heres my first attempt :nervous:

--

1994 it was historic year, the United Kingdom became linked to the rest of Europe, the channel tunnel was official opened. Run Forest Run became engrained into the minds of millions of people as Tom Hanks brings alive one of the most entertaining stories in modern history of movie. Nelson Mandela completes an amazing comeback story and is elected president of South Africa. The IRA announce a cease fire in Northern Ireland… and so on, 1994 was truly a great year. It was also a great year for the world of electronic gaming, Sony unleashed the PlayStation unto the world and has never looked back, spawning classic games and pushing boundaries of what was perceived possible.

However, although racing games existed, they existed as speed freaks, it wasn’t until 3 years later, did the world come to know, what is now known, as the best racing series of all time, the Gran Turismo series, even it the early days, it was set apart from rest, pushing for massive selection or cars and tracks, realism, it strived for perfection. 13 years passed, 4 (full version) games in total on the PlayStation 1 and 2 had been released. A splattering of smaller spin off games had been released. But the world has been waiting, children, adults, teachers, actresses, waiting patiently to sit behind the wheel of a car they could never own, on a track they may never have the chance to visit, and pit their skills against the worlds best.

So there it was, after a wait that seemed longer than it needed to be, November 24th 2010, Gran Turismo was launched for the PlayStation 3. The most powerful gaming console available with a game that strived for absolute perfection was available, quickly becoming the best selling game of all time on the PS3, the racing community of the world rejoiced, or did they?
The game was released in many editions, your standard package, pre-order specials, signature edition, etc. All had different values on sale and provided you with extra items depending on what version beyond the standard package you got. However the biggest portion of the game broke down as the following.

1031 Cars from a wide range of manufacturers, including but not limited too Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Honda.

71 different tracks, however there are only25 unique locations offering differing variations of how they are run to make the figure upto 71.

4 main racing modes. A-Spec, the now famous ‘career’ mode of GT Series. Arcade Mode. B-Spec mode, a chance to manage drivers and instruct them on tactics during a race, identical to A-Spec, you create a driver, and he drives your cars. And the highly anticipated Online Racing mode.

Many more other features which are included in this game, which I will touch on but I would end up increasing the thread size to 3000 pages!

So, how does the game play? After what seems like as long as the development period, the game will finally install and update. From here you can access GT Mode and Arcade Mode. Probably if you are a fan of the GT series, and let’s be honest, who isn’t? You will be rushing into GT Mode. And when you do this is when you stumble on the first clumsy aspect of this game. The GT Mode interface, it’s big, clear, bright, and colorful. You can get everywhere you need to go. But after a few minutes of navigating this aspect of the game, you soon feel like you are waiting too long, wondering why you have to leave certain sections to access other sections, this going back and forth, and waiting, is no game breaker, not in the slightest, but I suspect a bit more forethought in this area could have been applied to make it smoother/faster, if not more interactive between sections. For example, cars when driven for a while need oil changes. To change the oil of a car, if you are on the top GT Mode menu, you have to select the GT auto shop, and then choose Oil Change, and then Select to do the Oil change, then watch them change the oil, then you have to exit this menu, then exit again to get back to GT Menu. Now this is from the main menu. If you are buried in another menu, you have to go back from that menu to the main menu to begin this journey. A simple option in the Car Garage menu would be far more usable.

From this main menu, you can access, A Spec, B Spec, Online Races, Your Profile, New Car Dealership, Used Car Dealership, Tuning Shop, Practice, Photo mode, Options, Seasonal Events, Online Dealership, Licenses and Special Events. Also from here you can access you car garage, however this option is almost available in every other menu.

There is a ton, and some more, cars. So many cars, you won’t know which car to choose. As always with GT series, you win cars by winning different races through A-Spec and Licenses. However, you can now win cars from doing B-Spec and Special Events. Cars are split into two sections, Premium and Standard models. Premium model cars have been fully modeled down too the last detail, standard model cars are cars which have not had the full treatment. Approx. 221 of all cars in the game are considered Premium, not all are must drive cars in your typical sense. However, once again, this great difference in the premium number of cars vs the number of standard cars has upset some. However I feel, do they have a right to feel aggrieved. Lets take the premium out of the picture and lets look at the standard models, how do they look on screen? Good, some are excellent in fact, some could do with some touching up, however that’s over 800 different modeled cars in the game. The problem here is the premium cars are just so incredibly detailed and look so good you feel like you could reach out and touch them and it would feel like Katy Perry . In fact with a premium car, in photo mode, you can zoom into tail lights and see the molded manufacturer name in the plastic light is just mind blowing. But I wonder, did it need that much detail, I mean its amazing, but when am I ever going to see that name in the game, you have to zoom in to see it, how much time was used to make such fine detail that I can clearly see stitching in seats and dashboards ? Would I have sacrificed that for a few extra premiums? I think so. Premium is very much premium. Car choices are ranging from a Go-Kart to the much publicized (and often maligned) Redbull X2010 Concept car. In between we have family carriers, trucks, super cars, sedans, Le Man Race Cars, Ferrari F1 cars, Nascar, Old muscle, Old European, Classic race cars. There is such a wide range here it would be impossible for someone to buy this game and not find one of their fantasy cars in here. Every car feels unique to drive as well, with so many options in tuning and set up it is possible to set any car up to feel the way you prefer. The choice of cars is truly a big tick in the yes column for gamer satisfaction.

