Driving Line - On or Off?

I took all aids off step by step. The game got better on every step while learning different cars became faster. If you like to get down to tuning your vehicle you absolutely need to turn off all aids. Otherwise it's hard to feel any difference in braking, cornering etc... so if you care about the great in-game physics engine forget ABS TCS and all of it. Next thing is to find room and friends who share same interest =)

Turn it off and just practice practice practice. I think I know the ring like the back of my hand at this point. I recall running a 7:18 in my ZR1 with the line, immediately after ran a 7:20 with the line off. Now I can run under 7:08 in the same car with the line off. Very true that the line can be very conservative, there is definitely potential to go much faster without it. I won't even use it on unfamiliar tracks anymore, I just take a lap or two to feel the track out and then work my way up to the limits. Much more fun that way, most realistic way to learn a track.

I've never used the driving line on any track and I do fine... it makes the game too easy, you should have turned it off as soon as you started playing GT5.

You might as well have someone telling you where to brake... I like to decide for myself.

Best and easiest tip with driving without the line is look at the blinking gear indicator on the bottom right. It flashes right around the time you should be braking.

Nikez
He's driving without the HUD. Therefore no flashing lights

He he - serves me right for not reading all of it properly.

Lots of non-readers here eh! :)

Is it worth learning to drive with driving line off ?

It depends on what your goals are. If you're simply interested in racing with total disregard to your own skill, use the line if you like. If you want to become a better driver, you need to take off the training wheels and run the car on your own without the game telling you how (turn the line off). Real-world drivers don't enjoy a magic, glowing line drawn on the track by God, but rather they have to use their own judgment to figure out how to best get their own car around as effectively as possible. If you want to really be a good racer, you need to go with the line off and accomplish everything on your own.

Also, the driving line isn't perfect. It's sort of a generalization. Different cars perform differently, situations vary, and I think the line tends to play it pretty safe. I sometimes find myself taking a different route with a slower car than I would in a faster one, or taking a different line with a more agile car than I would with a less agile one. The line might help you get around alright, but probably not in the most efficient way possible for your specific car and setup.

I don't see a problem with leaving the line on if you want...

The line's fine if a player needs that help, but if they want to stand on their own without the game holding them up then they need to take off the water wings.

If you have problems remembering the brakepoints, just remember that the gear indicaotor will start flashing.

I don't make much distinction between the flashing gear indicator and the magic race line. I'm sure there's race cars that have similar features built into them, but I would think that such a crutch isn't so common in motorsports and again if a player really wants to improve their skill they need to stop relying on the game helping them out all the time. As before, if they need the help, want the help, and are happy with training wheels, more power to them, but I also like to encourage players to eventually take off the training wheels at some point.

If you drive with the line on, you end up forgetting about everything else and ONLY look at the line. turn it off and use the gear shift indicator to cue your braking points. It's what I've been doing since GT3.. and It's not quite like the driving line, at certain corners it blinks sooner than needed, but still they don't tell you how long you should hold the brakes down for.

I'm really glad I found this thread! I've been driving with the line on most of the time, and never really thought to turn it off. Not sure why, as I use MT and have all other driving aids off other than ABS 1. Why not turn it off?

So I turned it off last night and was wondering how I'd do. I hit the Nürb with a fast car to see what would happen. Amazingly, I must have learned just fine with the line on, because I had the track perfectly memorized and still nailed almost all of my brake points. It's so much better with the line off!

I can say this, I don't intend on ever turning it back on. I REALLY prefer it off.

If you don't know where driving line is when graphical help is not displayed, you should go play different game.

Driving line depends on the car you're driving so the in game line isnt always the best one, plus i find it distracts me and i tend not to learn the track properly when my eyes are focused on the line, so i turn it off wherever possible. I did use it for that Grand Tour night event with the Lamborghini in the special events, can't see a thing on that event.

I have it off, its more immersive that way. Also the driving line in GT5 is likely to cause seizures, whoever designed it was insane. So now I know why theres that warning message on startup.

I have it on, but use only for finding braking points (which are sometimes indicated in wrong places, such as at Nurburgring 24h, last corner before entering Nordschleife, where you should brake earlier than the line suggests).

Racing line is used by me when;
  1. Racing at the Indianapolis 500
  2. Grinding for money and XP
  3. Bored
  4. Driving a Go-Kart/FGT/*insert car that does not have headlights* in a Night Track
  5. Driving (learning to drive...) in a unknown course, AKA course maker courses

I have never liked the driving line purely aesthetically, and turning it off is the very first thing I do with any racing game that has one. Having said that...... I use it in GT5 during night races because I can't see a damn thing. Especially on the Tuscan tracks. Makes a huge difference. 👍

Take off all assists and drive without the line. Remove those training wheels, man :)

Do you guys think that you can pull faster laps with manual shifting opposed to automatic shifting?

If you know how and when to shift it can be a little faster. Lets say your car redlines at 7,500 rpm, but peak power is at 6,500 rpm. It would be faster to shift at about 6,800 to 7,000 rpms so you stay in the power band longer. Also automatic will shift down into 2nd in a turn that can be taken in 3rd just because it has specific shift points.

About the driving line, I used it at first on the new tracks that have never been on GT5, but I don't use it anymore. It's a great tool for learning tracks, but do not rely on it because a lot of online rooms have it turned off.

i drive with it on but Thats just because i got lazy before they started putting the racing line in games i could drive fine but now i need the driving line on i wish they hadn't started putting into games

Ultimately if you have to use any assist besides traction control or abs you are not a racer. The line tells you where to be which in essence is cheating. The over assists keep you planted to the road which in essence is cheating. So no I never use the line. Haven't used it since day 2 of driving. Can learn how to drive when being told how to drive.

I always have it on, even when drifting. I hate going to rooms where they force u to turn it off. It's kinda obvious of where the best driving line is especially when u played every course a lot. I mainly use the red parts as guides to tell me when to break because all cars are different and even tho it says break u usually have to do it a bit before or a bit after. Also with drifting it helps a lot to have view points on the road even tho u don't actually follow the line or break points.

It depends! If I want to get a truck I am not familiar with done quickly I turn them on, but don't really follow it. I rather use it as an indicator for sharp turns. Else, I drive without them distracting me.

Have only used it once, for the Tuscan night race in the Grand Tour special event otherwise it's always off.
