Ok simple question, if one player raced 5 perfect laps on say Laguna Seca with no driving aids and his opponent also had 5 perfect laps with aids on.
Who would be faster? or would they be the same?

depends on the drivers, aids are generally to help inexperienced racers and will slow down an experienced quick driver who uses no aids. except for skid recovery as said above.

The driver with the driving aids will be tremendously slower to the driver with out "aids". If i may ask do you yourself, drive with the aids on or off?

I'm okay with my manlihood and admit to using traction control 1, abs 1, everything else stays off. Once you're familiar with the tracks and cars, there's no need for any of the other aids.

Yup! 👍 Its better to learn gradually than to go all out. You know what i mean. Tuning cars also help reduce the need of driving aids. If you need help tuning cars ill help you out.

All the driving aids slow you down to some degree except for the Skid Recovery Force, which is basically a physics hack.

I'm just going to give this the obligatory "+1".
👍

I wouldn't call skid recovery a physics hack so much as "magic", though, much like the magic race line assist.

Based on experience, ASM tends to make your car understeer. TCS makes your car slower. So, I generally turn driving aids off.

In game they slow you down with the exception of ABS. In real life the top line racings stuff makes it easier to drive fast. In any street legal car the aids are there as safety features though and not optimised for fast driving.

This is what I was getting at Berty (If this is related to the message I sent you!) I think its important to include in your OP that we are using FGT's where I think the difference between having driver aids and not is far greater that an ordinary car, as the car is very tricky to drive quickly and can be driven so much harder with aids.

I think the best way to test this is to pick a tough circuit like Suzuka or Monaco or even Laguna, set a time with driving aids then try beat it without!

They all slow you down except for skid recovery force, which can speed you up in some cases...

I only race in rooms where it's all turned off...

The racing line assist shows you a safe and sane way to navigate the corner, but it'll very probably slow the driver down if they attempt to follow it literally. You could easily replicate it in real life with a GPS and a hud.

SRF on the other hand is an invisible finger pushing you back in line when the car begins to skid. A less charitable person might even go as far as to call it cheating

I think ABS X and Traction Control 1 are a big advantage. Traction Control won`t slow your car down that much but is a noticable difference compared to 0. Foremost you can accelerate earlier with more confidence.

Some interesting comments, it was suggested that i try and reduce the driving aids and i find that when i turn off ASM the driving experience is much better, the driving line helps you with the braking zone on tracks you dont know but i wouldnt follow it literally. Since reading these posts have now have ABS at 1 and TC at 1 also. Not sure that i want to get rid of the magic SRF though :)
GT thanks for the offer, i think im ok with tuning but have 1 question for you. I only ever change my gear ratios using the top speed slider, is there a way to help with top speed by doing them individually. (just gears im familiar with less downforce, lower, stiffer car etc.)
Cheers to all who commented

IMHO you should turn off SRF first, then start eliminating the rest. For a beginner I'd recommend:

ABS: 1
TCS: 0-??? (depending on tires, power & drivetrain. A 600HP RWD car will need it a lot more more than, say, an AWD Skyline. Actually AWD cars hardly need it at all.)
Driving Line: on (until you learn the track & brake points. I still use it on the tracks I'm not as familiar with.)

I'd also consider racing soft tires to be a pretty big "aid" on any non-race car. Racing softs eliminate the need for most other aids anyway (especially traction control.)

My experience:

Started playing Gt5 at Christmas time, all aids on, including auto trans. I could win, but basically was running a demolition derby :grumpy:

Slowly weened myself off driving assists.

Yesterday, on line, with all aids off (except ABS at 1), I was able to post consistent 1' 04 laps at Grand Valley east in my 430 Scuderia. I was racing against a couple of rather quick, clean reacers with driving wheels, who where consistently turning laps of 1' 02. And this with my trusty DS3. 👍

So, in my opinion, they driver with all aids off (except ABS 1), would be faster.

I have just done my own experiment, Fuji speedway
TC off
ABS off
SRF on
ASM off
I was 2 seconds slower than
TC 1
ABS 1
SRF on
ASM off

I prefer the car the second setting, it is more fun, i was stressed with option 1 lol

most lemans cars and things like FGT and F10 are pretty undrivable for me without tc1, but I will usually try tc0 first (can drive them but my throttle management with ds3 is rubbish lol). heavier cars that I have setup better usually need no aids except abs1.

I totally agree, you need a little help with cars like the fgt! especially with no wheel
Calum, I did, after a few bad laps i got used to it, if i had a steering wheel i would leave it off but no chance with my controller m8 :)

I would say start with TCS=5 and SRF off rather than TCS=1 and SRF on. Gradually lower TCS to 1 or off depending on the car and how you are progressing. My 2 cents...

Ya just gotta love all the posts saying all aids off Except ABS, either all aids are off or some are on.

Personally I think you should turn off SRF first. The other aids either reduce engine output or brake individual wheels to help the driver keep control of the vehicle, but SRF is totally different as it actually increases the grip of the tires when they start to slip.

Other aids depend on the remaining grip to keep the car under control just like how it works in real life but magically increasing the grip of tires is definitely unrealistic at all.

This is the most common setting online in non-SRF rooms - all aids off except ABS, racing soft tires. I've never seen a room without ABS on.

Anyway most "aids" have real-world counterparts that may or may not be allowed in real races. Except SRF which is complete fantasy.

My point was, why don't people just say "I use ABS" ? It's easier to say it that way.

Anyway there's no argument from me about SRF being a fantasy aid! The reason you'll never find a room with ABS off is coz you can't force No Aids, ABS is the only aid that can't be forced off for everyone.

GT5 is a game, meant to be enjoyed & if someone enjoys using SRF then that's their business.

Do i detect a hint of testosterone here. Is the no driver aid thing a badge of honour?
The original question was to find out if the various aids slowed your car down and it has been answered. Cheers.
