OK good.
When someone has to explain something on a PM as opposed to directly on the forums, yeah you get where I'm coming from.
If it's all good, then it's all good. :)

I don't know whats going on. I guess I missed something. But I need more reviews so we can give this wheel away. Come on guys stay on topic. I am pushing the giveaway back a couple weeks. I need five more good reviews.

Kai....

While searching for more information to back up my review i stopped off at Wikipedia, heres what it had to say about Gran Turismo...

Gran Turismo (Italian for "Grand Tourer" or "Grand Touring", often abbreviated to GT) is a very popular and critically acclaimed series of racing simulation video games produced for the Sony PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable gaming systems.

Very popular and critically acclaimed

Since the first game in the series, Gran Turismo, released for the Playstation here in the UK back in 1998 I have been hooked, the critics deemed the game a major success, praising its graphics and content, awarding it high scores all round, earning the game its rightful place as the best selling game on our beloved little beige box! And, in my eyes, still one of the best intros ever! Could a racing sim get any better than this?

Well, with the release of the second instalment I couldn't wait to see what Polyphony Digital had done, news of more tracks, more cars, new features! this was going to be so much better than the original Gran Turismo? Wrong! yes the game boasted a huge wealth of cars, 650+ which even by today's standard is an incredible achievement, plenty of tracks and new features which helped to advance the game from its successful predecessor, 2 discs and again heaps of praise from critics, again awarding the game with high scores. But for me... something was lacking! I didn't really get into this instalment and found myself still playing the original. I thought the graphics didn't really advance enough, the game play hadn't really improved and overall i thought the game was actually just... bigger! Not better!

Then came news of the Playstation 2! With its new black styling, increased graphics power, the highly discussed emotion engine, and... news of the next generation Gran Turismo! Step forward, or more roll to the grid! Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec.

The first time i loaded Gran Turismo 3 on my Playstation 2, i was completely blown away. I already knew the graphical power of my Playstation 2 but never did I imagine Gran Turismo 3 would look so beautiful. Reflections, lighting effects, fantastic looking car models and a better sense of speed! The cars were now 10 times better looking than those in Gran Turismo 2 and that more than made up for the smaller collection. The tracks were incredible, also more detailed then the previous versions although again, less to choose from than GT2. Gran Turismo was well and truly back on my list of favourite games and this instalment certainly got some hammer! The critics again praised this instalment of the Gran Turismo series, high scores all round, awards and records broken! Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec remains the highest selling instalment in the series, one of the best selling games on the Playstation 2 and often gets listed in top 100 lists of all time greatest games.

Next up came Gran Turismo 4, still on the Playstation 2 console. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the next instalment in the series, the Playstation 2 was starting to age, rumours of another Playstation were starting to float about, would another Gran Turismo be any good? Would this be another Gran Turismo 2? Quantity over Quality?

Gran Turismo 4 much to my surprise was incredible! The game took a step forward in graphics, game play and content. Following in the trend of Gran Turismo 2, there were lots of cars... lots! 700+ from 80 different manufacturers from around the world. The game featured 51 tracks with real world locations and old favourites. And, the thing that earned Gran Turismo 4 alot of its praise from hardcore fans, the amount of races! This was a big game! The game again, as with all its predecessors took heaps of praise, high scores, awards and became the second highest selling instalment in the series, behind Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec.

Although GT4 had all this praise, there was a few problems, trends that have plagued Polyphony Digital in the release of Gran Turismo 5. Gran Turismo 4 was delayed for over a year and a half by Polyphony Digital, it had its much hoped for online features removed only to be later released as a Test feature on a limited basis. The game was criticised for its continued lack of damage modelling, available short cuts with lack of penalty's and most of all the not so good AI system.

Are these all really problems or are we expecting too much from game developers now as they strive for more realism! Can the GT series really move forward and give the fans and critics what they want? Will the next generation instalment really be The Real Driving Simulator?

