I don't know what it is, but there's definitely some mileage in the idea that the angle/speed you go over some kerbs counts. The last time Le Mans was an FIA race I was watching @Tidgney and he was getting penalties on some laps and not others and genuinely couldn't figure out why.

Yup, there's 2 things with this;

1) It's angles, so like at redbull ring where if your 2 left wheels go out on turn 1 first you don't get a penalty vs if you're right wheel goes out with your left you do, you have to be really careful. The only thing I can think of with this (I don't personally get the wheel count thing) is the game thinks you're on a straight if your left wheels go out where as if you fully go out with your right wheels it sees it as a corner.

2) It's about advantage gain, Kaz has talked about this a little in the past. So I got 1 at Le Mans in the IGTL World Series because I nailed the corner but because I had slipstream on the exit the game thought I gained an advantage as I was carrying more speed. Penalties (From memory) are calculated with the A.I. in mind and what they do. Was in an interview awhile ago I believe, so if I had let off instead on that chicane for example I wouldn't have got one.

I would argue the penalty system is to complicated to this extent, but there's lots of little quirks. It can also definitely be abused.

Maybe this should be in the penalty thread, but it's about a daily race too, so here it is. All week while racing Le Mans, I've exited Mulsanne corner on the left side, most times straddling the curb. Left tires to the left, right tires to the right (on the track). Never got a penalty for it. But while running some qualifying laps earlier, I go a track limit half second every single time. Had to work to develop the new line. And it goes against someone's video advice earlier. That if you slide off toward the beach, straddle the curb and stay to the left edge as you come back on. Insult to your injury would be an additional penalty for playing safe.

Just run first race C started 17 finished 13 lol only cos everyone else left hahaha didn't even get to finish the race.

Yet I get 0.5 for going slightly over the line (wide) at Mulsanne, saving the corner but 1.5 sec slower than normal.
Same thing happened at Arnage, lose time going slightly wide but keeping the car in control, 0.5 sec penalty.
Then I see a car gun it full speed all the way out at Maison Blanche, no penalty. I go an inch over the line at a much shallower angle 0.5 sec.

That all happened when I was DR.A, maybe DR has something to do with it. After DR reset track cut penalties seem to be less as well. I'm still going at the same lap times...

I wish it was more consistent instead of this guess work all the time. Then I get the clean race bonus with 2 of those mystery "ignoring track limit" penalties during the same race.

I've given up trying to figure penalties in race C. I've seen people go straight through the first chicane and come back on, at speed, with no penalty. I have had some fun there, though. Racing from the back, it seems I can manage low 10's if I can stay clean, but no faster. I do think my braking feel has gotten better this week. SR has taken a beating, and I dropped to C. May get a reset if I'm not careful.
I decided to try B to see if I could get some SR back. My time in the GT1 this week has improved my racing. I went in cold...got one full lap before the race started. Drove the Aston, was smooth and patient even though the SR-C crowd was rowdy as ever. Pretty proud of this finish, and the CRB.

Edit: Back to SR B after a couple more clean and semi clean races in the Aston. Back to LaSarthe to finish the night. Good races. Got FL in both on L5 running down that final spot, and managed to somehow get an 08.6 and an 08.9 to get 'em. First times out of the 10's in a race.

Got to do what you got to do. One of the best things to learn is what races you can really run and have fun with and which ones are just painful for you. I still try to get out and hot lap on my bad ones to practice and get better, but definitely dont race them until I know what I am doing.

As slow as I learn some tracks that seems to be never.

As much fun as I have had with race C I might have to give it a break tonight. Not sure what to do next week as I am beyond hopeless at DT Gardens in either direction and not very capable on the Nord. Hmmmm.

Practice? What? Why would I bother with that?

Will be doing the FIA anyway, but might be looking at Steep instead, unless the car for the Nord is good. Maybe Brands in race A as well.

Or could try and get out to catch a few people on my NA alt.

This was an awesome night for racing. I didn't think Saturday nights could be this good in GT Sport

A clean streak of 6 There was some light side by side contact in a few races, but no penalties! Something has improved 👍

The 7th race was a mess, match making error. I started behind an A+ driver with 3 more non qualifiers behind us and D/S drivers in front of us. First there is a mess at the chicane, managed to avoid. Then a D/S driver brakes oddly for Dunlop and the A+ runs in to him, I avoid that but now I'm in between the D/S and A+/S driver. The D/S driver brakes even weirder for the left turn after Dunlop, ping pong, Newton's cradle, D/S goes off I get the 3 sec penalty.

The rest of my race went great, finished 3rd and only lost 2 SR for the race. The A+ driver however.... Ugh he had bad night. I checked his profile, straight 99 SR, 64K DR, after the race 46 SR, 40K DR reset. That's the stuff why people avoid sport mode and we get this ugly matchmaking, vicious cycle. I feel bad for him. One of the SR Downs he got was when we touched on the straight tucking back behind each other. No clue why the penalty system gave him 1 sec penalty for that. Maybe lag made it worse or it's because he was A+, more punishing.

