Hi guys i wanna know what would u think about a damage system
that really effects stearing accelaraiton .....
i think it would be cool becouse the game would be more chalanging

ps dont mind my english

Ha, your not serious? KY has already stated that there will not be any damage in GT4. I would love to see it in GT5 though.

i didnt think about it in gt4 but in gt5 only sony and god knows whats going to be in it

There was damage in GT2. However, it was unrealistic, and was nothing special. Hence why it wasn't in GT3.

You'll probably be happier w/ Forza on the XBox

And GTR on the PC.

Do you want damages? Get driv3r.

Damage pisses me off, because it never does anything but make your pretty car look like crap.

damage is for people who would rather be doing something else than racing......

Exactly. And it messes up your beautiful car. :)

I think damge would be good in gt5 but i think it will depend on wether or not polyphony can develop a physics engine with the availible technology because as you know KZ wont do it half arsed although the damage in V8 supercars 2 (a.k.a dtm 2, toca2) isnt bad so maybe it is possible 💡

are you talking about damage, or wha happens when you crash? remember the videos that amar212 posted? i want to know what happens when you do crash into a wall. Are you unable to steer your car? Are you unable to accelerate for a short period of time? maybe thats what this post is all about... and if not, i would still appreciate it if my two questions are answered...

Damage IMO wouldn't be that good, I would hate to have my race ruined by someone who either doesn't know where the breaking points are and/or decided to use me as a brake. Then to top it all off I have to pay for the repairs to my car???

No, I don't like that idea one little bit.

I said it before and I'll say it again: there will never be damage in any GT.Why? Because there are too much cars in GT games to develop damage mapping for every car and also because KY simply doesn't care about it. It's not part of his philosophy of a racing sim. Period. So stop hoping for damage, the PS2 limitation is only a lame excuse.

See ya :sly:

I guess it depends on what type of damage modelling we ask for...

Damage to the visuals is one thing, damage to the physics model is anothing altogether... Agreed the fact that GT has so many cars is a reason that it will be difficult to implement, however there is no reason why a reasonably complex generic damage model overlay could not be used taking into account speed, weight, angle of contact etc. to reduce the acceleration and braking effectiveness of the car being driven.

It forces the driver to take greater care. As always, this should be an option to be able to be turned of for those arcade racers who would rather delude themselves about their driving ability and boast on these forums about their incredibly fast lap times. :) :)

All this can be developed without touching any of the visuals and ultimately give us a more realistic experience of driving at speed and all of its inherent risks. Its got to be better than the blanket 10 sec penalty at the moment.

damage... sigh. I HATE DAMAGES..
that's why i'm against forza.

or.. let's say in driver3 case, it's fun because it's fun to crash and make your car to explode.

Maybe I should come up with my own topic on this...

It's about time I look at this from a different perspective. What do NFS:HP, Midnight Club series (even with the more American MC3 coming soon to Detroit, San Diego, and Atlanta), and the NASCAR Racing series have in common? Damage to cars. Because let's face it. When you start battling hard on the track, your car is going to be ugly. It's going to be uglier than that nerdy little boy in elementary school who always gets picked on and can't get a girlfriend. Take it from me and playing "J & L Stock Car Racing" (I still hate that title. Touring cars are not "stock" cars. One day, someone will get it right). When I banged up cars from the Audi A4 to the Bentley Hunadieres in the game, cars looked ugly. So don't expect to go out on a date with a car that looks like it's the victim of a mug job a la GTA: San Andreas.

But if Kazunori Yamauchi says no damage, that's it. And think about it. Would you want to trash a priceless piece of automotive history? Remember, GT4 will feature cars from 1886 to 2004, and maybe even include cars we'll see in the future. Name me someone who wants to take a Ford Model T, a 1964.5 Ford Mustang, a 1959 Corvette, a 19?? Toyota 2000GT, or anything like that... and then want to crush them at Nurburgring Nords. or something. So that can be one big reason why damage won't happen. And how can you come up with several cars and have them all ready to be damaged? But as others said, if you want car damage, get an XBOX for Forza, or keep your PS2 and look for Burnout 3 or Enthusia Professional Racing (any word on damage for EPR?).

You also have to consider that the "damage" that other games use isn't up to snuff with KY's view of GT as being the most realistic. In most games (TOCA, NASCAR, NFS, etc), the "damage" is nothing but pre-modeled parts of the car that are swapped out mid-game to make that section "ugly". No matter how many times you hit that wall, the damage on the front end will be EXACTLY the same every time. The same dents and dings, the same cracked windshield. And the performance effects are pre-computed as well. If (car part) has (Grade 1-5) damage, the car will have xx% turning ability, or xx% horsepower.

That's not GT.