With the announcement of the Playstation 3, Sony showed tech demos of Vision Gran Turismo which would later become Gran Turismo 5. These tech demos showed better car models and more cars on track! Little did we know that we would not get to play Gran Turismo 5 for nearly another 4 years!

In the meantime to keep fans happy, Polyphony Digital released Gran Turimo 5 Prologue, a cut down version of what we could expect from the full blown game to be released later... much later! Being very impatient I imported my copy from Japan, I cant read Japanese but i struggled on with the install, the download... oh the download! The much criticised download that took many gamers hours to download and install after many attempts. Annoying at the time but for me was oh so worth it! The graphics on Prologue were incredible, almost real like at certain angles. Prologue only offered 6 tracks, plus reversed alternatives) but they looked stunning on the Playstation 3, especially London. When first released the game only offered 37 cars, later, through updates this reached 76 with the inclusion of the GT by Citroen and Ferrari's F1 car!

With Prologue came the inclusion of many features fans and critics had called for including, better AI (although still not great), online play (wasn't perfect, but it was a start), Penalty systems for ramming and cutting corners (worked but was frustrating as hell) and more cars on track. The game ran at 60fps during game play and 30fps during replays. All looked absolutely stunning! Prologue also introduced a new menu interface, new garage system and GT-TV, an online area for downloading videos of various racing featurette's and behind the scenes footage. GT-TV also signalled the link up with the UK TV programme, Top Gear, bringing downloadable episodes and the news the Top Gear Test Track would later be included in Gran Turismo 5. This news set the internet forums abuzz with the idea of being able to take high-powered sports cars to the track to either race the Stig or beat his times. As we all know this feature hasn't really lived up to the hype!

Prologued certainly whet my appetite for the full release of Gran Turismo 5!

After months even years of much criticised delays Sony and Polyphony Digital finally released Gran Turismo 5 here in the UK in November 2010! Roughly 4 years after it was first announced! This brings us back to...

Very popular and critically acclaimed

Yes, Gran Turismo as a series has remained very popular, sales have been incredible over the series and the games have definitely helped Sony sell Playstation consoles. Gran Turismo has racked up a huge fanbase of hard core gamers and critics, earned numerous awards and records and remains one of the highest selling series of all time! But is that enough to keep Gran Turismo 5 at the top, ahead of increased pressure from new series like Forza Motorsport, Shift and Race Driver Grid? All games that are growing ever popular, pushing the boundaries of realism. They have great graphics as expected on next gen consoles, damage modelling, realistic handling, better AI and like GT, real world cars and tracks!

The one thing they don't have is history... but will that be enough?

The constant delays to the latest instalment and the exclusion of various features have led to alot of criticism since the much applauded release of Gran Turismo 5. Many have felt the game has been released unfinished, rushed out the door to held holiday season sales, my view is that many are probably right!

On loading Gran Turismo 5, we are greeted with a mammoth install! This didn't really bother me as I understand the reasoning behind this, and knew it would improve load times in the within the game. However, this at first wasn't the case! Due to the network features of the game i found myself along with many others highly frustrated with the length of time the game was taking to move from menu to menu. Fortunately Polyphony Digital, rectified this with an update a few days after purchase, great start for the developers, showing they do care after sale and giving me confidence that they will support this game. Many others though began to speculate on this being the start of many updates to fix many problems within the game, was it really released too early?

The first few issues aside, once loaded you are greeted with a few setup options, driver suit etc. On the main menu for Gran Turismo you have the options to go to A-Spec, B-Spec, Special Events, Licenses, Car Dealer, Used Car Dealer, GT Auto, Practice, Photomode and Online features. On the right hand side you have settings options etc. and access to your Profile, Garage, Items and Photos. The menu is a change from the original world map style menu but I like it, some have criticised it but I find it simple and easy to navigate. The menus has since been updated to incorporate the Online UCD and Seasonal events.

