Can't Believe the Transmission Dodge is putting into this thing.. Motortrend.com said it will have a 9 speed transimission.. Still only gets 40mpg. c'mon dodge

40mpg isn't that bad for a small, turbocharged engine in a relatively heavy body. Remember that transmission helps with acceleration, as well as economy. Means the ratios can be closely stacked for good acceleration, while leaving the top few ratios suitable for low-revs cruising at higher speeds.

It also allows the transmission to be programmed in a way that isn't obnoxious but still get good mileage (Using less than 75% of the throttle? Why, I think that means you want to upshift 2+ gears!).

That too. Most modern autos are smooth enough that you barely notice them changing up or down too, especially on lighter throttle loads.

I don't get why people say "OH! IT HAS TO HAVE THIS BIG FUEL-SUCKING ENGINE THAT GETS 4 MILES PER GALLON!!!".

Its a car, it's meant to get you from point A to point B.

What's the point of having such a powerful car when there are speed limits and the vehicle with the smaller engine goes the same speed (because of the speed limit)?

I think it's because of what the old Dart was. A muscle car from the 60's

The old Dart was an economy car that Dodge eventually put more powerful engines in after it had already been redesigned twice; outside of one year where they put an absolutely massive engine in it in really small numbers purely so they could homologate it for drag racing.

The Dart wasn't really a muscle car, lets be honest. It was Dodge's compact car. It's base engine had ~120hp, and throughout it's life only had two optional V8's with 300hp or more.

Ninja'd. Should have refreshed the page after having lunch.

So we can't have any fun with our cars?

I was going to pick up a Chevy Sonic next year, but I think I'm going to hold off until I can see this in full. So far, I'm liking what I see. Now, if Dodge can price it competitively, I just might be sold on this thing.

Are you assuming that a 180-odd horsepower compact won't be fun?

Considering I drive a car with 140 hp and have loads of fun in it, no. But you can't deny the awesome that is muscle cars.

I see you dont read well.... Dodge will get 40MPG without the 9spd, The car is getting Certified to get "Over 40MPG". which means it would be the most Fuel efficent car in its class without it being a "Hybrid". I see the 6sp DCT getin 40 while the 9 spd get 45.

As has been pointed out, the original Dart wasn't a muscle car, so the new one need not be either :sly: Let's be honest anyway, it's not like the US is hard-done by for muscle or pony cars at the mo. Several of the biggest have been resurrected in the last 5 years or so, and pretty well too. I'm sure the Dart can be forgiven for being a 180hp, Alfa Romeo- based compact :)

The original Dart was a Honda Civic. Eventually they started putting big engines in it.

While the car-name combo is expectedly lamented (although Hyundai's Veloster wins the award for biggest name-waster), I see where they're coming from. When I think of 'dart' I think of a precise, lightweight, small and stealthy apex-attacker, rather than a brutal, stout and burly V8 muscle car. A front-wheel drive hot-hatch would suit the name perfectly, imo.

What's up with the ridiculous ride height of cars these days? Its one thing to have ground clearance, but another to have 4" of fender gap, too.

I know right? I liked the way cars where in the '70s. The rear end of this cars body is so much higher than the front, looks stupid.

This puts a stain on the 'Dart' nameplate for me, why even call it that?
I'm going to wash my eyes with this Dart.

9 speed transmission

I'm sorry, but what? Lexus already brought in too many gears with the IS-F. And even if it is auto it'll still be too complex to work out which gear is best. And it'll be especially pointless given how slow it actually is.

When I hearst that Lexus used an 8-speed transmission, I laughed. But 9-speed? :dunce: It must be constantly changing gear...

Really, no car needs more than 7 gears, and you only need 7 if you're building something for performance (which is why so many supercars now have 7-speed boxes). And those all tend to be semi-autos...autos should be 6-speed, manuals should be 5-speed. Any lower is just old-fashioned with a few exceptions for 4-speeds (which are usually auto anyway for some reason).

All Honda Civics were Type Rs and all Buick Regals were Grand Nationals. Thus, the current cars with those nameplates are similarly terrible because the base models aren't high performance models.

If cars these days were 3 or 4 speeds, youll see the reason car companys offer 5 and 6 speeds.

Ummm.. why would you worry about which gear is best when its a Auto?. and the 9 Speed isnt about Performance, its about Fuel Efficiency. the more the RPM is in the torque range the more gas it saves.

Yall are over exxaggerating, Thiers really nothing wrong with the ride height of this car nor the fender gaps.

Heres new Renders from Allpar of the Dart.

From what these look like, The rear design sits like a Jaguar XF, pretty good for a car thats said to be a "Liftback Sedan"

Nice triple post.

I don't know why lots of people are avoiding the v4s. Turbocharged smaller engines are in the immediate future. IMO all cars should be lighter, have smaller components etc.

The Dodge logo is backwards in the pic and on the wrong side of the grill.

Nice triple post.

all he did was flip the original pic of the Dodge teaser to match the car he used to do the full render. why state the obvious?

why would anyone would make a V4?? for a FWD application at that??

I don't get people saying "it's too many gears".

1) They wouldn't give the car that many if it couldn't make use of them, and
2) Every time I've read a review of a car with a multi-speed 'box, it's just about without fail declared as excellent.

More ratios to use is more to make use of. As I said a page or two ago, it means good acceleration at low speed and a few speeds left over for economical running at higher speeds. It's pretty logical really - gears are a compromise right from the start (CVT is actually ideal, despite how much people malign it) because they don't offer the maximum torque and power to you all the time. Having more of them gives your gearbox more of a chance to get it right.

I could imagine it being a pain in the butt if they were manual (though a truck driver mate has 14 speeds in his Scania truck, and he manages okay...) but as an automatic then there's no issue at all with having 9 gears.

Indeed. The problem of excessive gear hunting has to do with crappy transmission programming, which is something that has been the bane of automatics since they became electric and has nothing to do with the amount of gears they have.

Hence why the 4-speed in a C4 Corvette will happily get into the optimal acceleration gear when you want it to, but that same 4-speed in a Buick Roadmaster will hem and haw for a second or more thinking over whether you really want to accelerate right now or if you were just joking around when you pushed the gas pedal.
