But they did in CoD4 single player, and that's realistic right? Oh wait...

 ya maybe I might decide to be a modern ninja so I don't show up on your Heartbeat sensor...

I dot recall Stingers locking onto tanks? The Javelin is supposed to and can only fire at helicopters if it is laser designated.

Correct, CoD Javelin shoots at anything I think

Heat seekers are air to air, javelin is an SAM and Ground to ground, and stinger is SAM, and RPG/ SMAW is free fire, TV and guided are ATG

Oh Ya maybe. I don't know, my point was CoD sucks haha. Well it's not the worst, but Battlefield last way better.

Oh yea, MW2 the Javelin locked into helicopters and crap. Such realism. Also did you know that a Javelin is made so that it cannot be fired at American vehicles yet in the mission in DC there is a bunch of Russians with Javelins firing at M1 Abrams. I think BF overlooked this to but then the Russians wouldn't be able to use the Javelin if this was implemented.

 I agree BubbleBelly

Ive got a mic too. :)

[Edit]: Im really sorry about this double post!

Maybe we could get into a squad and do a few matches of Squad rush yeh today?

OK, I give up, I have no clue where to start with MP. I've tried everything-sniping, offense, defense, but wherever I go I get owned. I have no idea what the good guns are, all I know is that when I pull the trigger I end up praying I'm staying on target because the muzzle climb is awful and I can't see anything because of the flash. Anybody have any tips? I want to know how to snipe especially, I could never do it in COD because the maps are too small, but BF3 has huge maps.

I'm BF3 the stingers/igla (sp?) are anti air only, no tanks. The javelin will lock onto any land vehicle, but with a spot from the SOFLAM will do more damage with a top down attack and will lock onto both air and land. You can't lock onto a helicopter or jet with a javelin unless somebody spotted it with a SOFLAM.

Awesome games with Mike tonight.

Was only coming on for an hour, but you know how it goes, 3 hours later......

Really enjoyed absolutely owning the mugs at Bazaar, and of course, Metro, where we pushed them all back to their spawn.
I was camping at B (CQ) to get any coming up the escalators, when I realised, that just wasn't going to happen, and I wouldn't see anybody if I didn't rush to the spawn and start spamming the fire button! Lolz.....

Great fun.

Thanx Mike.

You are awesome at reviving me when I go all Rambo......

:trouble:👍

"goes to check battlelog"

Nice one guys.👍
Great fun when you play together, makes a great game fantastic.

@VEXD.

You probably didn't notice but I joined you mid game a few days back.
Lasted about 3 mins before I was cut from the server and no matter what I tried I couldn't get back in your game :banghead:
It was at Metro, we where the Ru army and we were being slaughtered putting up a gallant fight near the cafe.
Oh well next time I see you on I'll try and join you again.

All I can say is to keep practicing mate.
At times I felt like giving it away at the start but I'm glad I didn't. My K/D ratio is still in the negative but I'm mostly in the positive for the games I play now, not that I care about my stats to be honest.
One thing you could try when you first join a game is don't join a squad. When you see which guys are doing well join their squad and tag along to pick up some tips.
You'll be amazed how much better you will play in a good squad.

Cheers Shaun

Take your time, find a rock and just take shots, or, run & gun with the M39 like I did for awhile, it takes time to get used to sniping, and utilize crosshairs below the main one (when long distance) and try hardcore, then once you get comfortable with sniping move back to core to teach yourself headshots with bullet drop, then when you get that move back to hardcore, try rush for learning to snipe, jus aim in the area of the m-coms if attacking

And fire in bursts if you can't see or attach the flash suppressor, I usually do submachine guns if I start having trouble, but ultimately, use what you can then gradually learn others

Be patient, be sneaky, flank, flank and flank some more! 👍

The biggest key is learning the maps. I felt the same way as you did when I started - going around, in random squads, with crappy starter weapons, getting owned at every turn. It's why my stats are still in the toilet .

My tips are, stick with one set of gun for each class and unlock some things for it - scope, foregrip (vital to reduce recoil) and heavy barrel will give you a better firing platform. As you do this, you'll get more confidence and learn how to aim/ fire (which is really tricky to avoid getting killed even whilst gunning someone due to headshots).

Next, learn the maps hard! You'll find out where the choke points are, where to avoid and where to hide.

Next, don't run and gun. As gunny said, tag along with squad mates! Ride coat tails with a group of allies and if you find yourself alone on the map, use cover and don't try be Rambo.

Ahhhhh.......... Don't try to be Rambo...... That's where I go wrong.... :sly:

Well Mr free-running-Bugatti, I agree with everything said here.
I'll add my thoughts too though.

The more I play these days, as I reach my own skill limit (I can only get so good; then I stick at a level just above sucky), the more I realise how hard it was when I started.