The graphics in GT5 have not really improved much since the release of Prologue, in fact in some areas they have actually got worse! Shadows and dust/smoke effects tend to be blocky in places although this does not take anything away from the game. I find that while racing I don't really notice this blocking. The cars look great when using Premium models. Standard models are still well modelled but some tend to look abit out of place against the higher detailed Premium cars. On the plus side, there is 800+ to choose from, even if a huge portion are various models of the same car, i.e. Mazda Miata, Nissan Skyline etc. There are around 200 Premium models, all of which look stunning with crazy amounts of detailing on exterior, interior and engine bays (on the cars with visible engines). GT5 has 71 different tracks over 26 locations, all the old favourites from the GT series are included, Deep Forest, Grand Valley as well as real racing circuits such as Nurbrugring and Suzuka. There are also some real world locations such as London, Rome and Madrid. All the tracks look great as expected although some like the London and Madrid circuit are prone to tearing occasionally, again this doesn't really bother me that much.

A-Spec offers plenty of races based over differing levels of difficulty as in previous instalments although again many have criticised that there isn't enough to play through, based on the amount of races in Gran Turismo 4. Playing through the races, as in previous GT Games, earns you credits, new cars and XP. XP helps you level up and progress through the game, unlocking new challenges and races. XP levels also impact on what cars you can buy from the Car Dealer!

B-Spec, first introduced in basic form in Gran Turismo 4, is a manager mode like feature allowing you to raise a driver through a career. B-Spec is pretty much a parallel to A-Spec only with an AI driver. Again you earn credits and XP, win new cars and unlock other races. The controls in B-Spec are quite limited to, Slow down, speed up and over take functions. A later update has added a remote version of B-Spec so you can control the game through a browser on your PC.

Special Events are quite similar to the events in Gran Turismo 4. They inlcude challenges from Go-Karting to NASCARR to Rally, with challenges varying from races to overtaking challenges, time trials and corner control. As with the races in A-spec and B-spec you are awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze trophies for your result along with credits, XP, cars or Photomode locations based on your result. Although completing these Special Events don't really add anything to your A-Spec career, they do add a bit of variety to the game and were actually quite fun and challenging.

The Licenses are pretty much the same as they always have been throughout the Gran Turismo series, cornering, overtaking, braking etc. However they have no impact on A-Spec at all any more! I am really unsure why Polyphony Digital have made them this way as they seem to have no purpose any more other than to win some cash and a car or two.

GT Auto is back, here you can clean your car, change oil, paint the body of the car or the rims, change the rims, add aero parts and do an engine rebuild or repair body damage/rigidity.

Practice mode is what it says. Good place to test your cars out or just have a bit of fun on the tracks. You can choose from free run, race or drift challenge.

Photomode, first introduced on Gran Turismo 4 is actually a really cool feature, I find it very addictive, especially since joining this forum and entering Photomode competitions. You basically choose you car, take it to one of the many locations, position your car and yourself then snap away! The camera options are really good, featuring most of the modes you would use on a normal digital camera, exposure, focal points, F-number, shutter speed along with different filters for added effects. The pictures taken can be then exported to the XMB and a USB pen for uploading to your PC or internet.

The Car Dealer is where you will find all the Premium cars. Used Car Dealer is where you will find used cars, standard models. The UCD stock rotates after each race so its always best to keep checking it for the rarer cars in the game.

There is also the GT Tune shop where you can add, suspension packages, exhausts, turbo's etc. just as you could in the other GT games.

Racing in Gran Turismo 5 is very good, the AI has certainly improved over past GT games although I feel this could still be improved some more. The majority of races feature 12 cars on track at once with no real graphic issues (shadows aside). Difficulty is about where it always has been, you can still over tune your car and blow the competition away or keep the tuning to a minimum to gives yourself abit more of a challenge. Performance points have recently been re-introduced to combat that issue with the online racing, although this is only an option!

