V8Supercars is now in guinea pig mode - yours truly is helping test. It looks as if tyre wear could play a huge part of the strategy.

8 setup parameters - 50% less feedback from prac / warmup
NO top 10 shootout for qualifying

We started about 30 minutes ago - qual anytime soon - race 1 will follow within an hour of that.

Probably shouldn't have wasted a set of soft tyres, but I thought i'd just pop myself ontop of the warmup list. :D

v8 guinea pig update

1st prac complete - all 31 drivers within 1.755 seconds, the top 10 within 0.409

Qualifying - top 20 within 1 second, not good for me in 26th :(

Warmup - top 20 within 0.8, top 6 with 0.08 so far

Race - TBA (in 1 hour)

wow! so any idea when it goes public?
As long as there are no problems when we run the race, it should be available in less than a day.

We've had an extra set of tyres added to the first race but those of us who joined early missed out. 10 cars are running around with an extra set of tyres so will be able to manage the race better. Oh well, that's what happens when testing.

somebody, how the hell did you get to be in the V8 testing?

Jules gave a one hour warning in the BATRacer forums that he was setting up the series. By luck I was browsing through there shortly after and waited for it to open. It took around 90 minutes to fill all 31 spots. He's taken it back out of the Public Games area until he's satisfied it works - going by the other series that were released, this is about 24 hours.

warmup update - top 20 within 0.5 seconds - 1 minute to race

jesus, this thing sounds closer than A1!

V8 guinea pig race

WOW - A safety car period with over half the field diving to the pits made for entertaining viewing. 8 drivers out of the race, 6 due to accident/collision. I salvaged 20th but I had the car setup to finish the race and take home some points. I might try pushing it a bit next race, when I have some more tyres to play with.

And for suspense we got a safety car on lap 73 of 78. It pulled in on lap 77 - YES we had a 1 lap sprint to the finish :) 5 cars got in to double digits for overtaking. Holden and Ford were spread fairly evenly throughout the field. Tyre wear was not such a big problem in the race, although my slider was set ~20.

Everything looks good, though at 47 days or so, it is a LONG season. Also, all but a few drivers had near perfect setups - something that produces close racing but is not to my liking.

Turns out i got the top time in practice on hards too. So i wasted a fresh set of slicks. :grumpy:

Man I got a good feeling about this race..... hope it turns out right.lol

Mr. Beyens wins.

I got 10th :(

Yes I did! lol
Time for my first race report.

Renault pull through at Imola

Today at the Grand Prix of Imola there was an air of change about the track as two time previous winner Lee Davidson did not have the best of showings by sticking his Honda 12th on the grid, while at the front, Haswell and Chang were on the front row in Ferrari and BMW respectively. Beyens and Horton followed them in Renault and Midland with Kawasie rounding off the top 5 for qualifying in the second of the strong BMW cars.

Right from the green lights Renault driver Hutchison was out to prove that Renault are still one of the top teams by muscling through to take 5th spot on the first lap and then claiming 4th on the next lap after Beyens had lost out to Horton in the Midland.

The drama started to unfold on lap 12 as Pianelli, making a charge through the field from 8th charged a little too hard into the sidepod of Chang's BMW as he tried to defend 3rd place taking the BMW out of the race. A shame for the German outfit considering their good form for qualifying. Pianelli regetted his mistake as he was forced to pit for damage putting him way back in 14th.

Lap 19 saw the first safety car of the race as Edwards, pushing the Super Aguri car way past it's limits parked the car into a tyre barrier, and it was at this point alot of the cars decided it was time to pit, including then race leader Hutchison. Lap 22 and the safety car pulls in with Renault driver Beyens leading, followed by Kawasie(BMW), Horton(Midland), Davidson(Honda) and Taylor(RBR) rounding out the top 5. Davidson was not to stay 4th as the next lap saw him exit early with rear wing trouble. A visably upset Davidson went straight to the Honda motorhome ignoring reporters on the way.

