Dvd +/- Rw Drives

What is the difference between DVD - RW drives and DVD + RW Drives and DVD +/- RW Drives.

Different burning layouts, which sucks, because you can't inter-use the two styles. I'd recommend getting a DVD burner with dual capability, so you're not limited on options.

Yeah, just different formats. Different companies adopted each format for different reasons, none of which make any sense to me ...

Sony went after the + format early on. Pioneer jumped on the - format. Now they both make drives that do both. *shrug*

You can get a fast internal drive that does both - and + for under $300 now.

My dad got an DVD +/- 8X burner on the net for £65. I'd say that's pretty cheap.

And do all DVD players support only DVD-?

No. Most DVD players support neither, and the fairly expensive ones usually support both. At least that's been my experience, but that's in the US.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I've found that most PS2's are happier playing DVD +R's than -R's, none will play re-writables.

Most older DVD Players, expensive or otherwise prefer +R's and not -R's or RW's but most newer DVD players will play all four formats.

I would agree with waiting if you need the capacity. currently you can only burn 4Gb onto a DVD or about 2 hours of TV quality video, Wait for the dual-layer media to come down in price and get about 9gb or 4 hours to a disc

So I take it if you have DVD-RW discs it won't work with a DVD+RW drive will it?

It won't burn in the DVD+RW drive, but it should be able to be read in it.

Ahh, I get it now. I'd have to agree, as well. You'd think they'd just make something right off the bat that wouldn't have to be updated, well, they're just mean, I guess.