Damage modelling has been a much called for feature in the Gran Turismo series. Polyphony showed us many videos before the games release that got some excited at the prospect of smashing Ferrari's and Lamborghinis up! But left others feeling like the modelling would be disappointing. I for one when I first got the game had a go at smashing a car up only to find it would receive a few minor dents that didn't look very realistic. Speculation was that damage became unlocked as you levelled up throughout the game. I have seen no evidence of this as yet. I have however, seen that certain cars tend to damage more than others! The rally cars, Premium Subaru, Suzuki have really good damage modelling with spoilers, body kits hanging off, boots and bonnets flying open to reveal the engines etc. Doors opening and eventually falling off! Smashing them up was fun but at the end of the day, that is not what Gran Turismo is about! A later update introduced, mechanical damage... I am unsure of the level of damage that can be done but i have found that slight knocks do tend to cause your car to steer to one side! The only downside to this is that its limited to practice modes and online! When will it be available in A-Spec? Your guess is as good as mine!

Online racing so far has been a good experience for me, Prologue was ok but had plenty faults, jumping cars etc. that kept me from playing online that often. So far i have only played with friends but online but have done plenty of races to know that the online side is functioning to a satisfactory level for me. The introduction of Performance Points has been a welcome addition and made for some really good online races, abit more of a challenge with the right people. Winning credits and XP is also a bonus! The rooms load quickly and I haven't noticed any buggy jumping or ghosting as yet with plenty users online, voice chat and long races.

On a whole, with the few bugs aside at the start, I am very happy with Gran Turismo 5. The support from Polyphony Digital so far has been excellent, out shining most developers to date for after sale support! I understand this cannot go on forever and eventually feel that paid for DLC will arrive, but i for one will welcome this as more Cars, Tracks and Game modes can only be a good thing. There are still some bugs to iron out like the graphical glitches but as stated they don't really take anything away from the game play for me and I believe those that complain about it are just being picky! I have really enjoyed the seasonal events so far, great for earning extra cash to buy the more desired cars and earning extra XP to help you level up. More of these please Polyphony! Keep up the good work, creating us a fine racing sim.

My Score 8.5/10 If A-Spec was a little longer I would have probably awarded GT5 a 9!

Haha sorry for the stupidly long review, i got abit carried away, rambling on!

im not really one for giving reviews but as there may be a dfgt going i thought i'd give my 2$

nothing beats watching e3 conference streamed live waiting to get a glimpse at another unseen trailer of gt5 and after listening to it for an hour or 2 they showed the trailer. i was like a kid on christmas, that was told they were going to disney land, all rolled in to one, then the release date pops up, i threw the laptop to the side and rang my friend who is also a big gt fan and told him the news.

once i got the game i was blown away, yes there was some draw backs and glitches but i thought the game was so good nothing could get in the way of me seeing that. because im dont have the option of spending hours on end playing the game for the first few weeks i was going from doing a licence to a special event to a championship in aspec, it just seemed like i had so much to do i couldnt choose or spend too long at one thing. a few months on im at 92% complete and i a still stick gt5 on for 30 mins and cant decide what to do, im hooked on photo mode, special events, even watching remote racing i enjoy. my girlfriend thinks i have a problem ;) but this game is everything and more that i expected from checking gtplanets news page every day for a year or 2 just to see leaked/released news on the upcoming title. if i was to complain it would be about the jaggies smoke causes and shadows but i still give the game 10/10

heres hoping for more updates that keep me busy

heres my first attempt :nervous:

1994 it was historic year, the United Kingdom became linked to the rest of Europe, the channel tunnel was official opened. Run Forest Run became engrained into the minds of millions of people as Tom Hanks brings alive one of the most entertaining stories in modern history of movie. Nelson Mandela completes an amazing comeback story and is elected president of South Africa. The IRA announce a cease fire in Northern Ireland… and so on, 1994 was truly a great year. It was also a great year for the world of electronic gaming, Sony unleashed the PlayStation unto the world and has never looked back, spawning classic games and pushing boundaries of what was perceived possible.

