Had 2 spins this morning before work when it first changed over. Was top qualifier with a 49:3 in the Megane for EMEA... probably won’t be by the time I get home an look again ha! Find 4m an 6s work well or vice versa depending on starting position. High 52’a 53’s with the mediums and 51’s an 52’s with the softs.
Some of the moves are very questionable though that some folk are pulling, making gaps that don’t even exist an just pushing your way through up the inside makes for very very frustrating racing. The penalty system just seems to be non existent, doesn’t matter how hard you get hit on the inside aslong as it’s door to door it seems you go penalty free. I need to get faster so I can simply qualify P1 an finish P1 every race to avoid the dive bombing carnage during this current penalty system we have in place !!

There seems to be a few of these around. Unfortunately unlike most racing games they seem to want you to emergency stop for the offending car. Had a fun custom race last week. I decided to chalk a win on one of my slow cars so chose a track where cars couldn't get away. As it's barely used (for good reason) I chose Horsethief Mile. 10 laps with a grid start. Should be enough to get a win. The cars behind just fell to the bottom of the hill and stayed there. Any that could reverse back to the top were sent back down to the bottom by a passing AI car. Of course knowing that there are no penalties really for yellows I went passed AI cars in S3. Must of racked up 20 odd seconds of penalties (which I found time to easily get rid of) and still won. Maybe when they adjusted the penalty system they made this one more sensitive.
Might have just touched the wall with my tyre on the CoD... what do you think?

I raced again last week as the 787B is too much of a joy to race on Sarthe not to. So I got to compare the second week of (almost) no penalties to N24 a while back with totally broken penalties.
The difference is going from 19K to 33K DR instead of getting DR reset every day
All still without qualifying but now I ended up in the highest rooms (A+/S A/S). Racing wasn't any cleaner there, still mostly dependent on time of day, day of the week as always. Hit 'n runs were rampant in the high DR rooms, but thanks to 30+ second pit stops and the field split between 5M/1H, 1H/5M, 2H/4M, I hardly saw anyone during most races. (Doing 2H/4M in the 787B) Yet whenever a Hdi fap had the chance they would try to barge through, run me off leaving me with an ignoring track limits penalty.
It seems the higher the DR, the less variation in cars used and the less sportmanship on the track. People in lower DR rooms did leave room, pulled over to give the position back after a dodgy move (some, definitely not the majority, but more than in higher DR rooms) and even apologized after the race (A+ almost never apologizes, only if they know you, it's always because ur slow)
Great racing in the high DR B, low DR A rooms (I got to hear my favorite sound, 2 787Bs creating harmonies next to each other), A+ A rooms sucked.

Idea: Your grid position is based on how well you qualify in that specific car.

I hate that it's possible to qualify with cars that are great on a hot lap but you would prefer to use a bicycle that actually use it over full race distance. For sure it should be race what you set your qualy time with.
Edit: if you want to race a different car then either beat your previous Q time or you start at the back of the grid or my preferred option in the pits and not allowed out till everyone who set a time has gone past.
It will never happen this game is not sim enough for those sort of options

Wish this were the case, or if you could chose to delete a time.
With the penalty system as it is. I practice and do quali on my main account. But only hop in to races on an alt (same DR, but usually slower quali times).

I have no idea why people keep wanting to develop grids that just ensure the fastest guy is always at the front. By keeping it as it is, you get guys fast over one lap who are with a slower lap, potentially creating action in the race.

Another idea, once you decide on a car, you sign a 1 week trial contract with the Manufacturer. Use that data to calculate which car you suit for FIA.

Well the META seems to be shifting was the Megane (why Slophy? Mophy might make some sense) now it looks like the WRX was tried and then surpassed by the 4C . Well when I was testing I gave up on lap 3 with the WRX and think I made it to the 1st corner with the 4C before binning that. Might try something else if this race is even half decent, but if it's dodgems I'm going back to FIA practice.

