Do grades matter?

That's a good idea. It kind of stinks that someone who earned a 100% has the same grade as someone who earned a 90%.

Yes, grades matter. But I'm not one to complain that a 91% is worse than a 100%: the student knows personally how well they did, it doesn't matter how the others did.

Grades are a personal score of intelligence; not necessarily ultimate rankings nor race finishes.

Well, in the work place no one really cares if you had a 4.0 in high school and/or college. But going to the trouble to earn those marks while in school will train you to do a better job in the work place.

Of course, your co-workers will hate your over-achieving attituide, but when they get fired because you're doing the work of three people you won't have to deal with them anymore. (:

To some extent it is an indicator of your ability to "regurgitate" what you have learned.
Especially in classes like History, and other "fact based" courses.
However, when it's a theory type of thing, Like "Business Psych" for instance, then I believe that it's more difficult to assess if grades mean anything.
i once walked into a Business Psych class, having forgotten that we were having a test. And forgotten to study.
Thankfully, it was all essay. And I BS'ed my way to an B+.
Had it been Multiple guess, I might have been in trouble.

When the relative that got me into the program I'm in without my having to re-take prerequisites I didn't really need asks me how it's going, it's nice being able to say something besides "fine", or "pretty good".

I'm in agreement with LM. Also, they are a motivator. Having and A makes me want to keep that A.

I believe grades matter a lot. When you apply for a job, people will look at your school records, and if you didn't do very well in school or not well at all, then the chances of you getting the job are less likely. You have to try to get the best grades you can in school and to get the most knowledge you can out of it so you can make good decisions in adulthood.

Actually, nobody looks at grades when hiring. That's a myth; it's not information for anyone to access unless they have your consent. Secondly, nobody cares if you got a 2.0 GPA or a 4.0...it's whether you have the degree/diploma in your hand, and the school can verify you actually graduated.

They matter for as long as you're in any kind of school, wherein more grades are adminstered, at least. Do they reflect your knowledge of any certain subject? Not necessarily. I get As in classes I barely know anything about and will forget all I've learned from as well as classes I enjoy and actually have use for.

Despite the latter having never actually taken place.

It depends, If you going to go to college or transfer to another university yes. If you are personally happy with your grades then it doesn't mater what you get. In math I'm happy being "average" I know I suck at it so I'm just as happy with a C as I would be with an A in any other class.

To a certain extent, yes. Can you get into a top-bracket college with a 2.0 GPA? Possibly, but it would be a lot easier with a 4.0 or higher. Can you land a great job without a degree from a top-bracket college? Very much so, but it would definitely help to have that degree from the top-bracket college.

It's a ripple effect, and so the easiest way to stay near the top is to keep up good grades (and striving for good grades is a good way to learn new skills, and especially a way to exercise your short-term memory skills and comprehension, which are invaluable in the workplace).

The only place grades matter are in school. Most of the things we learn in High School we will never use in our lives again. The only reason I try to get good grades is so I can get into a good university and get good grades there so I can get a good job. I also only get the grades to appease my parents so they don't go crazy over marks that in the end mean nothing.
Besides, grades reflect nothing of your knowledge anyways. I'm a complete history nerd, especially when it comes to WWII yet the people who got the history awards in my school probably don't even know what the battle of Kursk is...

Grades do matter for those pesky transfers.

Teachers commonly say that it doesnt matter if you get a low grade. What matters is what you learn. All in my opinion a load of bs.

Ah, that is true. But I've been unfortunate enough to meet people who were "book smart" but didn't have an ounce of "street sense".

A strong mind is a good thing to have. It's a great thing to have if you have a strong back to go with it. Consider it a "complete set."

As Sage says, grades have a ripple effect that is larger than the mere value of getting all As. Also, they are a measure as much about your organization skills as they are a measure of your knowledge, and as such they are pretty important. Good organization and learning skills (*gasp* I can't believe I just used that phrase) are important no matter what subject you end up pursuing.

grades help, but most important is attitude and effort you put in life....my freinds dad got 60's (avrage was 60%)in high school and he is a multi- millionaire now...

My school has a grading system from 00 - 99. And yes grades matter. I wish they didn't, but they do.
