Thought I'd pose this question here, amongst friends : )

So last night I loaded up one of the top 10 guys for Race C to follow around while I did some qualifying. 2 things struck me:

1. How much wider they are when approaching a turn than I am. Which was a good learning point, I can do that, not a problem.

2. And this is where my question is going to come from; how much smoother they were going around corners. I tried like heck to mimic their width, their line, and their breaking point, and instead, all I did was slide like I was on an icy surface. Yet, they just kept smooth and kept going.

So as a group of faster drivers, I'm asking, how do you go around these corners without sliding so much? I am not a DS4 user, I do have a wheel. Granted it's a G29, so I don't have anything fancy. Maybe it's a brake/gas ratio around the corners? I've often wondered if maybe I'm stepping on the brake too hard, afraid to miss a breaking point. One thing I have noticed since I'm starting to understand brake balance and how it works is that I can brake a little later and I have gotten faster on tracks that I do know (I've been pretty good at Brands Hatch this week, as an example).

Any thoughts? I can upload a video later after work if needed.
Two things:
- Try a different view. If you're not using the chase cam, give it a go. It's all I use, because I can see my entire car, and notice anything that's going on with it. I think it's the best view for non-experts to use.
- Do upload a video. 👍

It really depends on the type or corner and how much speed you are trying to carry into it, but without seeing a video a couple things come to mind.

You already hit on one, which is brake balance. I'm not the most adept at explaining the mechanics of how it works or picking apart every aspect of the physics involved, but I find that adjusting the BB will change how your car reacts upon turn-in while trail-braking. Trail-braking is the only way to brake as late as the aliens do, but the key moment is when you start to release the brake and begin to turn-in. Initially, most people will brake 100% (assuming you're using ABS default) and then start to release the brake around the same time they are expecting to turn in. That moment when you begin to release the brake, even if only a tiny amount, you are allowing your front tires much more ability to turn-in because they are no longer being used for 100% braking. You can try this by braking fully and attempting to turn in slightly, the front wheels won't respond much especially if you're carrying a lot of speed. While maintaining your steering position, release the brake just a tiny bit and you will suddenly turn in more dramatically then you were when you were braking 100%.

I find that if you release the brake too much when first turning in, especially after the most recent couple of updates, most cars will step out more than intended. Try going from 100% braking to 90%, to 80% and so on, until you find the maximum amount of turn in, while avoiding excessive sliding. Before the recent updates you could release the brake more without sliding. Now, more incremental releasing of the brake is required to achieve maximum turn-in without sliding.

Changing the BB will likely help either increase or decrease this effect, depending on the type of car....FR, MR, FF etc. you may have to move it to the front or the rear. Just remember if you're sliding it's because you're asking the car's wheels to do too much at once. It's up to you to figure out what you're doing too much of. You either decrease your speed by holding the brakes for longer, or by releasing it less upon turn-in. Or if you feel you are carrying the right amount of speed, then maybe you're turning your wheel too much upon initial turn-in for the speed you're trying to carry. So turn-in more gently and in increments that correlate with the increments in which you are releasing the brakes.

I hope all of that babble makes sense. I'm not the best at explaining it.

Ok gents, below is the video. Qualifying for race C, using the R8, no TCS, BB set for -3, ABS is on. No CSA or that anti Spin helper. As stated earlier, using G29 wheel and pedals, nothing fancy.

I should note, I'm using a op 10 ghost.

@sturk0167 I did a lap using chase cam, I don't know, I felt like I was in the 80's playing Pole Position or Outrun

@Winnie847 your "babble" (it wasn't, it was helpful), was put to use I'm this lap, or I at least attempted to.

So comments are appreciated. And of course jeers, trolling and wise cracks, are always real crowd pleasers.

I want to start by saying that I don't think I'm better at this stuff than anyone else.

I think that generally, you brake too late, or in some cases, too much. I say that because in several turns you're still slowing down in the middle of the turn, when you should have been done with your braking, and begun accelerating again. That's why you're not hitting many of the inside curbs, which the fastest guys always do. The last turn before a straightaway is always crucial for time. On the last turn in your video, you braked twice, and at the start of the lap, you braked once for the same turn, but did too much. Like @Winnie847 said, the car tuns way better when you're not braking. At 1:39 in your video, there's a cone on the left. Hit that cone with your left front bumper, while at full throttle. 👍 I made a demo for you. --> 🤬 that cone!

