all you need is either the ability to vote and kick as mentioned.... or private sessions like just about every other game has.... that way you control who can come and go
It's an online car video game, all it's going to do is turn into a crash fest. Even if 19 out of 20 people are doing it right some moron is going to come on and run into everyone. I don't think there is a online racing game I've played where people don't do this. However, if we could set up lobbies and only allow our friends in I can see this being pretty enjoyable.
Well they can still do a track day where every other car on the track appears as a ghost car, you can't hit or be blocked by them but you can see them. That would eliminate the destruction derby types from even trying.
Just watched an old episode of top gear. The Alfa one... The trackday thing was HILLARIOUS! "Porsche... Porsche... Porsche..." "Thats a negative one for me!" Boy if PD does this it will be awesome!

I've done some actual track days with my bike. If there are a bunch of Civics and Minis out on the track while your trying to dial in your Audi R8, you wouldn't be able to get a proper fast lap in because of traffic.
What about having a fast group, intermediate group and a slow group; just like in real life. Three 20 minute sessions in an hour. You can come and go as you please during your session. You can either poke around at your car or spectate while your waiting for your next session. That way you won't have to worry about crazy traffic and would reduce the chance of accidents. Track days at the "ring" are a bit different because the track is so big that traffic usually tends to spread out enough. But if you're somewhere like Tsukuba, with a full grid that ranges from 150bhp to over 600bhp, it's going to get a little nuts.
BTW, this thread's really cookin'. I'm a newly self confirmed track day addict, in real life. I think I'd be doing more online track days than anything else in the game.
And as JoeyD said, there is always going to be someone willing to spoil the fun. The ghost idea would work well, but I wouldn't want to wait to have a go each time. You would probably able to organise it as <500bhp or pre-1980's for example. Yeah you would still get traffic in a high powered car, but if you wanna set ripper times, enter a time-trial
I think non ghosted cars and whoever wants to join can join, of course, adding limits or taking away limits would be great. Maybe a Fiat 500 track day, or a Honda track day, things of that nature.
One problem i have with racing online is exactly what it is... ONLINE RACING. People are going crazy and trying to win. I just did an online match on GT5P on the Eiger and there was this guy just going FULL THROTTLE into turns and slamming into the back of me, the walls, and anything that is relatively solid!
EDIT: That online feature list is awesome! If PD pulls that off, Forza will be BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER! And I am actually really liking Forza! I just bought it yesterday, thanks to a $50 gift from my grandmother

I think its probably also worth thinking about how it would effect the leaderboard numbers.
obviously having other cars on the track would enable drafting etc.
The whole idea of a track day is to go for good lap times, and in effect go for leaderboard spots.
Ghost cars makes this easy, no collisions/drafting mean they're easily validated.
non-ghost cars could make it tricky.
But, i think its a great idea.
whilst time trails are great fun and running ghosts is good, there is nothing better then seeing a car 2 seconds ahead and giving chase.
that and the whole idea of a 'Track Day' Mode is to drop in/out of the game when ever, the games could be running 24/7 and you just drop in/out when ever you feel the need.
no waiting for races to finish etc.

If there's a chance that GT5 DLC's being released, I wonder how other players are gonna be able to see my downloaded car? For me it would be a mayor disappointment I don't see the "Benz CLK GTR Street Version" or "Maserati MC12".
it's not as hard as you think to see cars from DLCs
the game will be patched and everybody will have the new cars from these DLCs
but only people who bought it can use it
An Online Track Day would be lots of fun. Just a bunch of petrolheads driving around the track, testing car tunes and talking about cars (if voice chat is included). I hope this is in GT5. Also, because it would be non-competitive, it wouldn't have any cheats/rammers to ruin the experience.

For the record I do hope there will be the option for online trackdays, there are times when you're not up for an intense race but still want to have a competitive track session.
