When you say "best" what do you mean?
Highest range?
Highest bandwidth?
Most features?

Personally, I'm running a Linksys WRT54GL with tomato and haven't had a drop since I installed it. I highly recommend it. 👍

Linksys, Netgear and Belkin pretty much rule the roost when it comes to the best routers. But some of the generic ones which come with ISP's are really good also (usually made by Huawei). TP-Link is also an excellent up and coming brand.

i just mean somthing thats better all around i guess and that tomato stuff looks interesting thx for the link

I use an ASUS RT-N12 wireless router with DD-WRT(original firmware looked like you payed a kid $5 to do the UI work) and I got it set so it does not drop my connection(don't even remember what I changed right now and this router is known for dropping connections at least once a week) anymore. I noticed that this router has problems putting data out in the 300mbps speed so I just let it scale down since 144.5mbps is fast enough. I also like the design since ASUS just seem to have nicer designs compared to some products at the same price.

The ASUS RT-N16 would be great for people who want a more advanced router with better features. You can hook a printer and a hard drive to act as a NAS if you have DD-WRT installed.

I also have had experience with TP-Link. I gotten a $25 router for my friend's birthday and he tells me he can get connection several houses down with full five bars. I would not buy one due to the way it looks(it just looks like every other router out there) but I can consider it for some friends or family in the future.

What's tomato?

I forgot what I use, but I think it's an N, but I am dropped probably averaging 5 times a day and I am getting tired of it

What's the difference between an N and a G?

I just want something to run 2 computers and a ps3 and not drop

Edit: it dropped me while i was editing this post! What a coincidince!

Belkin are not that bad.

The firmware may suck though(well it did when i had the N1 Vision Modem Router(it had poor QoS).

D-link are also very good.

A, B, G and N are wifi standards

B works on the 2.4Ghz Channels and has a max wifi speed of 11Mbps
G also works on the 2.4Ghz Channels and has a max wifi speed of 54Mps
N works ont the 5Ghz Channel scale and has less interfearance and a higher transsmission range, its highest wifi speed is 600Mbps, 300Mbps or 150Mbps(depending on the router)

Rule of thumb is to stay away from pretty much everything with an Ateros network card in it.

In my last appartment the cable was 90m long to the mainframe, and both my ASUS laptop and my D-Link did not properly work over this distance. Both work with Atheros, so stay away from those. Standards clearly say these should work properly up to a distance of 100m. Atheros is brilliance for wireless network, but it's ****e for ethernet network.

I purchased a Netgear router and it all works fine.

Ditto, except with the slightly perplexing DD-WRT instead. Never, ever had it misbehave in something like 3 years, even in my flat of 4 where it gets some pretty intensive usage.

As far as ADSL modems go, I've had a couple of Netgear DG834s and they've been pretty reasonable - my mum's one lasted 4 years or so before it started having a fit, and I've got one in my flat to handle the broadband connection alone. It does struggle a bit with that occasionally, but it's really the wireless bit of it that doesn't behave rather than the ethernet ports or modem.

ive never been dropped on a PC but im basically looking 4 something that will work better 4 online gaming on GT5 especially because i disconnect alot from rooms or cant even get in , im thinking of dropping Roadrunner/Time Warner as my provider and getting AT&T . yeah + my Edimax router is pretty old too so its time for it 2 go .
