Chrome, Flash or YouTube problem

Hi guys,

I've got an odd problem that I've only just noticed and thought I'd turn to you guys first as you always seem to know what's happening.

So earlier on today I was watching a YouTube video and there was no sound. I figured maybe it was just the video, so I tried others, none of them had any sound. I checked the volume mixer; my system wasn't muted but Chrome doesn't show up in the applications as I'm pretty sure it should, regardless of there being any sound or not (Steam is in there, for example).

I tried watching another video and noticed it just continually pauses every few seconds. The play/pause button doesn't change, though, and pausing/unpausing doesn't help, you have to click on the timeline to get it to wake up. So, naturally I uninstalled Flash, or thought I did. The uninstaller claims that Flash is successfully uninstalled, but YouTube videos still work... Surely no Flash means no YouTube? Just in case it's no longer Flash-based, I've just tried right clicking on a game that I know for sure is Flash (Happy Wheels, extremely NSFW!) and clicked 'About Adobe Flash Player' and sure enough, I have version 11,3,31,222 installed.

I'm no stranger to Adobe nor Flash and frankly I can't express how much I hate either, I think Adobe's poor software was a large part of what drove me away from being a 'graphic communicator' (other than being unable to find a job, of course!) and Flash, well, Flash has always been the utter bane of my existence from before I was even born, which was long before Flash existed, actually.

I'm inclined to believe it's Flash that's at fault, but if I can't uninstall it then I'm not really sure what I can do about it. However that doesn't explain why Chrome isn't in the volume mixer. I'm using the latest version of Chrome (21.0.1180.60 m) and Windows 7 64-bit.

Thanks!

Have you tried playing something else like a cd? If still can't hear anything, it might be the sound card.

Everything else works fine, I get the beep when Windows is asking me if a program can make changes and I also get sound in games (Blacklight: Retribution and Tribes: Ascend). My sound card is a Xonar DX and I use headphones at the moment.

There are several problems with the latest Flash working on a number of browsers. Re-install a previous version of Flash, use a restore point to jump back before you had problems, or just wait it out until a fix is released.

It may be the youtube html5 player that is giving you problems. I never signed up for it and caused problems controlling the youtube player. I also uninstalled flash and downgraded from 11.3 to 11.2. That fixed all of my problems with youtube on firefox.

Thanks guys, I went to downgrade my version of Flash and discovered, distressingly, that Chrome has it built-in and automatically updates itself which is why it didn't appear to uninstall. I don't use any other browsers so I didn't actually notice that Flash has indeed been uninstalled until I tried to watch a trailer on Steam yesterday. Great! And I thought Chrome was perfect...

At times I get no audio with some youtube videos.
Also single click the speaker icon then select mixer when chrome is running, this will show the volumes for running applications, make sure it is not lowered for chrome.

That's the thing, Chrome doesn't show in the mixer at all, and I've not had audio with a single YouTube video since I posted this thread so there must be something wrong on my end.

I found out how to disable the built-in Flash (go to chrome://plugins, disable it there), so I'm downloading 11.2.202.235 to see if that works. If not then I guess I'll have to reinstall Chrome itself.

Edit: That fixed it. I only ran 'flashplayer11_2r202_235_win_64bit.exe', started up Chrome and tried a video I wanted to be able to hear earlier and it had sound and didn't pause every 11-12 seconds. Also Chrome is showing in the mixer again, which is interesting. Thanks for your input, guys!
