How about the track you will race on?

For the best results, this works every time.

Also consider any track you can run constant lap times on. You will also want it to be a short circuit so results show up faster.

Yes and No !

Basicly, you are right, the best is to test at the track you're racing on. But like Grand Canyon, Nordschleifde, Autumn Ring and other long twisty tracks, it will take some time to test several things, tires, lsd settings, downforce and so on...

In the time you test at the local race track, you may disadvantange yourself in time and things you wanna test. In a time shorter than 1 minute each lap, you can test so much more (1 night/evening before the race), every lap is 1 lap of experiencing the pro's and con's about your tweaks/tunes or car choises.

For me it's very crusial and helpfull to do shakedown-minutes n HighSpeed Ring. Which car can I chose for a championship and with which one I will go fastes in the first minute I drive that car? No tunes, no tweaks, I do 1lap with each car and the car that feels the best + set the best time, is my car to choose. Sometimes 1 car is very favorite by other drivers, then I'll be the underdog and choose another car.

2 years ago we've organised a STCC, with 4 RM car's in GT5. 3 cars where 4WD, 1 car model wasn't and it it became the most impopular car, the Silvia RM. but on straight lines it became an underdog hero. Thanks to a short 1 minute shakedown on HighSpeed and it was the fastest car on the high speed tracks + it had a nice 'standard' oversteer 'character'. Most of our drivers had chosen the Subaru RM, together with our host we drove both the Silvia. And sometimes, like on Fuji and GrandValley, we had advantage on the straights = Lot of overtaking :D
 
I've been using Redbull Ring lately as a test-ground.

-"Premium" track quality
-Short distance for faster testing
-Only have to worry about switching grip from 'low' to 'real'
-Few other variables, keeping things consistent

I like other tracks for other reasons, but as far as 'quick-tests' go, RBR is a good solution.

I enjoy tuning a variety of non-racing cars in the 450-550 PP range.

Accordingly, I find that the current Apricot 5 lap seasonal, as well as the Willow 8 lapper and Ascari 10-lap race in the Super events provide excellent venues for testing. All aspects of performance are thoroughly tested. And you are well paid, as you should be, for doing the development work. :bowdown:
 
Thanks for all your advice. It seems Grand Valley, Suzuka and Trial Mountain are your favourites, so these tracks will now become my testing grounds!

Tsukuba, it has tight corners to test your turn in, understeer and exit oversteer, it has the last corner to test a high speed corner/downforce and a lap only takes a minute, so you can make a change and know very fast if it had a positive effect on your laptime.

Suzuka East for me.

Nice short lap, high speed big trail brake in to turn 1, then a number of mid speed direction changes and a long constant radius turn to finish... just needs a high speed to big brake hairpin, and it would be perfect.
 
Silverstone has become my 'test track' in GT6, I didn't even intend on that being the case, I just found that I tend to gravitate towards that lately track when I buy a new car. It's great for working on all aspects of making a car fast with low speed, tight hairpin corners, low, medium and high speed long radius corners, hard braking zones which require good turn-in and various other tricky bits. And while it can be tough to string a good lap together around this circuit, it's also very forgiving at the same time. Then afterwards, I tend to take the car to Bathurst and if I'm comfortable driving it there then I'm comfortable driving it anywhere!
 
I think there's no such thing as "best test track" because each tracks have their own properties. If you want a fast car for a high speed track, do the tests in a high speed track. Same for mid speed and low speed tracks.
 
For me it's Ascari. Has the best mix by far IMO of all kinds of corners. Fast, slow, off camber, cambered, hairpins and sweepers, elevation changes etc. If a car is good there it's good anywhere that requires a car to be nimble and responsive. Obviously not a place for high speed runs.
 
Le Mans. You got everything you need there: long straights, chicanes, bumpy surface, high speed corners, slow corners, night racing, rain...
 
I use red bull ring short track, and silverstone stowe circuit for testing because they are very short but offer areas where you can get up to full speed.

I'm still really partial to the old Trial Mountain and SSR5 standbys; the latter somewhat less so since the track was redone for GT5. I feel Trial Mountain in particular does a good job replicating most surfaces and corner types (and road imperfections) with the main drawback being that there isn't a really long straight to stretch legs. SSR5 picks up where that let's off, also being a really good indicator of a car's stability under heavy braking with the turns on both ends of the straight.


Plus I have enough experience with both that I can be pretty positive that there won't be lap variance due to unfamiliarity with the fastest path.
 
In my opinion Nurb GP/F would be the best for Testing it has short bursts of accelerating, up hill, trail braking (S2) it tests high speed acceleration after Schumacher S and top speed by the back and front straight as they are long enough.

S1 is top speed, braking and mid speed cornering
S2 is a low speed cornering and low speed acceleration
S3 is high speed cornering and high speed acceleration
S4 is top speed, braking and low speed acelleration

Which tracks are best for testing cars? I need to have a proper full time testing track to help me choose what cars I use for online or career - I can then compare cars with similar PP stats!

Depends on what you want to test...

If you are playing online on some particular tracks only, then test on those tracks as well.

If you want to compare cars' laptimes vs PP (which car is fastest for given PP), then I'd suggest:

Fuji (high speed corners, low speed corners and long straight for acceleration)

Nurburgring GP course (low and mid speed corners and good test of suspension, as the track is bumpy in some places)

Silverstone (low, mid, high speed corners, easy track on driver mistakes)

Some tips for choosing track:

- Don't use tracks which are hard, as the lap time will be influenced by your (lack-of) skill and not car's performance
- Don't use very short and slow tracks (a.k.a Tsukuba)
- Don't use very long tracks (Spa, Nurburgring) because it's hard to get perfect consistency from the driver
- Don't use High speed only tracks (Monza, Indy oval) because corners are more important than straights
 
The Willow Springs Super event is the best test venue for normal cars, since it offers short races testing tire wear and fuel consumption. Only Ascari offers similar capabilities, but the races take twice the time as the Willow event.
 
I use Spa or RBR for testing and setting up high performance cars, but I use Cote D'azur for setting up less powerful, lighter ones for example the Lotus Else. The tunnel, tabac and the corner at the top of the hill test high speed handling and of course low speed is catered for by the rest of the circuit!
