Dodge Dart: DEAD?

Put it this way: Up until fairly recently I wouldn't have been seen dead in any American small car. Now, if I lived over there and this was in my budget range, I'd be very tempted.

Would have one over a Focus too, since the Ford looks like Stevie Wonder was let loose with a box of crayons.

Looks better than I thought it would.

Edit: Interior isn't that great, and Chrysler needs to hire someone else to design their steering wheels. They're always super boring.

If you think that's bad, you should see what they were putting out before. I only wish the new interiors (2011 forward in most cases) were being installed when I bought my car. Not possible to get my color in 2011, but you can see how much worse the last generation of Chrysler interiors were (Pics of my 2010 Challenger) -

I like the new Dart. There were some cool Darts in the past, but overall, it was never a glamorous car. RWD, yes, but at a time that everything was.

They ranged from this -

Can't wait to find out the details on an SRT version. :sly:

My dad had a '68, with a 340 I believe. Certainly much different from this car.

Definite traits of FIAT's design bureau influencing the car. It looks fantastic! Not boxy, or cheap looking like Dodges of past (Caliber, yuck).

First aid kit in the car? Do they expect you to injure yourself in it?

It's called accidents.

*yawn*

Oh official photos, ya these have been driving around sans camo for about a week now.

I think it looks great and I really do think it's going to be a great car. I can't wait to drive one, I just need to bug my Chrysler buddies to bring one home.

It looks pretty good overall, though a hatch would be nice. Recently the "US" manufacturers have been turning out more interesting compacts than the Japanese, at least exterior-wise.

Not a bad looking little car. Much better than focus or elantra.
My only gripe is the Neon like rake of the car.
We had a Neon as a rental a decade ago and you could not see anything but the sky out the back window. This car looks like it might have the same issue.
The wheel to rear fender ratio looks to be even worse than the camaro.

Is that red ring around the dashboard a light?

Red ring of death. :sly:

The dart doesn't look to bad, although the white one pictured looked pretty horrible IMO. The interior is pretty mediocre though...

They both have good styling though. This new one just looks too different to me for it to be called a Dart. All versions of the Dart had a several optional V8's, whereas this one doesn't even have one. :(

When I think of a modern rendition of the Dart I think of something more like this http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs30/f/2009/238/2/3/Dodge_Dart_by_dacim12.jpg

Although that looks a bit too much like the new Challenger to me, you get the idea.

The good thing is that it's still not as bad looking as many other cars out there today.

No, really I don't get the idea. Dodge needs two rear-wheel drive barnstormers...why?

Fact: The Dart started life as an economy of the times. There were optional performance versions. Another fact is that not everything has a V8 these days. This car will probably get an SRT version, at which point the modern Dart will virtually mirror the Dart family of long ago.

Looks-wise, the new Darts balances sportiness and the need for efficient packaging well enough, given that it's going to be sold on its merits and an economy car before all else. I think that if it drives ok it will do well in North America and Europe.

Don't like how the headlights and the grill are integrated though - it makes the front end looks a little pugnacious.

. Seats look comfy too.

They do look comfortable, those cushions look very soft and "mushy". In fact they remind me a bit of this, for some reason.

Which is absolutely great in a living room, not so much in a car with a "sporty" vibe to it.

Depends how well they hold you in. Getting comfy yet supportive seats in a car is something of a dark art.

If we're talking about "sporty" then leather is already a bad idea because you slide across it in hard driving, even with the best support in the world. Dart gives me a sporty/luxury vibe, so ideally it needs mildly supportive, fairly comfy seats.

Fantastic looking car, I'd say. To be honest though, I prefer the look of the white version, which I believe is a mid-trim, comfort oriented model. The R/T looks great, but I don't care much for the Charger grille. The lighter colored one looks a heck of a lot more like a Fiat, and I like that. A lot.

Nab one with the turbocharged 1.4L, a six-speed manual, and I think it would be a very clever car at a (hopefully) clever price. I'm betting it undercuts BOTH the Cruze and the Focus.

My six year old was paid very well to design that car.

Interior isn't that great, and Chrysler needs to hire someone else to design their steering wheels. They're always super boring.

Will withhold judgement until I see it in the flesh...

Why, for the same reason they needed 5 or 6 in the '60s/'70s of course!

A SRT version might make this car more interesting to me.