However, although racing games existed, they existed as speed freaks, it wasn’t until 3 years later, did the world come to know, what is now known, as the best racing series of all time, the Gran Turismo series, even it the early days, it was set apart from rest, pushing for massive selection or cars and tracks, realism, it strived for perfection. 13 years passed, 4 (full version) games in total on the PlayStation 1 and 2 had been released. A splattering of smaller spin off games had been released. But the world has been waiting, children, adults, teachers, actresses, waiting patiently to sit behind the wheel of a car they could never own, on a track they may never have the chance to visit, and pit their skills against the worlds best.

So there it was, after a wait that seemed longer than it needed to be, November 24th 2010, Gran Turismo was launched for the PlayStation 3. The most powerful gaming console available with a game that strived for absolute perfection was available, quickly becoming the best selling game of all time on the PS3, the racing community of the world rejoiced, or did they?
The game was released in many editions, your standard package, pre-order specials, signature edition, etc. All had different values on sale and provided you with extra items depending on what version beyond the standard package you got. However the biggest portion of the game broke down as the following.

1031 Cars from a wide range of manufacturers, including but not limited too Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Honda.

71 different tracks, however there are only25 unique locations offering differing variations of how they are run to make the figure upto 71.

4 main racing modes. A-Spec, the now famous ‘career’ mode of GT Series. Arcade Mode. B-Spec mode, a chance to manage drivers and instruct them on tactics during a race, identical to A-Spec, you create a driver, and he drives your cars. And the highly anticipated Online Racing mode.

Many more other features which are included in this game, which I will touch on but I would end up increasing the thread size to 3000 pages!

So, how does the game play? After what seems like as long as the development period, the game will finally install and update. From here you can access GT Mode and Arcade Mode. Probably if you are a fan of the GT series, and let’s be honest, who isn’t? You will be rushing into GT Mode. And when you do this is when you stumble on the first clumsy aspect of this game. The GT Mode interface, it’s big, clear, bright, and colorful. You can get everywhere you need to go. But after a few minutes of navigating this aspect of the game, you soon feel like you are waiting too long, wondering why you have to leave certain sections to access other sections, this going back and forth, and waiting, is no game breaker, not in the slightest, but I suspect a bit more forethought in this area could have been applied to make it smoother/faster, if not more interactive between sections. For example, cars when driven for a while need oil changes. To change the oil of a car, if you are on the top GT Mode menu, you have to select the GT auto shop, and then choose Oil Change, and then Select to do the Oil change, then watch them change the oil, then you have to exit this menu, then exit again to get back to GT Menu. Now this is from the main menu. If you are buried in another menu, you have to go back from that menu to the main menu to begin this journey. A simple option in the Car Garage menu would be far more usable.

From this main menu, you can access, A Spec, B Spec, Online Races, Your Profile, New Car Dealership, Used Car Dealership, Tuning Shop, Practice, Photo mode, Options, Seasonal Events, Online Dealership, Licenses and Special Events. Also from here you can access you car garage, however this option is almost available in every other menu.

There is a ton, and some more, cars. So many cars, you won’t know which car to choose. As always with GT series, you win cars by winning different races through A-Spec and Licenses. However, you can now win cars from doing B-Spec and Special Events. Cars are split into two sections, Premium and Standard models. Premium model cars have been fully modeled down too the last detail, standard model cars are cars which have not had the full treatment. Approx. 221 of all cars in the game are considered Premium, not all are must drive cars in your typical sense. However, once again, this great difference in the premium number of cars vs the number of standard cars has upset some. However I feel, do they have a right to feel aggrieved. Lets take the premium out of the picture and lets look at the standard models, how do they look on screen? Good, some are excellent in fact, some could do with some touching up, however that’s over 800 different modeled cars in the game. The problem here is the premium cars are just so incredibly detailed and look so good you feel like you could reach out and touch them and it would feel like Katy Perry . In fact with a premium car, in photo mode, you can zoom into tail lights and see the molded manufacturer name in the plastic light is just mind blowing. But I wonder, did it need that much detail, I mean its amazing, but when am I ever going to see that name in the game, you have to zoom in to see it, how much time was used to make such fine detail that I can clearly see stitching in seats and dashboards ? Would I have sacrificed that for a few extra premiums? I think so. Premium is very much premium. Car choices are ranging from a Go-Kart to the much publicized (and often maligned) Redbull X2010 Concept car. In between we have family carriers, trucks, super cars, sedans, Le Man Race Cars, Ferrari F1 cars, Nascar, Old muscle, Old European, Classic race cars. There is such a wide range here it would be impossible for someone to buy this game and not find one of their fantasy cars in here. Every car feels unique to drive as well, with so many options in tuning and set up it is possible to set any car up to feel the way you prefer. The choice of cars is truly a big tick in the yes column for gamer satisfaction.