With the way the penalty system has always been, it's no surprise people prefer a parade instead of a race. Any potential action either means bad penalties or dive bombed off the track without consequences. Drive the meta, stay in line, GT formation laps
Perhaps the fix is to turn it into B-Spec. You set a quali time, watch the race play out in B-Spec, earn DR, done

So Q6 (thought it was 7, either losing it or someone quit) started on meds and wasn't too bad a race. Got bumped a few times, but mostly mistakes rather than malicious...until pits came out 5th and got 4th as others stopped and then 3rd let me by. Sure he was on meds and didn't think fighting was sensible, I was going much faster. Then we had the guy in the GT-R constantly dive bombing and he nudged me out as I was setting up 2nd. Managed to finish 3rd but would have liked to know would I have got 2nd???
Next race 7th to again 3rd. Some really nice clean driving and a couple of "lets use other cars to turn better" pillocks. Still overall was enjoyable and really nice to see that even now there are some trying to race properly....OH and that was at C, back to B now so will see if it's better or worse a bit later.

I messed around some with this one error the weekend, Autopolis being another track I haven't raced yet. Found the Ferrari to be best for me, but haven't done it with tire wear yet. Try that tonight after work.

My thoughts and predictions after a couple of weeks of "almost no penalties".
The races have become more "bumpy" - that's clear. The more interesting outcome is the changing player mix. Anyone who wants to be SR.S can make that level. Since they do not get reset their DR will increase to reflect their skill. It means there are whole new groups of players joining the A/A+ ranks:
- First, there are the "rubbing-is-racing" types. I like those guys. Tough and clean racing comes with incidental bumping. I am good with that. Their return to the A rank is refreshing. Contact that punts a player, aggressive dives, and the high speed destabilizing contact is not acceptable... that is not rubbing that is just dirty.
- Next, there are the "redeemables". Fast types that use super aggression vs skill as a way to stay in the game. I was able to chat with a dive bomber without calling him a dive bomber. I suggested that he could be better if he did not start his passes from so far back leading to overshoots. Get in the slip and so on. Within a day or two he was passing me... cleanly...
. I like those guys too. - Then, there are the "irredeemables". They just will not change. They stay aggressive and if they get passed or if there is any contact they go into full hunter mode. I got to watch a former nemesis. I thought I had seen the last of him. Now he is SR.S/DR.A but still up to his old tricks and he has many. For the most part he is so far back in my review mirror (figuratively and literally) that I do not need to worry about him. He has not developed his game and his skill is stunted. He stills hunts down others and ends with DFLs.
- Finally, there is the rest of us. The game has changed. Some will leave, either permanently or for a while - I took a little break last week. Either way, this group needs to adapt and there are opportunities for this group... read on.
Prediction:
While more are joining the A/A+ ranks, there is also a good opportunity for present A players to advance to A+. D/C/B lobbies should now improve and also provide more opportunity. Note, I have used A players as a reference but the same logic applies to present B and C players. My logic:
- Sport mode is mostly a zero sum game where points are shifted between players during a race. In general, no new points are inserted due to one race.
- There are exceptions when points are added. When a player joins 2000 points are added to the pool. When a player has 0 points I think the game creates new points to pay the better placed racer.
- There are exceptions when points are removed. When player is reset points are removed. I think players get capped at 75,000 points.
- After a while a sort of balance or equilibrium between the two exceptions is reached. The only way to advance is at the expense of others.
- That equilibrium is now broken. The guys with DR.15000 now have DR.33000 and the resets will not happen. It means more points are available for sharing until a new higher equilibrium level is reached. That is the opportunity for present skilled players.
- D/C/B lobbies should now be more competitive as the super fast but reckless types have moved up. There will now be fewer A-level sandbaggers. It will provide an opportunity for D/C/B players to advance since the fast-sandbaggers are not sucking away your DR points. Plus, there will be better opportunities to win races.

Gotta agree with this. Raced the 962 most of the week, though I did try the 787 and the diesel. I can't count how many times I was rear ended mid-corner, sending me wide, or off. You would think, with the mandatory tire choices, that people would understand that certain car, tire combos might not allow your ultimate corner speed. If you don't like getting slowed in corners, or passed on the straights, switch cars! My main account had DR going up and down. Most races got messed up by 050's hitting me mid corner, but I did manage a podium and a top 5 or two. Got a couple 3rds and 2nd from the back. Found that 2/h 4/m worked best for me. Once the hards were warm, I could make up ground, and the L2 pit didn't drop me back as far. Yes it really does suck at top end, if it had a bit of speed I could pass on the pit straight as it is you drop back even in the slip.