You don't need to literally need to hit the cone. The idea is just to get slowed down early enough that you could go that low if you wanted to.

Another thing I strongly recommend is to ditch the manual transmission for now. At least on Gr.3 or faster cars. Those cars have excellent automatic transmissions that are really good at picking the right gear. There are plenty of M/T snobs that don't know about it, because they won't try it.

I'm not suggesting that A/T is faster. What I am saying is that adding all that shifting into the mix is muddying the water, at this point. I'd say it's putting too much on your plate, for now. Unless you're really good, it will hurt more than it helps. Please go try a bunch of laps with auto trans. Just don't think about anything other than gas, brake and turning. I'd bet you'll smoke your previous best time in less than 10 laps. You will also have less stress.

About 80% of my wins have been with A/T.

Hoping to be around tonight, haven't done much racing though!

General concepts...
For me the key point is wheels perfectly straight to begin braking for gr3 and 4. Then turn wheel in a bit releasing the brake. You should feel what you are after in the ffb.
The reason better drivers cars are more stable is they manage the cars weight balance. In turns the car is ‘loaded up to some degree). When the car is loaded up it’s far more stable and can sustain curbs and bumps from other cars.
Undrbraking the car stands on its nose a bit. You wanna keep the car level as much as possible by smoothly releasing the brake.
The key thing imo to get is to be able to get a feel for when you turn in correctly and get the cars suspension loaded up. With the gt cars in game if you just try to turn the wheel to go round a corner it won’t work.
If you can get the car squatted, a bit of throttle keeps it squatted on many corners with mr cars.
Line up your approach brake all the way in a straight line release brake while blending wheel turn.
I will say it takes a right smart amount of practice to get a feel for it. With the ffb it’s kinda of like you are amanaging the weight of the car.
The more level the car can stay the more traction you will have (four wheels have more traction than 2)
It’s practice, but I suppose if you were super analytical you could study the telemetry I dunno if you are that type, I’m not, I just drive...
The key is the sequence of events and once you start to get it you gotta practice because it’s a coordination thing also.
I think sound settings are crucial, turn tire squeal way up. That helps me a lot.
Anyways I hope maybe some of my rambling helps you...If not at least I tried.
Have fun tonight guys, sorry, but I will not make it (really wanted to run b with you fellas but it’s not gonna happen...)

Looking forward to racing at Brands Hatch tonight with you guys.

BTW, thanks for everyone's help this week. I do not think it's a coincidence that this week I got my first win in a daily race.

I even got to run a few races in Z28's stream yesterday, that was quite the experience. And yes, he was his usual, passive, "oops I'm sorry", aggressive, friendly self

I would know as I was on the end of two of his oops. Lol

Happy Saturday Fellas!! It should be another good night of racing though with this week’s lineup. I can’t wait to get out there with you guys tonight. :)

One of these nights we should do a 50 lap race with the old F1 cars and BB Raceway and make it a pit race. Shame the INDY 500 has come and gone. Could have done it that weekend.

These are this week’s Bonus Races. :)

N200 open or one make? I should be able to join tonight. I’m off tomorrow and enjoying some FiA.

Nice Choice, does you driver have a cowboy hat painted onto his helmet? :D
Oh, damn it. No. Good idea, though. I think my current helmet is the Incredible Hulk.

Is the Trans Am N200? That was the first car I liked as a kid. I love how it handles in the game. I fact, that came in the same release that the Tesla was released and I couldn't believe how much better the Trans Am was compared to the Tesla.

The Audi 3.2 TT is also a good choice for N200

Yeah. The Trans Am is N200.

Fun as always tonight. I'm seeing improvement. I'm not constantly in the back.

BTW, I do in fact, have a Z28. But for some weird reason it's under N400. ??

Great Racing tonight everyone!! That was an absolute blast! I can’t wait to rewatch that Sambabus race, I couldn’t stop laughing long enough to keep a straight line. Thanks for making it an awesome night fellas!

Did ya happen to make a replay of the Samba at SSX? How long did 1 lap take, it musta been like 5 minutes at least?

I did, I managed to remember to save all replays last night for once lol. I’m just going through them now for photos and sharing, I should be done here shortly. The Sambabus was my favourite race of the night for sure! I can’t remember the lap time though. :)