I did one more race after and finally broke the 3:08 barrier

3:07.604, with drafting. (Without drafting I got down to 3:08.2, final lap lowest fuel weight)

Great night! Ending at 99 SR for a change.

Ran two C yesterday after that 90 minute race and was surprised by the clean environment on track.
This week's race C propelled my NA account to a new time high at the cost of a little SR, but last night the SR went from 84 to 94 in two races.
A win and a second place.
The Mazda is my weapon of choice and sofar has been able to do well in it

The highs and deep lows of race B. Down to SR A.

Thanks to three clowns in three consecutive races, taking me out in the final corner on the last lap, from .5s back. Then to cap it all off, I'm deemed guilty, first time stuck with a 2s penalty. The second time given a 4s penalty. The last time another 4s penalty.

The icing on the cake, two cars right in front of me, collide, one spins out and ends up sideways across the track right in front of me. T-boned him just before he ghosted. Another 4s penalty, because somehow I was the guilty party...

Frustrating to have an entirely clean race. But still end up with a net SR loss cause someone spun you out on the very last corner.

EDIT: Next race, I spin out, get hit by another car. No ones fault except my own. I get slapped with a 2s penalty and now SR B... When it rains it pours

Well. I certainly have enjoyed my week at Le Mans. Got my DR up. Kept my SR up. I think by the nature of this track, with the cars having a large separation between them after the first lap, it really helped. As did my (wimp?) tactic of starting from the back, to let the carnage happen and capitalize on it.

I did set a Qual. time yesterday, but had bad left leg and foot cramps during the night. It still feels like it could seize up, so I doubt I'll be racing today. Maybe try to better that Q time for fun. But will look forward to going back to my seesaw rollercoaster DR history graph next week.

I and the rarri are having a deep affair. This car made me a much better pilot i believe. I'm getting all the victories today, mostly super clean as i get the pp and run for my life.
This is the first car i can drive tcs 0 full race and finish clean, plus i get the victories, fastest laps... Powersliding all the way precisely.
I love this car!

I got the answer to my earlier question, do you keep the fastest lap after getting disconnected, yes and no.

Someone set FL and got DCd later. His FL carried to the end of the race but in his stats the fastest lap counter did not go up. So no one got the fastest lap credit in that race. He did lose 2,027 DR and 12 SR. Don't get disconnected

Btw, bump drafting is fine but you need to bring the speed difference down before pushing. I lift off the accelerator to lower the speed delta to 5kph before starting to push a R92CP up to speed with the 787B. Follow right behind then out brake at Mulsanne, works great.

^^^^That move is technically a kamikaze. I give him high marks for accuracy by taking his victim out without collateral damage, but he loses points on the basis of taking himself out.
A true punt is when your opponent ends up ghosted and reset or stuck in sand or damage and you get ten or 12 seconds ahead with no or only a 2 second pen.
Here we see some advanced techniques. Now, initially here there appears to be no opening

However with careful braking control and good aim at the quarter panel this can be achieved as we see here the initial slight shove...

So now the advantage is gained...The 911 is past!
However the vette driver here thinks quickly and accepts a track limits pen to return the favor...Also opening up the steering ten degrees mid corner...

The end result is shown here...

This technique is applied by ARTOFWAR certified level 4 drivers as needed.
It’s the #turnedthetablesonyou maneuver.
It’s useful in certain situations.

New record, 3 'ignoring track limit' penalties and still clean race bonus. The higher my DR gets the more hair trigger the 'cutting track' penalties seem to get. But still SR up after every 'short cut'. Make up your mind game, am I cutting the track or staying inside the 'lines'. I guess they're just 0.5 sec penalties for speeding in a school zone.

x7 for race C, not much. It's x5 this week on Sarthe and has hardly any effect. But maybe it will wear a bit on the FF cars.

Always a pleasure learning from a master. Corner choice is key. One of my favorites, at Interlagos, is the last sharp left before the straight. The track drops off, and there is grass. Respawning seems to take a long time. I prefer the late brake bump. If timed right, and you're on the brakes near the normal point, the bump is just enough to push them off, and slows you enough to easily make the corner. Often, if you're close enough (which is why you wait for the right corner), they brake early, worried about the punt, and you may send them off, and give them a brake check penalty to boot!

The "Charlie Brown" is another favorite defensive maneuver given that the target is likely on tilt, and will usually provoke a rage quit when done properly. That said, it is difficult and all about timing. When done right, however, it is a beautiful sight to behold.

When you know the punt is coming...

1. Set-up to block the inside, leaving plenty of room on the outside.
2. Slightly early brake
3. Maintain 80% brake pressure (will also mitigate the effect of punt if it connects).
4. Fake turn-in and swerve to the outside.
5. Initiate turn-in after punter sails past.
6. If they are going to make the corner, then initiate the PIT - otherwise let them fly into the wall/sand/etc. for a penalty free smile.

1 Race C this morning. Started 7th/finished last. Was doing well until half way. Missed Mulsanne corner, twice. Like a chump.

Didn't lose that much DR so I guess I was punching above my weight. Sven was on the grid. I was ghosting when he passed and didn't see him again. Really wanted to do better and race with him.