As for scoring or rating GT5, I don’t think it’s required. You know what to expect, it’s a racing game, it has a ton of cars, a large selection of tracks, and many different modes to play them in. Do you like cars? Do you like Racing? Then GT5 is a must; you cannot be a serious race gamer without this game.

Are there issues with the game ? Yes of course, show me a game without an issue and I will show you tic tac toe. However PD have shown continued support and its looking like they will see this through to a completed perfect product. The issues are not game changing, or game breakers, they are just magnified by the brilliance that GT5 is. Stick a black stone in a bowl of white stones, it will always stick out.

Thx for the review necrodeemus. You have been chosen as a finalist for the DFGT wheel giveaway! Your gift car is a ZR-1 2010!

GT5 is the culmination of many years of dedicated passion for all things automotive - and it shows. Not only are we treated to a fantastic rendition of simulated driving/racing/car-collecting, but we are exposed to the beauty and history of this beloved vehicle via GTtv and the GT Museum.

GT5 is not perfect, but neither is love. I love my GT5.

wavetool you are a finalist my friend. Your gift car is C '63 AMG '08

Your ability is an obvious point in gran turismo considering whether you can actually complete the task successfully. There is no point in saying that the 2004 German Formula One Champion Michael Schumacher can go through church at speed in excess of 180mph if you simply do not possess sufficient skill to do the same thing. However, gran turismo might strive you towards a goal approximating to it, yet within the realms of achievability for yourself. As you develop as a racer in the game, who knows where your goal for this corner might take you?

Kai,

That's so very cool of you! You are RAD!

I don't think I'll be able to participate in the April 1st race, though. I'm in Houston visiting family until the 4th and my PS3 is in Chicago... :'(

GL, everyone!

Gran Turismo 5

Anticipation: 5/10
On one hand, I couldn't wait for GT5, and was supremely disappointed every time it was delayed. On the other hand, every time I thought about GT5, I had to play some GT4 to satisfy the urge, which was very enjoyable, of course.

Packaging: 9/10
I picked up my pre-ordered Collector's Edition on my way out of town to go to my parents' house for Thanksgiving. Since I would be there without my PS3, I had to rely on the Apex book to hold me over for a couple days. It didn't disappoint! It only falls short of a 10/10 rating because flipping through the whole book only to find that my own car wasn't in the game was a bit of a bummer. But boy, was I ready to play!

Cars: 9/10
I can't give it a full 10/10 when there are myriad Skylines and Imprezas and Lancers, but some other very great cars are left out. Where's my VW Mk5 R32? Benz SL65 AMG Black Series? How about a base Corvette? And where oh where are the Porsches? C'mon PD, please get this worked out! Good thing I have 1000+ beautiful cars to hold me over! It only took a few minutes for the Alfa 8C, '69 Camaro Z28 and the Aston DB9 to get me completely hooked on this game!

Tuning/Customization: 8/10
The typically great tuning ability is back, and it will continue to fuel my delusions of being an expert on setting up a race car. The only complaint I have about the tuning is the lack of Racing Brakes in the shop. All cars having a brake boost adjust somewhat negates this, but it still feels like some of the variety of braking ability between different cars was lost. Now they all feel more or less the same out of the box, and its up to you to dial them in. I want to feel how much better a Ferrari brakes than a Toyota without having to mess with anything. On the customization front, there is one big plus, and three minuses. I was thrilled with the return of racing modifications. I absolutely loved that on GT2. But only being able to apply it to 17 out of 1000 cars is ridiculous. Why even put it in if that's as far as it goes? Not being able to change/paint wheels on standard cars also disappointed. I spent hours finding the right wheels in older GT games and matching the right color to the car. Now for 80% of the cars, that's lost. Finally, the lack of a livery editor was a big minus for me. I love series like DTM, ALMS and Super GT, where real road cars battle it out. Making my own versions of these cars would probably have turned into one of my favorite parts of the game.