As for scoring or rating GT5, I don’t think it’s required. You know what to expect, it’s a racing game, it has a ton of cars, a large selection of tracks, and many different modes to play them in. Do you like cars? Do you like Racing? Then GT5 is a must; you cannot be a serious race gamer without this game.

Are there issues with the game ? Yes of course, show me a game without an issue and I will show you tic tac toe. However PD have shown continued support and its looking like they will see this through to a completed perfect product. The issues are not game changing, or game breakers, they are just magnified by the brilliance that GT5 is. Stick a black stone in a bowl of white stones, it will always stick out.

What do you want reviews for and why are you asking for gift cars? This is weird...

Read the OP dude.
Cliff notes: the top ten reviews get selected. Those 10 gift a car as an "entrance fee". From there is a race on the Nordschleife at night. The winner gets selected from there by Kai. The winner isn't necessarily the first to cross the start/finish.

Well yeah. But why do they want these reviews? What are they for? That's just weird. And honestly when I saw the gift cars thing the first thing that popped into my head is "this is BS".

It smells funny, and it's weird. Just saying. Good luck to those participating.

A few of you guys on the forums read my post about picking up 12 DFGT wheels. They were on sale at Sam's Club for 40 bucks last year. So I picked up everyone I could find. I even gave away a couple on Sony's GT forum.

I would like to do the same on GTPlanet.
So many of you have asked if I could sell one. I have a better idea. I am going to give one away. I have not figured out all the details. But I want to do it. Gt needs a wheel.

So send me suggestions for a contest guys. Also I am having trouble getting good races online. My psn id is Kai_OS. Send request guys. I am currently level 25. I love to race stock cars. I mean tunes are great but I love to see how stock cars match up vs one another. I race Nurburg a lot. I will be updating this thread often. The official contest will be on this tread

Ok so here are the contest details. I have liked a few of the communities suggestions. So here goes.

Post a review of Gran Turismo 5 in this thread. There are no guidelines for the review. I will choose 10 of my favorites after reading through them all. The 10 finalist will all be assigned a car to gift to yours truly. Keep about a million credits available. Soemone posted this in the thread today. I love the idea. The top ten will also participate in a event in my Lounge. This event will be a 3 lap night time race on Nurburgring. I mean pitch black. The winner will be determined at the end of the race. The winner of the race will not necessarily be the winner of the contest. I will draw names at the end irst week throf the race. I will also be spectating the event. My camera will be rolling. I will leave this event open to everyone. Once again shipping is on me

The race is like a ceremony. A celebration of GT and cars. Good luck to everyone. Contest ends February 28, 2011. The race ceremony will be the following weekend. I will notify the 10 finalist a week prior to the ceremonial race. Remember I will assign all finalist a car to gift to yours truly. Gift must be recieved by Feb 28, 2011. I am going to start choosing finalist this weekend. I will notify all finalist via PM. I have also decided to give away a second DFGT wheel after this contest ends. I will post details this evening in this thread. Check back often.

Hope she announces the results soon of the 10 drivers in.

Last post over a week ago, let's get some more reviews in people. Will you be sending our cars back if this giveaway falls through? Just asking.

She's been pretty busy recently with work from what I've heard from her. I'll remind her about the contest later today.

Well I shot her a message earlier today via e-mail. I mentioned the DFGT giveaway so I'll see what she says to me in return. Apparently I have to send her a 370Z:dopey:. Guess I forgot that I was supposed to give her one.
