I'm not the best driver, and when I do have contact and its my fault I back off and give way, my race craft does need lots of improvement but it's hard work trying to better yourself when all your gains are constantly put back by drivers that don't seem to give a toss on anyone else's experiance of the race
Right that’s why I said what I said. In the race, the most important thing is awareness.
Coming onto a straight I always check behind. Mid straight before the braking area also.
If you ‘lose’ the location of the other cars or traffic is heavy hold your lane, hold your line and leave space to your outside for a car until you get your bearings.
As far as getting punted or dove on etc...One huge thing is if someone is right behind you or has a run on the straight approaching the next braking zone, the standard behavior is moving over towards the inside-very very far before the braking area, leave the guy behind space on the outside to encourage them to pull alongside and pass by.
If you get to the braking area you are inside, so you brake a bit earlier than normal, and if they are still alongside you hold the turn tight-leaving them room.
You could also lift and brake early let them get the racing line and tuck right into their slipstream.
If you go defensive very early and some chump stays on your rear bumper and refuses to go around they are showing intent to harm you do brake extra extra early to prevent them from being able to punt you off-brakechecked!
Far as going side by side I try never to do that-never trust others. If they have you let them go, if you are fast enough you will catch them, if not you tip the cap.
Always pass on straights or by getting the INSIDE. Never pass outside. Passing in a turn is very dangerous.
If you are overtaking make sure you have the inside and are fully alongside BEFORE the braking zone. DONT brake late, brake normal and blend onto the racing line.
I’d say the best way to pass is by understanding braking on time or early NEVER LATE, getting a good line in through that turn will give you more speed where it’s easy to pass-on the straight!
I hope this helps ya. Stick with it, it’s like learning basic self defense lol.
If in doubt, don’t overtake...
Cheers