Tracks: 10/10
There's a few tracks missing that I'd love to have, but I can't give less than a 10 here. The Nurburgring alone will take up hundreds of hours of my time, and old favorites like Laguna Seca and Grand Valley are back, too. To top it off, now the Top Gear test track is here? Now its only a matter of time before my friends find me furiously tossing a car around the runways, blabbering along in my best Jeremy Clarkson accent! If Citta d'Aria or Costa di Amalfi had stuck around, I'd have to figure out how to make an 11/10 work.

Game Modes: 7/10
The brilliance of A-Spec goes without saying. I would have wasted so much of my life on GT1-4 if I didn't love the racing here! The improvements to B-Spec were, in my opinion, exactly that: improvements. And the fact that it was now a completely separate mode also was better in my mind. But the loss of Dealer-specific events was a huge blow to me. Having so many races scattered throughout GT4 made it feel very real to me, because there are so many different racing leagues and options in real life. As much as I love GT5, I can't ignore this big step backwards. Licenses were the same, a good thing in my mind. Easy on bronze for some quick early progress, and sufficiently challenging on gold to keep my skills sharp.

Gameplay: 10/10
As I mentioned before, A-Spec is brilliant. I was most worried about this aspect at first, for a couple reasons. From GT3 to GT4, there was a change in the way the cars handled for me. I can't really put my finger on it, but my driving style that I had spent so long developing in GT3 just didn't seem to work quite right in GT4. Would it be more of the same for GT5? Thankfully, no. It was GT4's excellent physics, but better. I love the level of detail here! Different drivetrain layouts drive differently. I can feel the understeer of an FF compared to the balance of an MR. A low-revving, torque-heavy car barrels out of corners in a way the peaky, rev-happy smaller engines just can't match. Heavy cars somehow just feel heavy. I have no idea how, but they do! And all of this through the old Sixaxis? How do they do it?? The frosting on the cake here was the improved A.I. Is it perfect yet? No. The one long-standing weakness of GT still shows every once in a while. But there is a definite improvement here. Cars will get out of their line to draft; I've seen them stray off the line to pass; And call me crazy, but I'd swear I've gotten a few aggressive bumps in response to my occasionally ham-fisted driving style. And if the computer is still no real enough for ya, then just jump on over to the online mode! Which brings us to...

Online: 9/10
I haven't spent much time online yet, but my limited experience has been great. The multiple setup options allow you to set up just the right race for your tastes. The only downside, the inevitable overly-aggressive, ruin-the-race type drivers, has been tempered by giving you the option to give 'em the boot. Online mode takes GT5 from being almost endless to truly endless. I don't think I'll ever put it down!

Sound: 9/10
One area where GT4 fell short for me was the sound. Nothing stirs my deep-down car passion like the sound of a screaming V12 or the roar of a big-inch V8. But in GT4, too many of the cars sounded generic and flat. Much of the character that differentiated different cars and engines just wasn't there. So I was overjoyed when I realized that GT5 has made a big step forward here. The noise from the '69 Z28 is spine-tingling. The maniacal shriek of the Enzo sounds like a V12 should. And then I met the Alfa. The noise the 8C makes cannot be described. Go hear it for yourself.

Picture: 10/10
Easiest thing to rank. The game is just beautiful. Maybe I just don't have a discerning enough of an eye, but the difference between Standard and Premium is a non-factor for me, they all look great. The expansive backgrounds that have been added to each track blew me away. This rating was sealed when I ran the 4 Hours of the Ring for the first time. I could almost smell the smoke from the BBQing spectators!

Overall: 85/100
This rating was simply the sum of my 10 categories above. The few disappointments here are far outweighed by more of the same-ol' that has made the previous GT titles the reason I'm a gamer. I don't have the money or the skills to be a real-life racer, but thanks to GT5, a very good approximation is never far away. Count me as a very happy customer 👍

Not knocking your review, but the whole porsche thing was out of their control. Porsches can and only will be on xbox since the license is only valid on there; that contract can't be broken.

Nascar is not racing

sorry im just not a fan of it
i dont know why its in the game

It's in the game because it's the most respected form of auto racing in the United States. Agree with it or not, but don't bitch about it here, please. At least go to a thread about cars that are pointless. Thank you.

sorry im just not a fan of it
i dont know why its in the game

I just hope that if you make that comment and you are an F1 fan that you can justify how watching what is mostly a parade can be deemed racing.

