I recieved this email this morning. It looks quite interesting.

Is there such a thing as an ethical hacker?

I wonder how ethical the people that train you are?

Nevertheless. I might look into it. :)

White Hats...

And yes... In order to defend yourself, you need to know how the other side works.. I can highly recommend two books called "Stealing the Network: How to 0wn the box" and "Stealing the Network: How to own a continent" which deals with hackers and hacking technology - real technology put into short stories written by people in the know...

[Edit:] Both books are published by Syngress btw..

Well, hacking's really two moral standpoints, if you can justify it then what's wrong with it? Only the people on the other side have a converse view.
EDIT: Ok, perhaps some people do use it for bad uses. I'm, once again, wrong.

If you are hacking to steal people's credit card numbers, that's unethical
If you are hacking to see peoples hospital visits or other personal info like that, is that ethical, even though it's illegal?
If you are hacking to see someone elses computer just to see it and not to modify it, is that ethical, even though (as far as my knowledge goes) there is no set law against it
If you are being hacked and you find out who it is and their IP, does that give good reason for you to hack them? Even if you damage their computer, could they take you to court over personal damages?

White Hats and Black Hats. White hats are indeed ethical. I helped my old boss manage a small business network for a while. One morning we found an unknown Word document on our main server volume. It was written by a stranger who had gotten into our server. He politely described exactly how he did it, and made recommendations for how we should increase our security.

A Black Hat would have just trashed several hundred thousand dollars worth of CAD files and design documents on the off-chance we hadn't backed up recently.

In no way can you justify hacking... It's the Internet equivalent of me opening your mailbox with a crowbar and reading your mail.. Would you like that ?...

Me using a crowbar on my own test boxes to see what can be done to prevent YOU from being successful with a crowbar OTOH is a completely different story..

Having done a few courses on Network Administration, i would like to know how to Hack as to better secure networks. I would indeed be interested in such a course.

A Black Hat would more likely have stolen everything and not left you a single clue he had done so... Black Hats are not out to destroy, they're out to steal and get away with it... If you steal 300000 credit card accounts and tell the company you've done so, you can be pretty damn sure those cards are off the market in no time - if the Company DON'T know OTOH... You type the rest..

Try the books I recommended earlier. Especially the first one if you want some tips...

At least you don't have to worry about being hacked--your firewall will literally destroy the attacker. Are those weapons registered? Do you really trust a computer to handle live-ammo firearms?

In respond to what post ?...

In response to your avatar. It was supposed to be funny, Mr. Serious.

Anyhow, I'm sure not all Black Hats are out to steal something, though it makes sense to do so. There are plenty out there that just like to mess things up, not realizing that the new computer they ordered from Alienware will be delayed because they just detroyed CAD files for the design of the case or something.

Of course not, the world of "hats" isn't black or white, just like the rest of the world..