For damage to work properly in GT, it would require a major addition to the physics engine, for two reasons: The cars would have to use dynamic calculations to determine exactly what's going to break or what's going to dent, based on how, where, and how fast it was hit. Basically, rather than being a pre-modeled "damaged" car, the game engine would perform the damage on the fly, so it's different every time. And the effects on performance would have to be equally perfect. The type of damage would determine how it affects the car's performance. Hundreds of levels of damage for every last part of the car, rather than simply 1-5 (TOCA, for example, seems to have only around five levels of damage, indicated by a color on the display, red being the worst). So an impact to the front left would affect the car's steering, not because of some pre-determined programming, but because the physics engine has determined that the spring on the suspension is bent, the tire is losing air at 1.4psi/min and the axle is off by 1.6 degrees, affecting steering and turning accordingly.

And THAT is beyond the PS2 to do. That's why KY is saying that, because it's true. While "fake" damage is well within the power of the PS2, as indicated on many other games, it's not up to snuff for GT. We'll probably see it in GT6. GT5 will be the first game on PS3, so like GT3, it's not going to push the system and the programming too hard.. they'll still be learning the ropes of programming for it, which they'll have down pat come GT6. So that's probably the first time we'll see any damage in GT, and probably the first time we'll see truly realistic damage in a game.

I bet you, if Gt4 had forza style damage, you would all go nuts.

"Ohhh I don't like damage, coz it makes my pwetty car all howwible"

Stop being such a big girls blouse.

And cosmic, don't recemend driver 3 to people, it's utter trash. No one deserves that game, if you want a GOOD driver style game, buy mafia on the PC (STRESS PC).

I also love the "kaz wouldn't do blah dee blah, because it wouldn't live up to his standards", BOLLOCKS. WHAT UTTER BOLLOCKS. While it's all very nice and all, you all sucking up to him as if he's some gaming god (cough online mode), you just don't see how amazing crash damage would be. Getting your car fixed after races, the added danger element, it would make racing 10 times more fun (please, shut up about this real driving simulator crap, I play to RACE, not go on sunday drives, as far as I'm concerned, it's a racing game with alot of cars). And jedi, carmagedon 2, real time damage. YEARS ago.

Ok imagine this (I'm going into the realms of John now lol). Your driving along, 2 cars in front of you fighting for 1st and 2nd place (this would take good AI), suddenly one of em loses control, it slams in to the car next to it, and knocks it in to the wall, causing it to roll over, parts flying off. Now wouldn't it be just ABIT cool, if all the bits getting ripped off hit your car, causing dents, broken glass etc, causing damage depending on exactly where it hit, and you actually had to dodge the wreckage at high speeds, because you know, one tap and it's race over. Gt will allways feel tame and safe, as long as the cars are stuck to the ground (tip limit....), have no damage, and rubbish AI. Plus that would also open the way for a banger racing mode ;). if you can tell me that damage would add NOTHING to Gt, then you obviously enjoy watered down safe racing.

Would you want to trash a priceless piece of automotive history?

yes, I'd want to slam it in to a wall, again and again, until it EXPLODES. Then shoot it. It's a game John, so treat and talk about it as one.

Back on the ol' Playstation I used to love playing TOCA 1 & 2. They had decent damage systems and there was nothing as thrilling as winning a race after losing one of your wheels due to battling with the CPU drivers. The AI was pretty solid, if you shunted them they'd want revenge and either shunt you back or try and nudge you off at a bend etc. Bumpers and all were left strewn across the track...

Memories, sweet memories...

Anyone got TOCA Race Driver 2, and if so is it still the same?

I've only played toca RD 2 on the pc and xbox, and yeah, it's better :). Good damage too, you can flatten the front of your car at high speeds, instant car kill :)

Also on the original PS.

I used to spend many happy gaming hours seeing how much damage I could inflict on the cars in Colin McCrae Rally 1 & 2. Finding tracks with huge drops just so I could drive backwards over the edge and roll my car. Ramming trees at high speeds. Hitting jumps at an angle and flipping over. You'd end up with the bumpers off, doors swinging open every time you turned, no windscreen, the gearbox would break and the exhaust would be spluttering...

More memories, sweet memories.

edit - sounds like TOCA RD 2 might be worth a go

Damage - blah. Last on my list.

I want a propper physics model - and by "propper" I mean a model that can roll-over. Ten times. And make a two-whell ride when side-collisioned with Beetle.

Explosions are god. Nice one, Solid.

But whats the point of flipping, if you can't watch the bits being ripped off the car. Now, imagine if Gt4 had a replay director mode, with slow mo, and 100% customisable cameras etc...slow mo crashes people, with bits going everywhere :D. The Gt4 tip limit does make a mockery of the "best" car physics in a game.

How cool would it be taking a corner too fast in a stock 'lunchbox' car and rolling it? Like code says with bits flying off it would be even better, especially in the replay...

OH YES! This is why Gt4 needs damage, rolling, and robin reliants.

Forget about Ferrari etc., we need Reliant as a manufacturer in GT.