Either way, it is terribly off-topic and completely unnecessary in this thread, unless that was your attempt at a review of the game?

Back on subject gentlemen. This isnt a thread about what type of racing is superior. Keep it to reviews and people competing for the remaining slots, Kai's already been warned about Chit-Chat in her thread.

I had a guy drop out. I really liked his review. I never thought giving away a wheel would be so hard. Help me out GTPlanet

November 24th, 2010, a momentous day for any fan of the Gran Turismo series, after all, the long awaited Gran Turismo 5 was released. 5 years of work, 5 years of hype, and 5 years of waiting all culminated into Gran Turismo 5. And that fundamental question that everyone has wondered about still looms was it actually worth the wait?
Yes the wait was worth it, however Gran Turismo 5 is sadly, even after extensive patching: flawed. Perhaps it’s a mistake on the developers, perhaps standards have risen, but the fundamental flaw still exists; Gran Turismo 5 is a game that while fun, is incomplete and seemingly unfinished.
You start off having the game ask if the ~8GB install should be done, and unless you are out of HDD space, the best route to take is to agree because loading times are quite significant. After the 2 and a half hours of waiting you are met with the main menu, which while aesthetically pleasing is quite simple, there are 5 buttons: GTLife, Arcade, Course Maker, Options, and GTTV. It isn’t until you look inside the options section, GTLife or Arcarde mode do you realize a fundamental flaw. The menus are quite cluttered, in fact almost lacking in any design thought, from the Arcade’s long need to load a preview car, the bizarre options layout, or the decisions made in GTLife involving the Used Car Dealership, the online lobbies, and GT Auto, Gran Turismo 5 has simply put one of the more annoying interfaces, which isn’t too detracting; but makes navigation frustrating at times.
On the subject of strange design decisions, the omission of telemetry options, the option to import the prologue game, an option to oil-change all your cars, the extensive XP system, the killing of licenses or the omission of a fast forward button in B-Spec seems like Polyphony Digital didn’t think this game through very well. It’s a shame too, that there aren’t really enough events that they made two sets for A-Spec(you drive) and B-Spec(automated driver), because the driving in this game is absolutely amazing.
Despite the flaws involving decision (and perhaps time for some) or the longevity of the game, Gran Turismo still does what its name suggests: be the Real Driving Simulator. And my god, is it real; perhaps the best part of the game is the handling physics, it’s not the MOST accurate, but each car at least has a different feel to it and for the most part the cars are modeled with almost pinpoint precision accuracy and an attention to detail that is simply amazing. From the F40’s turbo lag, to the 787B’s Wankel engine, Gran Turismo 5’s representation of the cars and the courses combined with possibly one of the best physics models to date in a console racer, redeem the game by quite a degree.
Sadly however it does not help alleviate the need to grind due to the low cash payouts and the sheer amount of cars, and neither does it help address the graphical disparity between standard cars and premium cars, the latter having more high-res models and an cockpit view wheras the former cars are usually imported from Gran Turismo 4 or GTPSP. And even with a superb driving model, Gran Turismo 5 still has one of the most annoying AI’s for a racing game making races a hit or miss due to the unfair advantage you have of being human.
Presentation wise however Gran Turismo 5 really does appeal to the aesthetic sense, the tracks are rendered beautifully, especially the time and weather change tracks. The premium cars are given an almost obsessive amount of care into being modeled, and in general the graphics engine, aside from aliasing or jagged shadows or perhaps a really badly textured standard is outstanding.
The Verdict for Gran Turismo 5 however is quite tricky. On one hand you have a graphical masterpiece that truly appeals to the petrolhead, the driving either with a wheel or a controller is simply one of the best experiences ever presented. On the other hand, the game is unabashedly unfinished, there is a lack of events, the things they touted such as rally, karting or Nascar, don’t really have enough events, especially rally which outside of the events in the Special Events section are missing. The loading times coupled with the need to navigate through many places makes a player impatient.
However, at the end of the day, regardless of all the interface niggles, or the fact that it takes a mind boggling amount of racing to get enough money to get some of the nicer cars, the game truly does represent itself. It is as close to driving as you can get, it isn’t the most REAL driving simulator, but it does a great job. The fact that the driving alone is such a pleasurable experience makes and almost redeems Gran Turismo immensely.
And that’s honestly the real verdict I can give, that Gran Turismo 5 isn’t made for everyone. It’s made for those who don’t care about the niggles of interface and can ignore the asinine and tedious system Gran Turismo 5 is designed around. Gran Turismo 5 instead is really designed perhaps for those who simply care about the driving experience, those who really don’t care for the100% completion. And it makes perfect sense with the sheer amount of cars it has. The only issue is that Gran Turismo 5, at the end of the day, while being a great driving simulator and a graphically stunning game, falls short because it simply didn’t fulfill all the promises it made, that after 5 years we are given instead a game that is for the most part unfinished and lacking in both polish and variety of events (especially compared to Gran Turismo 4). Everything else could be forgiven if the game wasn’t so lackluster in the polish section, but because it’s so lacking in many basic aspects it really can’t be recommended to most people unless they have a decent interest in driving. And if they do, well they’ve got a hell of a fun ride.

