Body modding, custom tuning and GT5...

I have a feeling that I need to repost something I wrote to put the whole "ricer" thing in perspective.

Okay, so I have a Supra MkIII. Awesome car, but the darn Z06s are laughing at me. So I want to be a little awesomer. So... how about an ECU chip upgrade, maybe all the way to Stage 2? For that matter, why not add a boost controller, upgraded intercooler and high performance air intake? I'm starting to feel the need for velocity!

And a few paychecks later, why not work on handling? How about some supersport suspension work? Along with that, some Brembo brakes? Now we're cooking with gas. Woops, that reminds me, how about working on that too? A high capacity fuel flow system and filter, upgraded ignition system with grounded high current sparkplug cables and coldfire plugs. Now I'm feeling it!

But now the tires are the weak point. Let's add some Z rated ultra high performance Kumhos all around. But let's not neglect the wheels. Add to that a set of lightweight 5Zigens to accentuate the surefooted launchability and uber cool factor of that awesome rubber.

Summer is here, and now I have some more funds to put in my sweet ride. This time, how about some serious drivetrain work, with a performance clutch and flywheel, shortshifter, and to finish the drivetrain, let's get that six speed tranny, a graphite driveshaft, and a 1.5 ratio differential.

With the onset of fall, and a nice vacation, I think it's time to bring that engine all the way up to its full potential. Give me a full rebuild with valve and cams replaced, port and polish, and a precision engine balancing. For that matter, performance will go through the roof if I lighten the load, so how about some weight reduction?

Now it's getting tasty! Why not advertize how hotshot this hot rod has become with a flashy tailwing? Woah, now we're ready for the track, and the Vettes had better check their six. Oh schnap, I'm gone! :D

But to really complete the package, the air has to flow around it like a samurai's katana slicing through individual air molecules. So install an aerodynamic bodykit. Give me some downforce in the front nose blade, sleek side panels, and a low drag rear section. And of course it has to match the rest of the car, but I'm feeling adventurous, so throw in a custom paint job I designed myself--

"Hold it right there, now you've gone right into ricer territory."

How so? *points to the above mess of work* At what point EXACTLY did this become a plate of rice?

"Uhh.... well..... that bodykit! And the paint!"

But, what about the other ninety five things I did to my car??

"Er, but that's cool."

So a tail wing is cool, but an aerodynamic nose that increases my performance isn't cool??

"Hrm......."

Hrm indeed. I'd like to point out that race cars have performance parts like mine. They have custom paint jobs, like mine. They have aerodynamic bodywork from nose to tailwing, like mine, right? Aren't we all clamoring for the return of race conversion?

I used to think that all body kits were teh suck, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I was being silly, especially when I pondered race conversion. And hells yeah, I want race conversion! I also want to personalize my race conversion with custom bodykit work and a paint job I design myself, complete with manufacturer's decals.

So before you cringe at the thought of painted rims and bodykits, give this another read. ;)

I like to say it with a grin. :D

But it is serious. We aren't asking for anything in the game that doesn't increase the performance of our cars, any more than we want flashy brakes that don't work as well as stock brakes but look cool in a replay. In Forza, everything you do to your car, the game shows you how it affects the performance in discreet areas like speed, accelleration and turning.

i know people are all like
blah blah pro racers dont drive around with viel side body kits and wings west spoilers

True but, were not pro's
and when we go online we will be unique with our cars, parts, paint and so on
and its not like im asking for spiolers that are 12 feet high and front bumbers that could cut meat just like lip kits and different spoilers

Pro's do drive around with bodykits on their cars, what do you think BTCC car's have? They are modified production cars, so are a lot of GT cars, some super GT cars are silhouettes so they arn't modified or kitted up road cars, they only look a bit like the road counterparts but the majority of racing car are actually modified road cars, that includes DAKAR, rally racing, most touring cars (DTM excluded) and most GT cars.

i knoww

but you get my point like its a unique thing and alot of people dont like driving sleepers. i personally think that sleepers are the way to go but a Greedy front lip and a Hks 4" exaust wont hurt on an Sir

But as the Import scene becomes larger by the second, there has been a lot more professional work gone into the scene these days and the term 'ricer' as it is commony used is becoming less common.

As for the term it's sadly been over-used for too long and no longer has it an original meaning.

Well i think window tints and neons n that r taking it a bit too far into a NFSU style game but having various bodykits from real bodykit manufacturers like VeilSide, Vertex, Bomex etc should be available for cars. Face it, GT is a game about track racing etc etc NOT illegal street racing and when u see most track tuned cars do have bodykits. Look at Top Secret's cars they're all track spec and they have bodykits, rear wings and its good cos it finishes off any track spec car like a cherry on top of a freshley iced cake :)

anyone can agree or disagree with my opinion but i say bodykits for GT5!!

ok this is just perfect finally someone with sense... its completely true we get so many tuners and yet nothing to do with them... but can we also let this be on ps2 lol... anyone who flamed this is just stupid and has no class

Well look at it this way:

GT4 Extras:

  • Tuner Cars
  • Tuner shops
  • Spoilers and...
  • Nitrous application
All these signs point to Polyphony focusing on modern, especially the current 'Mid-90's-now' Japanese Track and Street scene and will no doubt put even more of what is popular today to the consumers, tuners alike.
Which means more advanced Body Styling, Interior, Setup, Paint,
Vinyl/ Decal/ Sponsor, Engine enhancements.

