I apologize for double post but I feel it has been long enough and I want people to be alerted that this is posted so that they read this.
I'm going to somewhat review the game.
I'll start with this: it is very fun, but I am so let down by what CodeMasters has done. They took a great concept and made a mediocre game.
For one, there's the small things. One of the things I would have expected, especially since the series seems to have run on similar engines for quite a while now, is that they haven't made dust and smoke seem realistic enough. It's so small, but you'd think it wouldn't be hard to add that. But, the games isn't rally so I suppose the lack of dust is passable for now. They have a YouTube uploading and screenshot ability as seen in the past, and I'm quite a big fan. Look me up on YouTube under this name to find some gameplay.
The damage is an absolute joke. Yes, I understand that Derby cars are reinforced, but so are multi-million dollar race cars that have been featured, and beautifully destroyed in past CodeMasters games. They said that they really worked on the damage model, well I don't buy it because it's the worst I've seen between GRiD, F1 2011, DiRT 2 and 3. They also put several cars in that have metal cages and such around them, probably so they would have to work less on damage modelling. It just isn't satisfying to push one of the cars into a wall and see a slight bend on the surrounding frame.
The Demolition modes are extremely backwards. Points... Really? You don't win a demo-derby by hitting the most cars, you win when you survive. I suppose I can see why they did this online because people would just avoid contact to win, but there are ways around this (like a contact timer that DQ's you of you don't touch another car for so long). They could have at least done it the right way for single player. The push off is fun, regardless of the stupid scoring method. My favorite destruction mode would be the one in which you have to survive several other cars targetting only you.
I have to say, they did a great job with the AI. They are challenging and during a race, they push you around but not too a frustrating and unfair degree. They find your car just fine in the demolition modes and in the Hoonigan 1V1 the other car will challenge you, unless you are better than me, which is likely.
The physics are absolute crap, but I'm busy focusing on crashing so I don't focus too much on it. But the series had physics that were arcade enough to be fine for this game. The cars always feel slow and clunky, unless you use boost which I guess was put into the game to attract 6 year olds. I can turn many corners without even the slighest bit of lifting on the pedal (trigger). If you played DiRT 3 and were good at Gymkhana, the physics here will throw you way off in Hoonigan events. Collisions are similar to past games.
The sound is alright. I've been mostly listening to music though. I really apologize if this is a big point for you, if you want I'll listen closer and give you information about it.
They got really lazy with tracks. I've seen a lot of the same locations in DiRT 3 (Smelter, Aspen, Battersea...), but the new locations are fairly interesting.
Also, they really did design some cool cars. It's a shame the damage modellers didn't do their parts.
The multiplayer is just like the last games. I quite enjoy it. From my few games I've found that my good experience with these games online is good, I don't have connection issues or annoying people driving backwards. Of course, that is nothing on the developer and is all personal experience.
As much as it appears that I hate this game, I really don't. It will probably keep me busy for a while especially if DLC is released. So I do reccomend you buy the game. Many retailers have taken a third off the price, so I reccomend picking it up.
My overall rating is a 6/10. It just isn't the quality I've come to expect from Codies. They just didn't try hard enough this time. There was no innovation here.
