CNET.com Poll: Forza 3 vs. Gran Turismo 5

As I said a few days ago the tactics of Turn 10 community manager has certainly done alot more harm than good. What basically happened is word spread about Turn 10 tactics and this irritated the gaming community, so those who might not have voted for GT5 did so out of annoyance. I know for a fact some Forza veterans voted for GT5 because of the behaviour of Turn 10. So the end result is GT5 winning the poll, poll closed, Turn 10 reputation taking a nose dive.

If I was the director of Turn 10 I would be very unhappy with whats happened. From here what they should do is focus on what Forza 3 has to offer and ignore the competition. I don't understand why they keep referring to GT5 anyway because so little is known about this game and for this reason I would be wary of making such rash statements. Before taking on your competitors you need to do your homework but Turn 10 know as much about GT5 as we do (very little).

This whole voting business has left a sour taste in my mouth especially as the poll is meaningless. As I keep saying nobody will know which will be better and at the moment im planning on buying both. There will come a time when I have to choose which I want to spend more time on and based on my experiences of playing FM1/2 and GT series I would say GT5 is the more likely.

I just watched the two trailers, one after the other. The Forza cirucits look WAY too busy, with all the trees, rock formations, dams and bridges in the background; it's as if the art guys were told to go wild and the end result looks like something out of Ridge Racer.

Quoted for truth 👍

Just as GT5 was rocketing away.... I hope this teaches turn 10 a thing or two (or che) about marketing tactics.

Oh and I love how all threads at FM.net that criticises FM3 gets closed, whats the point of a official forum then?

Very few official forums allow overtly negative comments about the product, or allow supporting of other products. They usually let you talk a little bit about the bad points, but it'll get locked as soon as it turns into a "THIS PRODUCT SUCKS BALLS DON'T BUY IT... THE CREATORS ARE STUPID... THIS PRODUCT IS CRAP, BUY THIS OTHER ONE INSTEAD".

The official forum is there to support a product, not hurt it :p

I'm not a pro but doesnt all that detailed environnement waste the memory needed for car modeling and driving physics?

The thread's still there, it's just not a sticky anymore & everyone's avoided posting in it.

Kindo like the kid that's sitting in the corner digging in his nose with the finger he was just scratching his butt with.

I'd prefer a nice environment to a nice car model. I don't watch my car when racing, I watch the track. There has to be a balance, a nice car on a dull track will look out of place.

sarcasm?
Do you watch the rock and waterfall details when taking a corner at 150km/h?...

This was the 3rd last post on Che's wonderfull thread on Forzamotorsport.net by a fanboy.

Forza>y

Y=Everything other than Forza

Hah so math has taught me somthing

Vote casted

Found it particularly amusing, he obviously doesnt know that 15731 votes is a larger number than 14530 (rigged) votes.

I have a feeling we'll remember this poll for a long time

Their tactics were dirty, and therefore irrespective of which game will be better, they still deserved to lose. imo.

I'm sure as hell not looking at my car :p But there should be a balance. Most games make the cars look far nicer than the track they place them on, IMO at least. I'd rather slightly nicer tracks.

Them losing = everyone who owns a 360 losing.

I think we are more concerned about the cars than the environnement

Not sure whether you were being sarcastic there or not...

But no, it isn't the 360 owner's sales which are at stake, they can still go and play Forza quite happily. it's Microsoft and Turn 10 who are losing.

Well, I'll tell you one thing: I love the racing tracks around the world, and I always loved to race them ib GT4 and 3 and so on, but I just don't see anything realistic about racing 8 super cars through a mountain range with cliffs and turns that dangerous, and with a road that doean't look too safe. It may look beautiful, but to me I always enjoyed the real racing tracks in GT. Thats where you feel you are racing for the finish line.

Granted GT has some nice tracks on its own, but even the made up tracks of GT has a racing circuit feel to them (GV comes to mind).

And I totally agree with the RR comment, I was thinking the same thing all along. And I love RR, still playing RR7 myself :) Now that is dream racing.
I think forza is trying to go for the best in both worlds, but you can never achieve perfection that way I think.

I agree totally with what you just said there:tup:. The reason I said "irrespective of which game will be better" was because I was trying not to be too biased towards GT, which I personally think will be the better game. Not because I thought Forza will be better.

