The Coupe debate is quite interesting. I've had this debate with friends many times before. There are a few cars out there that are called coupes based on the exterior design or function, but do not exactly conform to the definition.
The cars currently mentioned in this thread that can or cannot be called coupes based on the definition are:
WRX 22B - It's a two-door sports car
350Z - It's a 2-seater 3 door sports car.. Yes, 3 door! It HAS a hatchback
RX8 - It has 4 doors
To me, the times have changed. There can not be a definition for the word "Coupe". You can no longer say "It's a two-door car with a trunk" or "It's a sedan with the rear doors "cut" out". It seems that these days a "Coupe" is defined by a cars exterior look or by a manufaturers claim.
For me, I'll stand by the old rule of thumb:
A Coupe is a car that has two-doors and a boot (or trunk depending on where you are) and does not have a hatchback (as a hatch is another door into the car) so when you open the tailgate (rear luggage space) the rear window does not raise.
So, of the cars I mentioned the only car I believe to be a coupe is the 22B.. but, at the same time, of the 3 it's the only one I think doesn't look like a coupe!.. lol
Anyways, back on topic.. FD3S RX-7 all the way.. easy!
EDIT: Just did a quick googling and it seems that a car can have a hatchback (therefore a 3rd door) and still be classified as a Coupe.. dubbed a Hatchback Coupe.. So, a coupe can no longer be defined as having only two doors, a la RX8. It's all based on look now, I guess. To me, the new IS250 "looks" like a coupe with 4 doors so in my books it is now dubbed a "four-door coupe"
