Is pole farming a thing? I have always wondered about that because I watch race replays and see drivers that qualified in front of me and they drive awful and their whole dash blinks like an Xmas because they use every aid available. I dont see how anyone can be fast with ASM.

Absolutely. There are car/track combos that just suit some people. With a good qualy lap you can really farm poles during off-peak hours. For example the Toyota 86 Race C a couple weeks ago. With my clutch and H-shifter I admit I did some "pole farming". But the nice thing about those races is everyone was close on race pace. They were entertaining, suspenseful, intense. Lots of clean side-by-side action. Because it seems everyone that was starting up front deserved it. The people starting in the top 5 last night in my rooms didn't deserve to be there. Fair play to them, but this is one thing I am starting to dislike about the Weekly format. After a few days you get a lot of magic lappers starting up front who are in reality one or two seconds off a decent race pace.
 
I think with Race B that there are 2 parts of the tracks where you can make up loads of time, the 2 esses sections (into chicane and before last corner). To do these fast you are right on the edge, so when you nail it you are gaining maybe a whole second on your lap time.

If you do them wrong you crash, which is ok in practice but death in a race, so everyone is running a second or so off their lap times in the race just to be safe. Basically means that you can have 'slower' drivers with good qualifying times but no race pace.

I qualified with a 1:34.2 and my fastest lap was a 1:34.9 (finished 8th about 12 secs down on the winner). Neither is great, but I don't have the time to practice these combinations too much so there are loads of mistakes in my laps :)

Same here. I noticed something very odd. I am A/S and the rooms had a mix of A and B drivers with low 1:33 qualy times. I mean, like the TOP TEN were all sub- 1:34. With my 1:35 flat I was starting near the back. The thing is, once the race started, no one could break away. The leaders were slow. The whole pack was so bunched up that all 15 cars would finish lap 1 with only a 2 second gap across the entire field.

So I think what was going on last night was that you had a bunch of mediocre drivers who practiced for hours in the meta car until they got that magic lap, and then went into the race with a car they are more comfortable with and were completely off the pace. It was terrible.

Been a frustrating 5 days for me in GTS. I think this is the biggest problem with the weekly format. Too many magical laps and pole farming that just ends up putting inconsistent racers in front and steady/clean racers midfield/back of pack and we all end up taking each other out after getting fed up of racing in a pack 4 seconds of our normal race pace due to the fact that the leaders in race trim are light years behind their magical qualy lap.

I don't disagree in regards to the pace of the front runners, i have been surprised how well i can keep up with guys a solid 1 to 1.5 seconds per qualy lap faster than me. But i don't think that is the issue, last night I had one race as you described, REALLY tight qualy times all the way down to 14th, but the other two were massively gappy and still had drivers just being idiots and trying to pass from a half car length behind and clattering off me.

The penalty system really was fine, i have nfi why they changed it to allow side hits and to punish the guy being rear ended, it's absolutely ridiculous.

In regards to the recent past, the issue, as I have stated many times, is the rubbish tracks in this game. There's only a few proper actual tracks without a rollercoaster section or boogie corner, the rest encourage stupid passes. Ring GP, Gardens, mayyyyyyybe Maggiore have proper flow and passing, many of the others are either absolute rubbish (Fuji) or have bogey corners (Seaside).

I get what you're saying, the Race B combo is a deadly combo for inconsistent people. But you should have seen it last night. The frontrunners were braking BEFORE the 100m mark in turn 1, taking turn 2 in second gear, crawling through the hairpin yet still getting oversteer. The downhill S part wasn't that bad, and it's understandable for everyone to be cautious there.

The fact that there really is no real place to pass besides turn 1 means that it's very hard to get around slower people. And what I saw last night was not people being cautious, it was people being slow and lacking confidence in themselves.
 
Just a babe in a black abyss. No reason, for a place like this. The walls are concrete and souls cry out in pain.... Yes, the madness that is...Race B :rolleyes:. I took on qualy with the Oh what a feeling! FT-1 and managed to shave a little off my time. P7/14 on a grid of DR/B, C and D. Only the one mystery C. Half the grid my peeps.

Race started and I got smacked at the chicane, and again at the next corner. I just couldn't manage it in the recommended gear so I had to drop it down to 1st, turn in sharpish then power out at an appropriate moment. I was seeing orange SRs even when there was no apparent contact. Possibly a lag thing, I had 2 bars. I finished P10 after having a difficult time getting past the slower traffic and trying not to hit anyone. The brakes on the FT-1 don't seem as dreck hot as some :odd:. Lost a bit over 200 DR and 1 SR.

Race 2 had me starting P11/16 with 7 DR/Ds. I managed to get caught out on the ripple strip on the exit to the first, more harsh downhill esses and spun. Down to last place as I tried to re-enter the track safely :yuck:. That left me struggling to get past the guy in front who was *realy* slow, but he was covering all my passes, and I was struggling to not hit him. I even went off track on the outside in an attempt to avoid him :crazy:. He finally came off and I was able to set about a very long road to the next place ahead. It's very had to reign back when you have a good run through the esses. I finally managed to get some laps in without hitting the wall on the exit to the first esses :D! Finished P12. Lost another 300 DR and gained 2 SR.