It's quite long. But here's my go at it. It's not as comprehensive as the first draft but that was because the first draft was destroyed somewhere.

REPOST
Well since I'm doing this review I thought I would give a little background on myself first. My name is Bunmi (pronounced Boomee its Nigeriean) 31 year old guy that lives in Northern VA and I am a CAR NUT! Its so bad my dogs names are Pnut turbo and Lady Torque. When I was younger I had an interest in cars but it didn't blossom fully until I played 2 games one of them being Gran Torismo. I'm now the car stat guy amongst my friends and family They ask me on the spot how much horsepower a certain car has stock and I spit the answer out. I memorize stats on cars horsepower ratings, which cars handle good, which were reliable ect. I started picking up magazines and would constantly read reviews and features on cars it got so bad that at one time had 13 subscriptions to various car magazines I just love cars I can appreciate the high revving engine of a Honda S2000, and the handling of a Miata, the prestige of a Porsche and the heritage and muscle of the Mustang. I have had my preorder in for about a year or so only upgrading it to get the collectors edition. Most of my friends gave up on GT5 and went on and picked up other games, but I still had faith in GT5. I got off work at 8 am parked at my local gamestop at 830 and went to sleep.Gamestop opened at 10 am I was on my way home by 1004 am with my collectors edition in hand! Now on the the review portion have been waiting for this game like you all for a long time.

Graphics 9/10 Graphics are great I had my issues with the non-premium cars but it didn't bother me to much plus that was not a surprise most people already new about that before the game came out. Premium cars with the in car view is amazing absolutely love it. Photo mode is wonderful the detail given during photo mode is great you can make out every little thing even in the interior of the cars.

Sound- 9/ 10 sound track wasn't that great but I think we are all used to all the Jazz that is usually found in GT( I like jazz not in my racing games though) - you can use your own custom sound which makes up for that. The sounds of most of the cars I played were good especially the 2011 sti and the Stock mustang gt where i have issues is when you add performance exhaust on the said Mustang and it sounds like a 4 cylinder or v6 instead of the V8 there are several glitches that need to be ironed out like this which is why I took a little off

Gameplay -10/10 I played at a Friends house with the G25 and holy smoke! If I had the money I would have already have the wheel. I also enjoy the gift system I have been able to give cars to help out other people and they send my car back nice and modded as a thank you this system should be incorporated more. There are tons of modes you can spend hours in any of them! Bspec adds more of its own spin for a different experience( its rewarding when your driver finally improves). The online as time has gone on has improved!.

Overall- 9.5/10 Like many of you are aware there have been a couple of hiccups since the launch of the game. That being said it seems like Polyphony Digital is ready to support and make the game better through patches. I can appreciate that and seeing some of the other glitches other games have been having lately. Its nice to see that they want to get it right.Yes we had to wait 6 years and some things are a disappointment but what it boils down to is are you enjoying the game and for me it is a resounding Hell YEAH!! More you put into this game the more you will get out of it. Forget the 800 standard cars, jagged edges which I don't notice, forget the AI sticking to it's race line. GT5 handling and physics are superb, I can feel the bumpy road and the most important thing which games forget now days it's fun to play. Its been a rough year for me not alot of bright spots, being laid off twice and loosing my mother ect ect. I was just looking for something to get away from it all something that kept my mind occupied. With my gaming funds limited especially this year. I have to find games that are gonna last for more than a week, games that I truly enjoy. There is so much variety from Kart racing, Nascar, Tuning, collecting cars, picture taking, and GT TV. Gran torismo isnt a race simulator only it is an automotive car expereince. The detail that went into telling a little bit of history about certain cars is astonishing

If you are in the same boat and are a car nut as well, ask for GT5 for Christmas you wont be disappointed.
Verdict- Boomee 100 percent approved!!!!!!!!!!

Kai or others... In my case, why not dont make a deal? In my country a g27 cost almost 350 bucks. I would like to buy from someone, reasonbly priced. Of course, I will pay the shipping... contact me here or im my email ...
