what does he mean when he say # right/left, as in "2 left" or "4 left?" what does the # mean? # of turns? degree of sharpness? gear for the turn?

Its how sharp the turn is. 1 is usually the tightest, like a hairpin, 10 is a very gradual turn that you probably dont even need to brake on.

He usually says 7 as a maximum, and you can take many corners one gear higher than the number he tells you.

I think it is the gear, he say 7 to mean that you can be at the very top of 6th gear

Unless PD messed it up (which wouldnt suprise me) its the severity of the turn, not the gear to be in.

This system uses numbers to describe the severity of bends, which is common, though others are used. Usually a 5-point scale is employed, with 1 being the gentlest of bends, with 5 being almost 90 degrees. Variations to this system may reverse the numbering system (1 being sharpest, 5 or 6 being slightest) and changing the scale to 6 points.

What is the # for U-Turn? the way I blast in a rally... I get that "Do Not Enter" roadsign at times :)

thanks! i'm stuck on the advanced rally special events. the dirt stage is giving me issues...

Not gonna lie, Im yet to listen to him and Ive completed novice through expert twice now :P

I find Metallica to be a MUCH better co-driver, or lamb of god, bit of disturbed... you get the point.

I know, the rally map is like right in the middle. 👍

Not sure if that was sarcasm or not.
The map being in the middle doesn't bother me, I can drive without the map bothering me at all, I can just "look through" it.

In GT5 hairpin is left/right 1. In real life they usually say hairpin if its a 180 degree turn or more.

The system used in GT5 is very similar to a popular system used in real life in which a number indicates how much you need to slow down relative to the speed you are traveling. For example 6 means you can take the corner at almost full thottle. 5 means you need to let off the gas for that corner or maybe touch the brakes. 4 means brake and shift one gear down, 3 means brake and shift 2 gears down, 2 means 3 gears down, 1 will mean that it is a really really slow corner. The problem with the co-driver in gt5 is that he gives the instructions at last second before a corner, and he does not include further usefull information such as don't cut or if the turn will be sharper at the exit.

Also, the co-driver in GT5 is not aware of elevation changes, do you can easily get caught by a "5" which actually is a "3" because there is a jump right before the corner. Since the AI also isn't aware of this on the self-created courses, I'd suggest this is a common problem throughout the whole game.
