lot of time with an auto tranny..
 
Definitely manual.

As you're talking about straight line.

Off the TCS, you can control your wheelspin in manual and make more faster if you hit the right 'rythm'.

Oh, since GT2, all i've been using is auto. Now, in half-way through GT5, i use manual. DS3. That's why i can compare between auto and manual.
and i've yet to tame my 800+bhp in manual with TC off. Straight line and cornering. :indiff:
 
Auto is for kids or lazy/bad drivers? Well, I ain't none of them, but I consider shifting when playing with controller a pain in the ass. If I had a wheel, I'd use manual.

There's really no question that you can ask that will make an automatic better than a manual in GT5, unless it's "which requires less effort" or something along those lines.

Lol, you said "Auto is for kids or lazy/bad drivers?" which I think technically, because of the punctation, was a question. You then sort of answered it by saying "...I consider shifting when playing with controller a pain in the ass", which kinda make it seem like you're answering "yes" to the question you asked. :sly:

Nope. You could however change the thread to "which do you prefer, auto or manual?". That question would actually have discussion value.

In the world of GT5, assuming the player can use a manual transmission properly, the manual is always better. It isn't an opinion question, it's a simple yes/no fact. You're just wrong. You are free to use the automatic, and if you have more fun with it, or if you're faster with it, whatever, it's fine. However, to say "automatic transmissions are faster than manual transmissions" is wrong.

You should change the title to "I like auto tranny better then manual" Then edit the first post; "It's more fun for me to play the game with auto and I don't care what anyone else says"

Then do everyone a big favor and lock the bad boy up 👍
 
I believe that manual is superior to automatic and I use manual in all races except FGT, F1 and X1. These cars are so fast that I am not capable of shifting, steering and breaking and doing it accurately enough to win. I use automatic in these automobiles. Perhaps as I become used to the speed at which things happen I can switch to manual.

I probably could manage the F1 Seasonals at this point but haven't tried.

Manual will still be faster. As I said earlier...
In GT5, if we compared two drivers of equal skill, driving equal cars, one driver using automatic and the other driver using manual... the manual driver will always be quicker. Those are facts. This has been explained to you hundreds of times, if you still can't accept that manual is quicker, then you clearly don't know how to use a manual gearbox, and that is your fault, not the manual gearboxes fault.

Why can't you accept simple facts?
 
Guys, it's kind of ironic. People were complaining about not enough tracks or too many old tracks and asking for more cars. All those factors is what's adding up. With a manual, you have to make sure that your timing and gear selection is correct for the track that your racing. So it takes a while to memorize what gear and when to shift for that course. You don't have to do that with Auto. You just have to tune the car so that it is stable under down shifts and make sure there isn't a whole lot of understeer on power delivery. I'm just some random guy, but I'm pretty quick in an Auto trans as well. You guys that usually drive manual won't be able to drive auto quickly, because the automatic transmission upsets the car. So you have to tune the car with an Auto trans, then switch to manual in order to conduct a proper test. Godzidane is right about the brakes. You can prevent the car from shifting by modulating the amount of brake pressure that you apply.


I have said all that to say that you guys are right. Godzidane the manual driver will be more consistant and be able to carry more corner speed. Manual shifting does not upset the car like auto does. It's tough to apply the same amount of brake pressure each time to keep the trans from shifting. I'm still a half a second slower in Manual, but that's because my timing is off and there is no way I going to memorize the proper gear and shift points for all those tracks and cars.


Godzidane, take your favorite tuned car, to your favorite track and set your hot Auto time, then change to manual. Pay attention to your corner speeds, I'm sure you'll see that you can be faster, but your inputs not being in sync is what's holding you back.

False you can get more speed with manual because you can redline it a little longer for more speed:idea:

Redlining does not have to be better. It all depends on torque vs power level, and at what rpm power is highest and the downfall after that..

That's a good point too. Although I like some real cars with automatic transmission. :D But Corvette with automatic transmission is just stupid.

Does anyone else giggle a little whenever anyone says "tranny"? It always make me think "what, like Rue Paul?"

The thing is with slushboxes in GT5 (and most driving games, for that matter) is that they don't make as much of a difference as they would in real life. They're not so much automatic gearboxes as letting the game shift for you. It's not like you can feel the torque converter interfering with the power delivery...

This isn't strictly true. At the wheels, yes. But engines mated to automatic gearboxes usually have a bit more power to overcome the losses incurred through an autobox. But yes autos are a bit boring to drive in real life.
 
I recently started using manual and quickly realised I'm way faster and didn't even perfect it yet. It just feels way better. Plus, your supposed to tell the car what to do, not have the car tell you what's happening.
 
Repeating the same answer everyone has said is redundant.

A tuned STi loses power about 1000rpm before redline. Shift before, gear in powerband, faster acceleration, faster lap.