The official Gran Turismo forums has quite a lot of negative comments which don't get threads locked or deleted. To be fair the PAL forum is hardly moderated at all, but the US forum is.

I have no idea. My point was that the over-use of landforms makes the circuits look overly-cluttered. Take El Capitan as an example: there is one major landform, the granite precipice. It's prominent, and it is the dominant feature on the circuit. Sure, there are bridges and trees and tunnels and the like, but there's nothing competing with the mountain. Forza is a different story: there's a mountain, half a dozen rock formations, a dam, etc., and they're all visible at once, so it creates a real claustrophobic sense all around.

You might be, not everyone is. I like nice tracks to race through. Especially for street courses like the ones shown in Forza 3, makes me feel like I'm driving down a great country road with beautiful scenery.

Give me country twisty roads anyway, the reason I love Nurburgring and Mount Panorama so much, not to mention the Targa rallies.

I'd rather have perfect cars, but still gorgeous tracks = Gran Turismo 5 Prologue...

I don't get this, is there anything wrong with the tracks in GT5P!? I think they're... beautiful! The only things that could be done better IMO, is the croud, the grass and the road textures at some points.

EDIT: When I race, I'm concentrating on the road ahead, and perhaps the opponents in the mirror sometimes.

Actually I think the grass and road textures look pretty nice if you asked me!

I agree that the crowd could be better though, although it isn't too bad

New ego-boosting from T10.

Notice the last paragraph, it's very nice :) With all of it's implications.

He added: “The truth is there will be continued improvements. As first-party, we’re not cross-platform, we can use every improvement that’s made. So if someone figures out how to make… you name it… something they’ve done specifically for their game, we can figure out a way to make that work on ours.”

While it is true that being 1st party can give you benefits in development - what is he really saying? Hmmm?
I am really starting to despise this developer...

Thats no different to PD, being first party you have full support from the hardware maker/designer. I imagine this is the reason why GT has always pushed hardware further than most others on the same platform could. Just like Turn 10 has full Microsoft support.

I think you are missing my point though... oh well, never mind that.

Back to writing a paper..... 👎

I think he saying that if GT5 is better with certain features... then they will just add that into their game later on... which intern shows his insecurity about his OWN product... I dont know, this development team at turn 10 are a bunch of misfits... using old school style business techniques which Bill utilized back in the day when Netscape etc. existed.... talking down the competition whenever they can and handing out all the low blows they can to make themselves look better... In the end... Turn10 are shaking in their boots for what to expect from GT5... since Kaz keeps everything under wraps they know as much as we do... which scares them... this is only reaction/retaliation to their fear of the unknown... :)

You guys take this way too far. He's not stupid, he's aware that GT5 will have some nice features, just like every other racing sim on the market has some nice features (LFS, GTR, rFactor, iRacing, GT, Forza, Ferrari Challenge, you name it).

He's not saying "I'm scared", he's saying "if they do cool stuff and the community likes it, we can do it too in an update". That's a good attitude to have in a sim racer, because no one team will ever create the perfect sim.

You guys probably think I'm a Forza fanboy :p But just realise for some reason I like to stick up for the underdog, in this forum its Forza, if I were on a Forza forum, it'd be GT, but the last Forza forum I was on never had any GT bashing so I never had to :p

Im not bashing anyone.. I'm just telling you how I interpret what he's saying... and the way he puts stuff into context, there's a constant undertone suggesting FM3 is THE PINNACLE of all racing sims... To me that just means theres insecurity and he doesnt know what the competition is bringing... namely GT5... so now he's just blurting out whatever he can to try and make FM3 look better and shine the spotlight on them a little.... and THAT imo is just not necessary if YOU know your product is good and stand behind it... all that trash talk is NOT necessary and doesnt make them look any better...

I didn't say you were bashing :p Though I may have accidently implied it, so sorry for that ;) I just meant to say Forza is the underdog because everyone likes to rant about it here.

All of what he says is BS, of course :p But not because of GT5... its because PC sims do a lot of the things he's saying no one but Forza does (like complex tire modelling in Live for Speed).

I agree the trash talk isn't necessary, though I dont see it as them being scared or lacking confidence in their game, its just poor marketing.

Ok, point well taken.. I see where youre coming from and a poor marketing model also has a lot to do with it. Lets just hope that WE get what WE want out of both games in the end :)
