I have a feeling that I need to repost something I wrote to put the whole "ricer" thing in perspective.
Okay, so I have a Supra MkIII. Awesome car, but the darn Z06s are laughing at me. So I want to be a little awesomer. So... how about an ECU chip upgrade, maybe all the way to Stage 2? For that matter, why not add a boost controller, upgraded intercooler and high performance air intake? I'm starting to feel the need for velocity!
And a few paychecks later, why not work on handling? How about some supersport suspension work? Along with that, some Brembo brakes? Now we're cooking with gas. Woops, that reminds me, how about working on that too? A high capacity fuel flow system and filter, upgraded ignition system with grounded high current sparkplug cables and coldfire plugs. Now I'm feeling it!
But now the tires are the weak point. Let's add some Z rated ultra high performance Kumhos all around. But let's not neglect the wheels. Add to that a set of lightweight 5Zigens to accentuate the surefooted launchability and uber cool factor of that awesome rubber.
Summer is here, and now I have some more funds to put in my sweet ride. This time, how about some serious drivetrain work, with a performance clutch and flywheel, shortshifter, and to finish the drivetrain, let's get that six speed tranny, a graphite driveshaft, and a 1.5 ratio differential.
With the onset of fall, and a nice vacation, I think it's time to bring that engine all the way up to its full potential. Give me a full rebuild with valve and cams replaced, port and polish, and a precision engine balancing. For that matter, performance will go through the roof if I lighten the load, so how about some weight reduction?
Now it's getting tasty! Why not advertize how hotshot this hot rod has become with a flashy tailwing? Woah, now we're ready for the track, and the Vettes had better check their six. Oh schnap, I'm gone!
But to really complete the package, the air has to flow around it like a samurai's katana slicing through individual air molecules. So install an aerodynamic bodykit. Give me some downforce in the front nose blade, sleek side panels, and a low drag rear section. And of course it has to match the rest of the car, but I'm feeling adventurous, so throw in a custom paint job I designed myself--
"Hold it right there, now you've gone right into ricer territory."
How so? *points to the above mess of work* At what point EXACTLY did this become a plate of rice?
"Uhh.... well..... that bodykit! And the paint!"
But, what about the other ninety five things I did to my car??
"Er, but that's cool."
So a tail wing is cool, but an aerodynamic nose that increases my performance isn't cool??
"Hrm......."
Hrm indeed. I'd like to point out that race cars have performance parts like mine. They have custom paint jobs, like mine. They have aerodynamic bodywork from nose to tailwing, like mine, right? Aren't we all clamoring for the return of race conversion?
I used to think that all body kits were teh suck, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I was being silly, especially when I pondered race conversion. And hells yeah, I want race conversion! I also want to personalize my race conversion with custom bodykit work and a paint job I design myself, complete with manufacturer's decals.
So before you cringe at the thought of painted rims and bodykits, give this another read.