From lap 23 on it was steady racing with Hutchison driving a Renault that must've been possessed as he once again charged through the pack claiming 2nd place on lap 35 while Beyens pitted for adjustments and tyres, leaving Horton in the lead with the 2nd Renault driver catching him with each passing lap.
The second safety car of the race was on lap 41 as Richards in the 2nd of the RBR cars crashed out. This gave drivers the opportunity to pit once again and as they cycled through on lap 47, Horton in the strong Midland was leading with Beyens and Pianelli right behind him, but the lap after the Midland was not able to block the power of the Renault as Beyens reclaimed the lead. Racing was short as lap 50 saw the safety car again after Pianelli had front wing problems, taking the 2nd Honda out of Imola. Lap 51 and still under safety car conditions the Midland of Horton experienced fuel system problems and the car ground to a halt out on the track, Horton threw the steering wheel back in the car upset that his strong car was out of the race.

Lap 55 and the safety cars pulls in allowing the Renault of Beyens with clear air ahead to pull away from the pack, with Kawasie, Taylor, Trendell and surprisingly Adams in the other Super Aguri following. Hutchison determined to get some good points overtook the Aguri on lap 57 and laps 59 and 60 saw Taylor and Trendell switch places back and forth with the leading Renault always pulling away. All in all an eventful race with last years champion having a race he would sooner forget finishing down in 9th.

The final lap saw the top 10 as follows:
Beyens - Renault
Kawasie - BMW
Taylor - RBR
Trendell - Ferrari
Hutchison - Renault
Owens - McLaren
Soyfu - Midland
Adams - Super Aguri
Haswell - Ferrari
Allman - Toyota

Yuuji's Race Report - Water, water everywhere...

Even when it's not raining water seems to haunt this championship. This time it came in the form of the Aqua Minerale corner, which held lots of fun in store...

The grid itself was interesting enough, with Ferraris on both ends, Renault starting strong, and my teammate and I in the top 5. Strangely enough the start was actually pretty clean. Nevertheless I lost a position on the first lap.

On lap 5 I made a slight bobble at Aqua Minerale, but saved it without time loss at the price of a year of my life. Don't say this isn't stressful!

It worried me that I might have damaged the car, as over the next few laps I fell back to 8th. Meanwhile, my teammate was still a consistent second, until he collided with a Sato-wannabe with a Honda. Damage to both cars was severe, but they made it back to the pits while Chang was left once again shaking his head (and perhaps his fists). It's really a dissapointment, he's been running well...

My race, however, continued to be rather uneventful, although there was an interesting moment when on lap 16 the McLaren ahead of me seemed to have a problem and the Midland behind took a nature hike at the chicane. The next lap I thought I heard some funny clanking noises out of the Aguri gearbox behind me.

And then, my apparent curse on other cars came to an end and it was back to racing. On lap 19 an Aguri wrecked because it was bored and the safety car came out. Cars pitted ahead of me, including 2 McLarens - they won't be happy with that - and I was shuffled up to 2nd.

The safety car went away and so did the rear wing of a Honda driven by Darth Vader (this was clear by his shout of "NOOOOOOOOOO!"). Luckily things stayed green as he steered clear of traffic.

I held second place, barely ahead of a Midland, until lap 33 when I dived into the pits, the stop went smoothly and I rejoined 10th.

On lap 35 the leading Renault performed what I hear was a real quality drift on worn tires before diving into the pits. That puts a new meaning to Formula D.

And once again on 41 the Safety Car came out as a Red Bull grew wings and dived into the sandtrap at Variente Alta. More people pitted and I was once again in 5th. On a one-stopper, hopefully I would stay there.

The safety car went away and the water curse struck again as the 4th place Midland ahead of me nearly spun at Aqua Minerale. Luckily, he avoided hitting traffic also, but lost much time. Sure freaked everybody out though.

However the green period was to be short-lived as on lap 50 the 3rd place Honda had some mechanical thing go horribly wrong at Variente Bassa and parts of his car were left all the way down the front stretch. Once again the safety car came out and I moved up a position.

Seconds later the second-placed Midland ground to a halt, apparently sucked dry of fuel, moving me up to second. I thought that very odd, that three cars ahead of me suddenly went splat.

The safety car went away for hopefully the last time and it was a seven-lap sprint. It was very hairy as a Winged Red Bull hounded me all the way to the finish, but luckily we got there safely and myself in 2nd place. I'm pleased with my result.

A very interesting note was when the 8th placed Midland wrecked hard at Variente Alta on the last lap and flipped. Somehow, he managed to wedge himself under the front wing of the 7th-place Aguri and was dragged all the way to the finish. The Midland was ruled 7th by a hair.