3rd bite at the cherry and I qualified P8/14. 3 DR/Bs and the rest a mix of Cs and Ds. Things went a bit better for me:

Finally a result! I regained what I'd lost from the previous 2 races with a 13pt surplus :dopey:. SR went up 7 :D. Another day above DR 1 :p.
 
You know when people post on here and say that they will not be racing this week due to poor tracks / poor cars etc. I usually just roll my eyes and move on, but this week that person is me.

Race A: I cannot stand the slow wallowing Nissan on this track.
Race B: I am struggling to get into a good rhythm. I finally set a reasonable qualy time. When I did try a couple of races, I was basically punted off most laps. DR and SR plummeting.
Race C: Don't have the car, or the credits to buy it, which is a shame as I like the track.

Roll on next week.
 
I read several players on this forum have had a bad experience with Race B. I have to report the opposite. I have gained 6,000 DR over the week and went from SR 60 to 99.👍
So how is this possible ? Well, one of the keys I noted is to get a second or more in front of anyone before you get to the S chicane on the first lap and ALSO try and not get too close to the guy in front as you go trough it .... I've been starting in the field between 4-7 and with drivers with SR A and B and DR A or B. Once the field starts to stretch out a bit, then it gets easier to avoid a punt.

UPDATE: Today I started 12th and got punted hard in the hairpin ! I looked at the replay and he completely missed the braking point and used me instead 🤬
I guess that at least solidify my theory that a start up in the field will help ....;)

You either have to be quite a bit faster than the car in front, have a nice slipstream or wait for a mistake to pass really. Also, when the times are close its often the case that the lead car will defend a lot and the following players get impatient and accidents happen.

Turn one is an obvious place to pass but its not the only place.

You can pass just before the last corner if you get a decent run through the fast downhill esses. The essess can also be taken flat in the "peoples" car. Though get the line wrong and you'll be straight into the wall.

There are also passing opportunities into the other fast right hander about half way through the lap. After the downhill out of the hairpin players often take the first tight left too fast or get unsettled on the curbs and lose out on a lot of speed going back up the hill.

Both of these rely on players making some kind of mistake, but even a small one will do, fortunately both of these places appear to be popular places for mistakes.

If bigger mistakes happen, like through the 2nd and 3rd corners, you can also overtake up the hill into the hairpin if close enough.


Qualifying times are often the result of one lucky lap or repeated lap resets, rather than a consistent pace with a few tenths chiselled off. If you can be consistently quicker you'll blow these players away as they'll end up off track more often than not. Fighting for position slows you down too.

Never been so close to the Top 10 before. My best qualy time before last night was about 1:06.6, which was good for #31 at the time. After a bunch of races using that time and racing behind a couple top 10 guys, I was sure I could find some more time, and was able to squeeze out another .6 on my first attempt in between races. I know I left at least .2 on the track, so I may try to break into that list today for the first time ever. Already a huge accomplishment for me, so I’m pretty pleased, especially since I didn’t have to spend very much time pole-farming...lol.

Shout-out to a few GTP members that I met last night. You guys are always a shining example of sportsmanship and racecraft.

AFter some races yesterday night without any problems, impossible to enter a single race today due to a bug i suppose.
The first path with players selection is ok but after this , it send me back to the initial daily races screnn.

Every time that happens to me I restart the PS4 and it works after that. I think it’s more likely to happen if your PS4 enters rest mode when you’re taking a break, so if you’ve had the game open for awhile but haven’t been playing, try restarting it anyway to avoid the bug. No guarantee this prevents it, but it’s been happening to me less often since I began restarting regularly.

That's better. They did the exact same race in the week of August 13th, exactly 2 months ago. GR.3 is probably the best on that track anyway. I tested all the cars back then and settled on the Lexus RC F in the end for best balance between speed and fuel use (for me).

I will be racing again next week!

I can come back from a long hiatus lol
Enjoyed racing the mountain last time time on Asian server, seems that people over there are bit more cautious with hill part.

Entering the race from tag watch worked for me right now too..

Restarting the game is enough, after every race that is. I never had it again during my marathon Nordschleife racing once I got in the habit of closing the game when done with the post race chat. I did get it before, even as the second race already. You can get many races in a row without restarting, however the chance it will break goes up with every race and the only way out is restarting the game. (Clearing network cache, resetting the online connection is not enough and more work anyway)

Though I like Mt. Panorama, I can't say I share Sven's enthusiasm.

Of the hundreds of possible car and track combinations, are they seriously so out of ideas that they have to do a repeat after 2 months? It could be that P.D. just doesn't really care that much, anymore.

Coming up with 3 new races per day was apparently too much of a burden, now coming up with 3 new ones every week is just too much to ask.

While I am appreciative of the new content P.D. is regularly providing, I think the way they run the Sport Mode racing sucks.

I don't know why they didn't just make a simple algorithm to randomly generate a car/track combo

The interesting thing is that back when races were Daily, PD still stayed away from crazy race combos, like Gr.B races for example. There was only ever a handful of those.

Now that they've switched to weekly, they're doing the same races they were before.

Granted that Gr.3 @ Bathurst is an insanely popular combo, I can come up with awesome combos right off the top of my head that we have never had before.

I guess people like me are supposed to stick to lobbies, which admittedly, I vastly prefer to Sport Mode.
