Repeating the same event over and over to gain money and xp
Ah, i see. i do that. didn't know i was grinding though. i thought it was referring to some sort of cheat.

Thanks Mr X:tup:

If you want to grind, grind on the seasonal a-spec event 4...it gives 500000 credits and 100000 xp for a race that takes under 6 1/2 mins (if you win)

Same...200% bonus!! I always keep that going...even if I don't feel like playing on that day, I still log on for my bonus

The term "Grind" means repeatedly doing the same event to earn more money for something, and I too do it often after finding one which is practical to spare my leisure.

It comes from old (usually Japanese) RPG games where you would have to run around and fight monsters over and over again just to be able to level up high enough to fight the next boss.

In GT5 it's basically the same, having to repeat the same events over and over again to be able to level up and unlock more races, or just to get more money.

I remember when grinding almost made me quit the game, from nov 30th 2010 (started playing on the 24th, aka launch day, not knowing how long it took to get a million credits...) to... I cannot remember when (aka the day grinding died in GT5), but I do remember that it took forever to get 1 000 000 credits, now a single race gives you a million in 20 minutes.

So grinding doesn't really exist anymore, unless you do the same race for over 8 hours with the current bonuses and all.

I also remember that it took me DAYS, if not weeks to get the FGT in early 2011, now it takes an hour .

I didn't know that the term actually derives from a way of playing a Japanese RPG game though I did know it meant hanging around somewhere the same spot to make yourself ready for next process or just for recreation or refreshment.

"Grind," as used on these forums, is actually shortened from "grind out." Grinding out implies working to the desired result by using a routine. This generally means the aforementioned repeating of the same event(s) for credits and experience but it has also been used when discussing reward tickets and the process of backing up the save file and reopening the ticket until the desired car is obtained.

Grind- what one must do for grip.
Grip- stuff that you pay to get your swerve on.

Grind isn't a video game term. It applies to ANY repetitive, tiring work which is where the term "the daily grind" comes from when talking about your job.

Exactly^^. I can't believe someone thinks the phrase originates from playing a game! The term has been used for as long as a repetetive form of work has existed.

The phrase that grates on me though (he opens himself up for the obvious next reply!) is 'this'. When someone agrees with the person aboves post and simply puts 'this', it strikes me as being totaly lazy. I don't care if you agree with it but if you must tell us that you do agree with it, tell us why and maybe say I agree instead of 'this'!

Ahem.

When I said it comes from RPGs I obviously meant the term being used in gaming.

Yes, but I think the first post was about the origin of the word itself, not when and in what context the gaming community stole it for the first time.

what is the exact name for that race and which map is it with which limit of pp?

In Canada "grinding" often costs $20 and lasts about 3 minutes..:sly:

Repeating the same event over and over to gain money and xp

I've scrolled through a handful of replies and each has offered some sort of answer, but I felt that they required further elaboration.

Repeating events over and over to gain money and experience may not be viewed as a "grind" if the player doesn't feel it to be a chore. I think "grind" is more fitting when we're talking about something a player isn't really enjoying but does anyway for the sake of the rewards for doing so.

I'll point to the online game Maple Story as an example. In this game players spend literally thousands of hours grinding 99.9999999% of the time for the sake of slowly building up their characters. Sure, earlier levels come somewhat quickly, but after a few dozen levels you're spending heaps of hours just to gain a single level, and you spend that entire time repeatedly killing the same enemies over and over and over and over and over again, and not enjoying any of that time spent with the game. It's all for the hope that maybe someday they'll eventually have a godly character, even though the entire path getting there is thousands of hours of tedium and absolutely no joy whatsoever.

If you're in a situation of "Well, I want to go do this, which I expect I would enjoy, but first I have to spend a bunch of time doing this tedious chore," that's a grind.