It's a strange way of doing things, but I suppose it is to weed out the men from the boys, but in Battlefield, you have to unlock your ability. Simple as that.
To begin with, the guns suck.
The add ons for the guns suck.
The tanx suck.
The helis suck. (apart from the AH1Z Viper)
The jets suck.

Why?
Because none of them kill anything, and yet, all the other people on the map, using the same things as you, they kill everyone, and especially you, all the time. Why?
Because they unlocked everything already, and made their lives easier.

If you can have the time and patience to invest in Battlefield, on the battlefield, it will reward you for that experience by giving you tools to do the jobs you like to try and do.

I couldn't have dreamt of getting up onto a warehouse roof, lying on my belly, and sniping people across the other side of Nosahahr when I started, because I didn't have the means to get up out of the way, so I got killed all day, trying to find places to hide and snipe from.
Then you get killed, re-spawn, are not sure where you are, look around for clues as to where you were last time, and get killed as you spend a few seconds/minutes working it all out, and you have to respawn and try to work it out all over again.

Couple that with the feeling that everyone hates you because you are a noob and you are not helping much, and that can lead to pressure, which can make you suck even more.

There is a bright side though. :D
Once you have invested that time on the battlefield, and got some experience, and unlocked those weapons, and got IR flares for helis and got some heavier artillery on tanx, and got heat seekers on jets, and worked out which gun is the best for you, and got over a 500ft headshot with a sniper, and helped your team dominate at Kharg, and placed all those Anti-Tank mines which can help you level up some more, and been relied on by the team to live out your ROLE, then it all starts to make more sense, and you get the tools you need for your job, and every time you unlock something, or level up, you feel a little more special in the warzone, a little more needed, a little more purposeful.

Like I said ages ago, it is rewarding if you stick at it, and why is that?
Well my guess is; so that those who want to casually drop in and play, will have a pants time, but those who are serious about putting some hours in, will reap the benefits and ultimately, do better, and get better schtuff.

This sorts the weed from the chaff. Nothing wrong with that. 👍

Sorry to go on.
Sniping: across distance is tricky, but ultimately fun, as you aren't getting shot at so often.
Do you like a gun that gives you SEMIAUTO, so you can fire again straight away if you miss?
Do you like a gun that kills if you hit above the ribs, but has to be un-scoped, and re-scoped before you can fire again?
Both are there, the guns with semiauto are easier to use initially IMO.
You miss once, you can fire again.

The best early gun, is the MOD MK11 or whatever it's called.
I got sniped by one last night :D
After a while, you unlock the SV98, which is awesome, but is shoot, reload, shoot, reload, shoot.
Much harder to take someone down, if your accuracy is off.
However, use it long enough, and unlock the straight pull bolt attachment, and make the gun quicker, easier and more user-friendly.....see?
When you are trying to hit someone over distance, watch for the little white dot that appears just after you fired: it's your bullet!
If you can't see what I'm on about, fire into the air, and look!
You can actually see it drop over the distance, and hit the floor by the feet of the black shape you are trying to hit miles away.
Use your scope lines/gauge and raise your barrel, then see where your little white bullet goes.
Always go for the upper body.
After some more time, you unlock the QBU-88, which for me just worked.
Until I tried to use it at any of the newer, unlocked maps, where it glitches, and I use it for waving to the enemy, when I feel like dying, or alternatively, I gurn, instead of aiming down sight. LOL.
They'll fix this issue with a patch soon, I hope.
I would also consider not using a secondary gun with a Tact-light on it.
You aren't holding it most of the time, and that means it's pointless, but also, when you run around, you look like a jet plane moving across the floor: flash, dark, flash, dark, flash, kill me, dark, flash, kill me, dark......
Recently, I unlocked the SKS.
Despite unlocking the L98, which is the sniper rifle I get killed by most often, I find the SKS is the gun for me at the moment.
Why?
I can fire 11 times without a reload.
I can fire 70 odd times before I need to find someone carrying ammo for me.
I have the right scope on it, as default, for me.
It has the same stopping power as the QBU, but it worx on all the maps.
Bonus. 👍

I know, when I unlock all the bits, like a grip, and suppressor, or Bipod, the gun will become even better, and so will my K/D.

Finally, before everyone goes to sleep in here, I will add this:
If you are sniping, SPOT.
This is your job after all.
You do not carry a medi kit, you can't revive.
You do not carry ammo, you cannot help people that way.
You do not carry anti tank schtuff, you can't disable a tank.
DON'T EVEN TAKE ONE ON.

What you can do, is survey the battle.
You can actively watch and direct it.
OH yes.
You spot.
You spot to hell.
You help the team know where the heli is to shoot down.
You point out that tank that's coming to take the objective by flanking, and someone stops him before he gets there.
You help the jet pilot find the jet that's tailing him through the air, by making it bright orange on his screen.
Most of all, you aid yourself, by making the little black dot running around miles away have a bright orange cheese wedge from the trivia section of trivial pursuit, stick to his head, so you can still fire at him and at least get a suppression bonus, even if you can't actually see him anymore.

