I'll give this a go.
Apokalipse's GT5 review
The hype surrounding this game was unbelievable... It was only a couple of weeks ago, but it was overwhelming... but this is the present and we've all had some time now to absorb all the different aspects of the game, including me!
So lets get started with the most important aspect of racing simulation games.
The graphics? Oh yeah the standards are so ba...
NO
The premiums vs. standards thing? Yeah that decision was a bad one by...
NO
Bad AI?
well kind of, but more on that later
The physics? Yeah those are awesome...
YES
With all these threads about this being wrong and that being wrong I get the feeling that people forget what Polyphony Digital have been saying they have been concentrating on.
When I joined GTPlanet about a year or so ago there was talk about an awesome new physics engine.
And my god it wasn't all talk! The physics are so much better. When I first played GT5 I was impressed- you can imagine, since my other Gran Turismo game is GT4. That's right I went from GT4 to GT5 and it was like taking a huge leap forward. The new physics pose a daunting task but help make the game so much more fun. I was surprised, when I was enjoying the Vitz race... such a race if it were in GT4 would be incredibly boring and just a task for me. But I must say I enjoyed it because the physics feel so fresh, new and right. I'm sure anyone who played the game agrees with me.
So lets go talk about the other things I was so quick to dismiss earlier.
The graphics
First off let me tell you I have a standard definition television. So the difference between standard and premium is probably less noticeable. Still the game looks so highly polished even on my 10 year old TV. The beautiful reflections, the highly detailed cars, etc. etc.
With such a high standard set from the start you then notice the shadown... God they aren't nice... at all
But with that said you don't notice it during the race unless you're using cockpit view. The main reason I have against the shadows being the way they are is the fact, that they look so out of place. It's not enough to make me not enjoy the game, but it's the worst thing I can notice in the game every time I play... and it's not even that bad.
Premiums vs. Standards
Like I mentioned before the majority of the time spent was on the physics engine (or so I think). Making a game for a new system isn't quite the easy task and Polyphony had their work cut out for them, so it's quite understandable they only gave us 200 premiums, GT5 is special in itself, since it has more cars on a new system (PS3) than the previous game on the previous system.
700 GT4 cars vs. 1000 GT5 cars
I respect Polyphony for that. They could easily have never even mentioned standards and only given us the 200 premiums and people would be disappointed yes, but I believe it would not have such an effect as giving us standards has.
The online racing
I find it immensely fun. I could easily play it many hours straight and not get bored. It's this additional option that the online play gives us. You can play a-spec and the special events, even do a b-spec race from time to time. But what gave me the most fun and frustration-less time was going to the GTP chat and going to a private lobby.
Now that is awesome! No worries about bad AI or even winning the race. This is where the real fun is to be had. You can even just cruise around and not race at all... it's an experience not to be missed... I'm sure the people that played GT5p or Forza3 know this already, but that's my opinion of it.
The AI
It's not the best. Even though we all had our fingers crossed it's not perfect. I have heard people say that the cars firmly stick to their set path and other things like that. Well okay, but people said that for GT4? Are you saying there hasn't been any improvement? There has of course! The AI is much better at overtaking and it doesn't slam into your rear (as much). However the AI has somehow learned the PIT maneuvre. That's bad... But I only noticed it in the special events.
The music
I'll keep it brief.
I absolutely love the menu music. I don't even like jazz either...
The race music is that noise in the background that bugs you... turn it off
Overall
I love the game. It doesn't seem like an unfinished game at all (like others have been saying). The game does what it does best in that it lets you drive a car and actually make you feel like you're driving a car at the same time! All the other things graphics, standards etc. etc. That's like the extra toy you get in your cereal box. But we cannot ignore the fact, that sometimes the extra toy in other racing games is a tad better. so this is why it gets a 7/10 from me and it could even be improved with patches!
The physics get a 10/10 though! Great job from Polyphony!
And I know I probably miss-placed a whole lot of commas... Sorry about that.
