I'm not sure how much I can say about the car that hasn't already been said before. They are pretty cheap, quite fast, and offer the perfect balance between sport and civility. I can't think of too many brand-new vehicles that live up to its predecessor so well, added to that, a modern vehicle making it so easily into my "Top 10" model listing that doesn't have eight cylinders or can do 155+ MPH.

Plus, you can't beat plaid seats...

Yeah, the GTI is a good nomination... I'll go for the Renault Clio V6 though. It's one of the few (or the only) hot hatch to have an engine mid-mounted, and is brutal, which in my opinion, is what hot hatches should be like.

Again, my final vote goes to the Mondeo.

I'm going for very specific here, the finest version of the best hot hatch ever made.

The Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy, the final version of the previous generation Clio.

Now many 'newer' hot hatches may beat it in terms of power and 'on-paper' figures, many may look better (the Alfa 147 certainly does, but that will break down before you get to the end of the road) and the driving position may be too high.

However all of that pales into insignificance when it comes to driving it, faster in the real world than a Clio V6, faster and more involving on real world roads than its more powerful competition. Mainly down to a realisation that power is not everything, with one of the finest chassis on the market and in Trophy guise a set of remote reservoir Sachs racing dampers fitted, its ability to link driver, car and road is almost second to none. No wonder one finished 3rd in the Evo car of the year 2005, being beaten by the Ford GT (1st) and Ferrari F430 (2nd) is certainly no shame.

Now some may claim that the likes of the Golf are better all-round cars and more comfortable to drive day-to-day and have more toys, better A/C and Sat/Nav, but quite frankly who cares?

This is the best Hot Hatch we are talking about here, not the 'best-quite-sporting, but-ultimately-compromised-by-being-a-bit-too-soft-at-the-edges-small-car'; Hot Hatches were always meant to be the European working man's performance toy and involvement is the key here and the 182 Trophy gives you that in spades.

Not forgetting that with only 525 or so of this model made and a price tag of £15,500 it not only undercuts almost all rivals, but is better equipped where it matters (name me one other hot hatch with race spec dampers), more exclusive and at a bargain price.

No contest really.

^^ Yeah, I forgot about the Clio 182... evo go on about how good it is every single time they drive it. It is mad enough to entertain you, yet it's cheaper than most or rival equivilents, probably even more so now as the new one has come out.

That will get my vote over the V6.
 
I'll say the S3 should be in there. I do like the clio V6, though. It is about the only non-US car I have actually looked at.

Oh yeah, I voted for *suprise* the A4, continuing with the Audi trend.
 
I voted for the A4. I'll also nominate the Clio because Renault are the only ones who have the balls to make their hatch Mid-Engine, Rear-Drive.

I already can see the big grins on this one, but I'll explain why this car is such a mighty little hatch. Sporting a 1.2L turbo, it's not the largest for displacement by any means, but it definitely packs a wallop. Pushing 10lbs (City Turbo I - 1981-1983) to 12lbs (City Turbo II - 1984-1987), this car manufactured 100 to 110whp and 109 to 118ft/lbs of torque. That's not too bad for a car weighing in at 1550lbs. ;)

In stock uniform, it's 5speed gearbox could propel you to a 16.2 second quartermile, and easily make corners appear straight, since it's extremely well balanced. It may not have the grunt, or the styling to compete with today's hatches, but it definitely could hold it's own. It even came with some fancy features (besides the fact that it was Honda's first Turbo factory vehicle). A moon roof, lightweight magnesium rocker cover, electronically controlled boost pressure, and multi-point fuel injection, can easily be some of the most modern features in a car of it's age.

All in all, the car is a steadfast performer, and has some great creature comforts to boot. Oh, and let's not forget that it can maintain a 40+ mpg average. ;)

Sorry to say, but by most common definitions of the term, the BMW would not qualify, a Hot Hatch should be derived from a run of the mill family model. Its a 'hot' version of what is normally considered a boring model.

Personally I would argue that even the Clio V6 should not included on these very grounds (did you see that big can of worms get opened then), yes it may say Clio on it but all in shares in common with the everyday Clio's are three body panels, the interior and the very basic start of the chassis (which is both strengthened significantly and wider in track).

The rest of the car is totally different, had they stuck a different body shell and interior on the V6, most people would have been none the wiser.

I'mma nominate the Renault Megane F1 Trophy.

With the Megane 225, Renault had a lightning fast engine with a lifeless chassis.
Then, along came the Trophy version and all critics were hushed.
The spring rates were increased by a significant 25 percent at the front and an astonishing 77 percent at the rear. That, coupled with retuned dampers and a decrease in the size of the front anti-roll bar has been introduced to shift the handling balance away from understeer. Specially developed Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres and the new lighter alloys also contribute to an improved performance.

Renault has removed the standard car's Brake Assist system, while increasing the size of the brake master cylinder. The result was shorter pedal travel and a more consistent, progressive response.
 
There aren't really set barriers between hot and warm.

Anyway, hot hatches are more about handling than power. It's only in recent years that they've have dictator-like power.
 
Acura RSX Type-S, even though it is being discontinued, I am sure it will leave many fond memories.
 
Umm dodge omni GLH Turbo, or the Shelby GLH-S. Probably americas only hot hatch. The ford focus is about as american as something not very american realy.

Those are all Coupes. They don't fit the Hatchback requirement.

215 HP from a supercharged 2ZZ-GE and I think it looks good too...

No reviewers really liked it though :p

So maybe the Corolla T-sport instead, since all we got in the US was the Matrix XRS (oh joy :p )
