Who do you believe engineers the best engines (WITH PISTONS) in the world?
General Motors
Ford
Dodge/Chrysler
Honda
Toyota
BMW
Mercedes

Remember, it's not only based on hp/litre.........consider everything!

My vote goes to Mercedes even though i would never buy one
I would buy a BMW even though the engine is not as good IMO

uh oh....
i didn't think it should be included not that it's not a great engine but it's only offered in one model (it suffers for efficiency and to get power out of a rotary it pretty much needs to be turbo.......i didn't want to get into the rotary.....sorry)

The "Renisis" is actually a pretty awsome rotary engine. 250hp from a 1.3 litre non-turbo two rotor engine.

You also left off Ferrari, but naming what isn't here will take up more webspace than talking about what we've got to choose from ...

So, picking from the options, I would say Honda. They are the most diverse, more reliable, more affordable, most bang for your buck. They make everything from lawn trimmers to Formula 1 race cars. The S2000 is powered by one of the most powerful inline 4 cylinder engines ever manufactured. Honda's don't give up, and they're really great at what they do.

that's great that they get that kind of horsepower/litre but these are not mass-produced engines and the manufacturers that i listed produce mass quantities ........as for Ferrari......if this poll was about the best engines in F1 i would be pretty stupid not to include them.......but for their regular cars, i wouldn't exactly call their engines bulletproof...........don't get me wrong though.......Ferrari makes some pretty sick engines and if i could have any car, no doubt it would be a Ferrari............i did however forget Porsche and i think i will add them if i can

Only 1 model?

It has been used for years.

all RX cars, Cosmo, 787b, REPU, and the people that put them in Miatas and other cars.

I vote for Wankle Rotory Engine....oh wait, I can't

And Mazda isn't the only manufacturer to use them. I believe BMW and Mercedes made a few cars with rotary engines 'back in the day'. And Chevy even worked on a Corvette with a rotary engine in it.

And airplanes and model airplanes and some model cars, and tractors, if I remember from Loud's thread with the big rotor. ;)

ok....i should of included MAZDA in the poll but i already put 7 manufacterers....if i would have put mazda...other people would have asked "Where's Nissan"........"Where's Porsche".........."Where's Kia!".....you can never win .........i didn't realize people are so diehard about the rotary engine......i mean if it's such a great design, then why doesn't Mazda put rotaries in all of their cars.......and why doesn't every other car manufacturer use rotaries

The only Mazda's with rotaries in Canada are the RX7's..........Protege's, MX6's, Millenia's, MPV's, Tributes, MX5 Miata's, MX3 Precidia's, MP3's, etc. are all combustion engines with pistons and cylinders as far as i know........so you probably need to consider Mazda's regular engines since this poll was not about rotary vs. combustion but was about who makes the best engines in the world.......i wasn't that clear but was referring to combustion engines since they make up the vast majority of engines in the world..............considering Mazda's regular engines, i wouldn't go as far to say they are the best........there's a very high chance that one of the options i gave are indeed the best engine manufacturers but some people have to be different from everybody else

To answer your second question first, Mazda owns the Wankel rotary engine and all rights to it. That's why no one else uses it.

Now for the first question ...

a) Because the rotary engine hasn't been accepted by the general public. Their sales would drop like a rock.

b) Because there aren't enough mechanics to support that wide spread use of the rotary engine. Mazda would have to re-train thousands of their own mechanics, plus so many others. As it is now, there are special 'rotary' mechanics that work on the RX-7s.

c) Because if everybody was doing it, it wouldn't so cool anymore, now would it? (:

You make it sound like you don't think rotary engines aren't combustion engines ... am I reading that correctly?

Any engine that you pour gasoline into is a combustion engine. The way they turn the drive shaft is what makes the difference. In this case, there are piston engines and rotary engines. One goes "up down up down up down ..." and the other goes "round and round and round and round ..." But they're both combustion engines.

Heh heh, well as the saying goes ... "Better to be rotary than pissed-on" (:

Nah man, it's not really the rotary VS piston thing. I would say it's more about choices being left out. But that's normal for just about any poll. The person hosting the poll just puts in what they care about, which there's nothing wrong with. Sometimes it helps to throw in an option for "everyone else", just so your poll doesn't get super dogged.