So whether you like it or not, Polyphony are going to put advancements in these areas because that's the current scene these days and to them, it's what people want: modern realism.

For body Tuning, PD will have to buy a whole new loda licenses from Tuner Companies (apex etc) so they won't do it in GT5

Not really, Blitz, Trial and RE-Amemiya are more than enough to get them going.
Plus they could easily aquire more brands if they wanted too, it's simply a matter of who.

And they looked fine in GT1 and GT2, just not giving the body parts a brand name doesn' make them cheap and tacky, I'm saying name this bumper the Gran Turismo bumper ultra or anything like that, just have a selection of bumpers perhaps only given a number as a name for referrence, they can design them how they want then, make the look like proper racing kits without the need to pay for it just like GT1 and GT2's race mods.

PD made soooo much money off of GT4 and TT... They easly can afford it. Besides, they have Sony for back up. And Sony can pretty much afford anything..

I wouldn't be so sure, Sony are investing a hell of a lot as it is into the PS3, and they arn't in the most financially stable position right now.

Why would it be cheap and tacky? The "Forza Motorsports" offerings were fine.

Actualy, I avoided the Forza body parts at all costs, except the spoilers occasionaly and I took a rear bumper every once and a while. The front is just the stock bumper with a carbon splitter hanging off it. Given that there isn't too much difference, I usually took the nicest looking bodykit that wasn't FM.

i'm a big fan on making stock cars look like racers.....i love the idea of being able to do anything to a car in GT5.......

But why did you ignore them, because of the looks, or because it was a FM labelled bumper?

uhm im sorry if this sounds silly but i was thinking...how about engine conversions? Nothing unrealistic though like putting a nissan engine in a toyota, but like putting a B18c from an Integra Type R into a Civic? Or even a K20 from a DC5 Integra Type R into a EG Civic? these have all been done in real life, it would be nice to do that in GT5. I like the idea of body kits also, of course nothing flashy like in NFS underground, but tastefull mods like carbon fibre front lips, racing style bodykits such as c-west, bonnets, nice deep dish rims, rota slip streams, tastefull mods. I would like my car to like the touge racing videos from the best of motoring series. JDM style. No chrome 24 inch rims, hell no to neons, no pearlesent paints, no spinners, no fake overly to large bodykits that in real life would slow down the car, no sound systems and all that mumbo jumbo.
i would also like to see the actual roll cages in the car, be able to put to red recaros in the car and gauges.
What really got me off GT4 is that it wasnt fun anymore, i tuned the cars i would want to and they all looked basically the same, the only difference was the colour and the rims and maybe the rear spoiler, those were basically the only customization you could do with the car. I want the car to go fast, handle sweeeeet, and look the part!!

Yeagh engine conversions are cool, but what is stopping you putting a Nissan engine into a Toyota in real life? Not much. Probably wouldn't get licensing to do that in a game though, but PD could always offer a variety of thier own engines that closely mimic certain more popular real life ones for conversion.

yeh engine conversions could open up a whole new tuning concept, if your tired of your old engine not making enough hp then put in a new one! of course it would cost alot like it would do in real life, but only on hard conversions such as putting the k20 in a EG civic, but straight engine swaps like changing a CA18 turbo from a silvia to a newer version of a SR20 turbo from a nissan S15 would be cheaper. It would also be cool if it took time, like you wont be able to use the car for a certain amount of days depending on the conversion.

I like the idea of adding body-kits from sponsors like HKS, Amuse, Top Secret, etc...

Another thing that I miss in GT is turbo-lag, it is to low on almost every turbo car (except the Escudo in GT4 maybe?).

What if PD did a litle research on every single car\engine that is featured in the game, find out how strong the different engines are.. Let's say you buy yourself a Skyline GT-R (stong car, strong engine) and decide you want to have a top-speed car, OK, you buy a large turbo-kit with lots of boost. You would end up with a realy powerfull car wich is excelent for high-speed races, but the car would suffer from poor low-end tourqe, useless on smaller circuits.

My point is, you could build a 1500hp car if you want (if the engine is strong enough).

I think the Turbo lag in GT4 is very good, you have to remember that you won't notice the lag if your revs are always high, which is more often than not the case in races. A stage 4 turbo'd Suepra is pretty much useless on a tiny course, a Stage 2 or even 3 Supra is much more viable for say Autumn Ring Mini.

i think turbo lag really shows when your drifting, sometimes you would have to change the turbo setup to match what the car needs. Bigger isnt always better

I have never noticed reduced lap times by changing to a smaller turbine. And there is few cars that realy makes me feel that the turbo is KICKING in.. :boggled: It would be great to have the ability to tune a 200SX into, say, 750hp, making it rocket away when boost suddenly builds up..

Now and then I put my GT2 disc in my console just to hear the amazing turbo-sound on the R390 and the TOM's Chaser.. It's nothing like it, PD did a good job there :)

By the way.. Sorry for my english, I'm from Norway..