Oh and while we are on things I would like to change in daily races,
If you go off track without contact to other cars no track reset for you. Drive that sucker out of the gravel and back on track. Then maybe think about slowing down so you can actually make the corner on the next lap. I would say no track reset period but that would be a bit harsh on folks who get punted, realistic but harsh.
Also fix dropping track reset cars on top of other cars, one it scares the crap out of me when that happens and two it usually results in an unavoidable 3 second penalty. Had that happen a couple of times last week, heart attack then annoyance in rapid succession.

I was so friggin happy to wake up this morning and realize that that GT4 Spa race was gone. Spa is the bane of my existence, I hate that track, it's impossible to pass anybody, the entire lap demands utter precision, and if you make a mistake anywhere you lose tremendous amounts of time.
I wake up to a BRZFRS race which is hilarious and I'm pretty good at, an Autopolis race which is a track I've never driven before this morning but am already doing well at, and of course GT3 death chicane which I'm not particularly interested in.

Apologies for the contact in Mulsanne last week, you left before I had a chance to in game. It was a messy approach in the traffic behind you and I parked it on the apex to avoid the rest, right in your path :/
The chicane at the end was the worst with TS050s and Hdi Faps trying to drive straight through me. The 787B has to slow down more for the 2 chicanes which usually leads to getting bumped, sometimes into a reset, other times into a "ignoring track limits" penalty, and sometimes they dive in so aggressively they ghost and pass through me. (best outcome lol)
I was happy to get 12th (from the back) in the A+/A rooms, 3:20 lap times were far out of my reach! Best lap I saw on the track was 3:19, my best 3:24. Anyway see you again when the Nord is back, or more GR.1 fun.

I have no idea how you can do well at autopolis but not Spa. Every corner except the bus stop feels natural at Spa, organic, like it naturally follows to press the car through the next turn. A good portion of Autopolis feels like someone put it together on track building software on a console, so damn random.

I think Spa is a great track for time attack but the curvy sections are so high speed that there's basically only one effective line. For a B-skill driver like myself there's only two passing zones, three at best, because the post-au Rouge chicane can be take two-wide pretty effectively. Because of the limited passing opportunities you have to put together perfect laps, lap after lap, to make sure you're where you need to be to take advantage of the draft. Without the draft, you're not passing at Spa. Autopolis seems to have much more speed variation, multiple lines in several corners that don't kill your momentum, and I'm passing effectively in at least four areas.

Guys that have been playing for a number of years, is the current pen system likely to stay in place for a long period?
I'm really struggling to find the enthusiasm to play the daily races. I understanding the changes to the system but for me personally, it's made the races borderline intolerable

The penalty system cycle is almost seasonal. Around 4 changes a year. Around the same noticeable changes. Lately, it's been jumping from Winter to Summer, skipping the transition seasons. Borderline tolerable has been the temperature for most of the time.

I agree with that, spa is hard to pass, hands down. Into Stavelot (end of Kemmel) if you take the inside you need to trust the outside man as he will now have the inside for the left hander, BUT, you then have the run for the key corner of Malmedy which should see you take the place as you drive into Rivage.
TBH most of the time I make places by pressing folks into Pouhon, people get emotional and try to brake a touch later than normal and butcher it. Always keep a tight line through Pouhon.
Autopolis is like, "oh understeer on this corner eh, oh and this one, well this one too, wonder what the next.....yeah more understeer ......"

Ollie mentions another problem, arguably the biggest problem with that particular daily race last week. Rolling start. Ugh. Why on earth are the cars so far apart for rolling starts? I was perpetually starting behind the final chicane (matchmaking hates me) and if I didn't kill that chicane then I was immediately out the draft and the race was basically over.
Edit: When he started in 3rd place during that video the initial gap between 2nd and 3rd was .951, while the gap between 3rd and 4th was over a second which is just ridiculous. Everything he says in this video is spot-on.
