The big question now is that even if the Volt would adapt easily to daily use, with fuel back to being "cheap," will the idea sell? I still hope so, even at $40K.

Good News For Us Living in Michigan!

The big news today is that the Volt's battery will be produced in Michigan. This is very exciting and promising news, given that GM will be building all of them in-house, requiring a new facility and a whole new line of workers... Which means jobs for people who desperately need them.

* Next phase of getting the Volt ready for market will include communities such as Washington, D.C., San Francisco and other early-adopter markets
* GM and a broad group of utilities working together to establish infrastructure and accelerate the commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles

WASHINGTON - General Motors today outlined a comprehensive plan of action to help communities get ready for plug-in electric vehicles such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt. GM announced details of the plan at the Washington Auto Show.

"Collaborating with communities such as San Francisco and metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C. - where there's already an interest in plug-in vehicles - is another important step toward raising customer awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of vehicles such as the Volt," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.

General Motors is working with key stakeholders in cities such as San Francisco to develop policies and enablers to accelerate the transition to plug-in electric vehicles. GM will undertake similar efforts around the country in communities such as Washington, D.C. These actions will help ensure the early success of the Chevrolet Volt - which hits the market next year - and other plug-in vehicles. Stakeholders that are key to establishing plug-in-ready metropolitan areas and regions include:

* State, city and county governments
* Electric utilities
* Regulators/public utility commissions
* Permitting and code officials
* Clean Cities coalitions
* Local employers
* Universities
* Early electric vehicle adopters

"Cities have an indispensable role in making plug-in vehicles successful," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. "Here in San Francisco, we are acting now to make sure the charging infrastructure will be available to support these vehicles as soon as they are ready for sale, and we are working with other cities in the region to make the Bay Area a thriving market for electric transportation."

Challenges that need to be addressed include consumer incentives to make this early technology more affordable; public and workplace charging infrastructure; consumer-friendly electricity rates and renewable electricity options; government and corporate vehicle purchases; supportive permitting and codes for vehicle charging; and other incentives such as high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lane access.

GM is making great strides toward bringing the Volt from concept to the showroom. More than 30 prototype vehicles powered by lithium-ion battery packs are undergoing rigorous testing at GM's Proving Ground in Milford, Mich. In addition, last month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, GM announced it will manufacture the Volt battery packs in the United States.

"The Chevy Volt is truly coming to life, but preparing the market for electric vehicles also requires capable partners from outside the auto industry," said Peper. "Momentum is building as governments, technology companies, communities and universities are increasingly working together to prepare the market for electric vehicles."

Several recent positive developments in this regard include:

* Last October, the federal government approved a $7,500 tax incentive for consumers of plug-in electric vehicles such as the Chevy Volt.
* In November, the California cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland announced a plan for plug-in vehicle infrastructure, incentives and enablers.
* A new Michigan law expedites the development of advanced battery manufacturing and research capabilities in the state.

GM is also helping to pave the way to plug-in commercialization on several other fronts, including:

* Working with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and a coalition of more than 40 utilities to solve challenges and accelerate the commercialization of plug-in electric vehicles.
* Playing a lead role in helping to create Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards for the vehicle charging interface.

"We know plenty of work still remains, both within and outside of GM," said Peper. "But today's and other recent announcements underscore the comprehensive work being done to bring the Chevrolet Volt and other electrically driven vehicles to market - and they also highlight why we are so optimistic about the ultimate success of the Volt."

It seemed relatively likely that San Francisco (and the Bay Area in general) would be one of the first cities ready for the Volt, but the selection of Washington was interesting as well. It looks like a fair bit of work needs to be done for everything to be "Volt Ready," and it may be a while before smaller cities receive the title. My guess is that Ann Arbor will beat Detroit here in Michigan, possibly even my home town before the Motor City as well.

BTW:

Seeing the Volt out in real-world locations makes it look much better, and overall, makes it look like a "normal" car.

My Grandma and my Mom were all abuzz talking about the car the other day, which means (at least in my eyes) that they shouldn't have too much of a problem selling the idea to "average" people.

You bet they won't have a problem selling the idea! My dad, who in no way is interested in cars, is eyeing the Opel Ampera.

The problem is selling the car itself. But then again the basic rule is, if the car is cheaper to run people will be interested in it. It appeals to their wallets, and therefore their needs. If the Volt/Ampera will lives up to it's extremely low consumption, people will be equally interested in it. And in interested I mean they will seriously consider it and compare it to other cars, not "I'd like that".
 