On Slashdot, their polls always have a "CowboyNeil" option. He's one of the editors that everyone likes to make fun of. The CowboyNeil option is always for "yea, we left stuff out, so what!". The current poll has almost 60% CowboyNeil votes.

yeah ...that's always fun but everybody picks the CowboyNeil option and doesn't take the poll seriously......i kind of hoped to God that one of my options would suit anyone who considers the question with some thought..........it's not about what cars you like better..........i love BMW's but my vote went to Mercedes..........and i didn't just put in what i cared about.......i don't care about GM, Ford, or Dodge but i put them in because i knew people would start whining if i didn't :)

I know that Mazda has and does produce other good engines. Take the Millenia S, with the Miller Cycle supercharger. It's good, but hard to service.
The Miata has a great engine, as does the protege.

But then we have problems. The V6 in the Tribute is crap. Several have had lifters break at 100 miles or less, and others have bigger problems than that, where the motor has to be replace. The '89-'9? MPV V6 sometimes has lifter noise, but it can be fixed with oil additives.

Regardless of what is good or bad about Mazda engines; you can't honestly say they produce the best engines in the world.....it would be a little biased coming from you since it is quite obvious that you love Mazdas...........you once said that your entire family owns Mazdas and there is a possibility that someone in the family owned one before you even knew anything about cars........and you said that your dad works for Mazda which could also mean small discounts on certain Mazdas.....that could explain why the entire family has one......it seems too coincidental that everyone in the family believes Mazdas are the best engines: You, your mom, your dad, sister, brother, grandpa Joe, your dog, whatever and it sounds to me like a case of DAD says Mazdas are the best cars, he works for them and can get deals, and everyone in the family should buy a Mazda

Hey now, I didn't say that Mazda has the best engines in the world, if you read my post, I said that they have some good engines, and others are bad. And I don't have a sister, I have 2 dogs, I don't have a grandpa Joe. And no, we can't get discounts on new cars, but we can to a cirtain extent get discounts on on parts, and of course service. All of the Mazdas that my family and relitives own were not bought new, and my dad doesn't say that everyone sould by one. Usually, someone is looking for a car, and someone trades one in where my dad works, so then since my dad is a Mazda Tech, he can fix anything that is wrong with it.

No one in my family owned a mazda before I was born. And it's not a case of dad says Mazdas are the best, it's a case of me seeing the problems first hand, and my dad doesn't work for Mazda, he works at a Mazda-Subaru dealership.

And if you read my post, you would see that I never said all Mazdas are good.

And if you say what are the best engines in the world, Ford makes the Tribute engine, so that already counts them out as the best in the world. GM has some bad engines too.

Not like I care about this corrupt thread anyway. This seems to happen to me alot. I post on a stupid thread, and someone starts giving me crap about something.

I really don't want to start calling people names, but if this continues, I will.

If you worked on BMWs, and could fix them up, and get discounts, wouldn't you want your family driving something that you can fix for free?

It's a thing called convience. You should rethink your post.

All that I wanted to know was who you think makes the best (piston) engines in the world.....it's a pretty simple question......if your choice is not included in the poll, then you could just say what it is.......the poll was not intended to make anyone upset:cheers:

Hmm...perhaps you chose Dodge/Chrysler ;)

Naw, I think I'll choose MB. In GT, I have always cosen MB before BMW, so I'll go with them, even thoughI ordered a X5 R/C car over a AMG ML55 R/C car. ;)

Can't wait to get it, 1:12 Scale with speeds up to 20mph, and only $85 including shipping. ;)

Well, there's one vote for Dodge and I had to give it. Besides the current V 10, they have built some indestructible engines in the past. The 2.2 K car special. You just couldn't kill them. The same goes for the 225ci slant 6. Of course the 426 HEMI. I do have great respect for Honda's engine programs, as well as the GM North Star. Who couldn't love the Ford power plants in the Cobras and the Chevrolet Can AM purpose built ZL1 427. IMO every manufacturer has its great engines, whether powerful or just reliable. :D

I voted for Honda.

It was either Honda or Toyota. I love the 2JZ-GTE that the Supra has, but I still chose Honda...

yeah ....good choice...i think that the X5 looks better than theML55 anyway..........i don't think you chose MB in the poll b/c there is only one vote and it belongs to me

Check it now, I got sidetracked for a while, then I voted just a minute ago.

I wanted the MB R/C, but I decided to get the BMW cause I wanted something different. It's on backorder, so I might not get it for a while.