I was at Wake Island yesterday.
I went to the bit of rox sticking out in the middle of the sea, and told everyone which objective to attack, by pressing the spot button (select on PS3) at each one, and they all ran around to where I said, and took out the tanx I had lit up orange, and the grunts running around in jeeps and buggies, who also got lit up orange, and then consequently owned by the team, and I got a 286m marxman bonus for headshotting one from miles away too.
They took the objectives, and we won the round.
That's how to Recon.

I would also say, if sniping is your bag, then play Rush.
Conquest is good for giving you the time to hang out and avoid confrontation, but Rush mode feeds you the bad guys to aim at, and they just keep coming! They start in one place, they come down/across/towards you from that one place, so you set up, get cover, and take aim and hit those Russians! or Americans! Hit em!
I have started on CQ, and it's still what I play, but Rush feeds you more XP in a shorter time I think.
Bear in mind, both game modes utilise different parts of the same map.
So somewhere you may know in Conquest, will start off looking very different in Rush, which is awesome, confusing, different, adds flavour, and is awesome.
Did I mention it's awesome?
Especially Damavand peak.
If you haven't, then select that as your map, and choose Rush as your game type, then go in, and see if you are attack or defense.
If you are attack, then enjoy the base jump!

Take your time, and good luck.

And guys, sorry for writing a book.
Just trying to help.......

A short novel by VEXD

Great write up! 👍 Read it all... You sum up how to play BF very well! Agree with it 100%... Also the bit about Rush is very true. The linear nature of the gameplay in Rush will give you more points over a shorter period of time. It is necessary that you know the traffic and choke points in order to be successful though. Conquest was my favorite game mode for a long time in previous BF titles. Now, however, I really prefer Rush over CQ. Once you know how the maps are setup in Rush mode and youre teamed up with 3 good squad mates, Rush is great FUN and you score copious amounts of points.. :p

Fantasic write up VEXD. 👍
Sums up perfectly the days when you start BF3. As you say put in the effort and you'll be rewarded.

Cheers Shaun.

Thanx guys......

Shame it's on the last page, as no-one in this thread ever reads what was written on the last page, just the current one

I dunno, it's just how I find the game.

Speaking of which, I think I've abstained long enough.......

:irked:👍

Thanks vexd, that was a great post, I feel the same about everything you wrote. I'm still a noob but feel that I've turned a corner with the spotting which you rightly pointed out the importance/fun of eapecially as recon class. I'm glad to see people championing it because it's ineffective and in fact selfish not to spot. If everyone spotted on your team everyone would get a lot more kills and have a much better time 👍

Recon is ONLY good for holding choke points.. There is no other vital part of recon I have found to be that important in BF3

Had some good games with VEXD earlier, went well until it crashed in between games and then had numerous connection issues, being put on different teams (the most annoying of many bugs in the game) and then came up against a team of jumpers. They really need to turn the jump button in to an action button only, so you can jump over obstacles and not through mid-air, whilst carrying lots of heavy equipment.

Oh and the MAV, they need to stop that being able to kill people.

Spent a bit of time sniping today. Improving more and more, though struggling at long range. One sniper up on the crane at Sharqi, I couldn't get him from 3-400m.

Mr free-running-Bugatti
Finally somebody understands what my name means! Parkour= Using strength and cunning to overcome obstacles, and it's a lot like my actual first name is spelled, and Veyron= The world's fastest production car...so I run you over in a 1000 HP beast.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips guys, especially you VEXD, great write-up, extremely valuable info, it's sigged. I just finished the campaign so I can focus on MP now. One more question: what's the best map to start sniping on?

Gunda, I missed you again today, sorry about that, I found your invite message about 30 mins after you left it, and you'd gone offline.

We'll have to catch up at the weekend now, as it's back to work tomorrow.....:grumpy:

THANX for all the warm replies people, I really, really appreciate that you've had a read, and most seem to be in agreement.

It makes it all worthwhile when you sit down and type a post like that, that someone comments, so to see so many thanx makes me feel good.

Parker, I'd say Gulf of Oman.

It's close enough, yet open terrain.

Lots of rooftops to hide on, and lots of map movement to pick people off from.

Failing that, I'd say Damavand Peak.
There are some conveyor belts just lined up for snipers to lie on and pick people off with.

These are both on CQ, by the way.

I am still a noob though, so maybe someone like Roush or Toyot could help you out a bit......

Suretbread, I was getting so annoyed with the French at Gulf during that round, as I just wanted to take A, but man were they camping, and spawning, and pwning, and spamming, and being extremely good, and also, jumping around a lot.

Shame everything went arse over afterwards....

I managed one decent game at Metro, before I went to get food and sit down and read all the nice comments people have made......