Woot! Go Bay Area, hopefully I will see one of these right away.

So far, they're naming San Francisco (and the Bay Area) and Washington D.C. as "Volt Ready" cities. GM will be working with other municipalities to make sure that they will be ready for the car as well.

Their version looks better than ours, thats for sure. Well, I suppose that depends on what you're looking for. I like how the Volt looks like a "normal" car on the outside, but this definitely looks a bit more special.... In a good way! No word on a release date, though. I'm going to bet we get our Volt here in the US on time, late 2010, the British/Germans get theirs by mid 2011, and then the Aussies with theirs by late 2011 as a 2012 model.
 
I think our version looks better. Theirs looks fat and heavy like almost all European cars. Eww. But their wheels are nicer and look more aerodynamic, which I've always been surprised to see wasn't 1st on the list of things for the Volt to be.
 
I would go for the Opel Ampera. Looks like a much more modern car.
I still can't believe we have to wait another 3 years for this. The Volt is already looking slightly outdated :lol:.
 
That Holden looks like nothing more than a photoshop of this image.

And between the Chevy and Opel, I like the front of the Opel better, but it just doesn't really seem to fit the styling of the whole car as well as the Volt. And I will be upset if GM doesn't touch the rear of the Opel.
 
Normally Holden gets what Europe gets, strange that we're actually starting to get US stuff, including the Cruze.
 
The Opel looks way too much like a bloated TSX.

Monochromatic sideskirts should help the Volt look a little better.
 
That thing had better be super-ultra-mega aerodynamic to make up for how ugly it is.

You may as well have just said, "I like both versions better."

The Chevy and Holden model are the same.
 
The Opel's rear end looks way better than the Chevy's IMO.

I'll do my best to answer these...

  • What is it's cylinder capacity?

The Volt will be using a 1.4L naturally aspirated I4 that will be assembled here in Michigan (originally intended for Flint, but I believe that was changed), producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 BHP. There was speculation that a turbocharged version would make its way into the car, but that engine has been reserved for the Chevrolet Cruze and other new GM vehicles. Previously, GM had plans to use diesel or biofuel options in the Volt as well (likely in the European and Australian spin-offs), which I believe have continued.

  • How big is the fuel tank?

I don't believe GM has ever specified how big or small the tank is, but I would imagine that it is somewhere between 5-10 (US) gallons, as it would not need to be full-size (12-18 US gallons) to use the car on most days.

  • Consumption of this engine for creating electricity?

Likely not much, but I believe their early estimations were that it would get somewhere near 150 MPG. How exactly that number was calculated, with the electric figures included, I do not know. My guess is that it has fallen off a bit, but still impressive numbers.



As far as we can tell, the prototype cars have been meeting or exceeding the promised 40 all-electric mileage claims, which sounds good thus far. Given that most people don't drive more than 40 miles in a day, this could come in handy for millions of potential new buyers. After that 40-ish mile distance is up, the gasoline (or diesel, biofuel, etc) engine kicks on, and will continue to power the electric motor, while also charging the electric battery. GM has not said specifically how that system would work, other than that the car will always be moving under electric power - never by the fueled engine. Regenerative braking will help to charge the batteries as well, but that will not be enough to keep a positive charge all the time. My guess is that the fueled engine will continue to run until the batteries are charged, unless the driver turns the car off - but I may be mistaken.

What Did "230" Mean? Now We Know! And Knowing is Half the Battle!

The biggest bombshell is Henderson's announcement that the "230" marketing campaign floating around for the past week is related to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The EPA has released a new methodology for determining a draft fuel economy standard for extended-range EVs like the Volt, and under this new procedure, the Volt will have a composite urban fuel economy rating of 230 mpg! On the electric side, the Volt will consume 25 kW/hours per 100 miles. That makes the Volt the first car ever to get a triple digit fuel economy rating.

According to Frank Weber, vehicle chief engineer for the Volt, the number is based on combined electric only driving and charge sustaining mode with the engine running. He declined to get specific about the proportions, but did say that the urban cycle would be predominantly EV only. The EPA has been studying real world vehicle usage and is developing the formulas to try and provide a representative number of what most customers could expect to achieve. In addition to the composite number, the new EPA stickers will likely also get numbers for mileage in charge sustaining mode and electric efficiency in EV mode.
