F1 Games - General Discussion

I've said before that I still think the F1 games are pretty good. They would be, underneath all the Braking Point and Pirelli Supercars stuff is Codemasters making a racing game, which is ALWAYS a good thing. But with this stuff about EA Sports WRC, lay offs, the quiet discontinuation of DIRT and GRID, I £%#%ing hate the influence EA have had over them over the last four years. I really hope they don't ditch the licence though because if they did, that would surely be the end of Codemasters altogether. I hope F1'25 turns out to be a good game and I hope people buy it and enjoy it.
I hope F1 2025 fails rock hard since I don't want a single penny to go to these crooks of EA. Codies employees would be better off in searching an employer that actually cares. Codemasters is dead since EA bought them. Only Ian Bell seems have had the courage to not bend to EA's will, he fell, struggled , got back on his feet and soldiered on.

Lets see what Project Motor Racing actually does before we assume that.

As for F1 25, I don't want it to fail, partly because it is going to be excellent, and also because they are now effectively the last remnant of o.g Codemasters.

I'll also repeat my previous statement again, who can do it better? Who has the money behind them to do the F1 series properly, better than EA/CM, and be successful? I'd be bold and say there are no developer/publisher combos who can do it.

I despise what EA have done, but the catch 22 is there isn't anyone better to do the F1 games right now.

And trust me, as long as it doesn't release riddled with bugs, F1 '25 might just save the series.

Well I don't say PMR will succeed but Ian has been a person outspoken that seems to have stood up against EA and chased after his vision for creating a game while the whole Codemasters team seem to liked have simply bend over.

What I don't understand that if you dispise what they have done, you are still willing to give them your money. Of course that is your personnal choice but being f'ed over and then pay to keep them doing that wouldn't be my personnal choice.

There are a lot more developers that could create an F1 game but the market is too niche it seems. Just look how NASCAR is struggling for years and years allthough they finally get a game that is really good this year. A smaller developer could do great things too but the licence is mostlikely very restrictive and too expensive.

I don't know where F1 is going but they should bail on EA. Put the licence to rest for a couple of years. Find other ways to include F1 content in games is mostlikely the way to go.

Time will tell ;)

Personally I'm happy to buy F1 25 because I want to play it. I'm not that principled, other people can do that if they like but I want to enjoy it, especially if it turns out to be successful and improved, because surely that's good for Codemasters?

The Codemasters team didn't have a choice, it's was bend or disappear. I can speak out against EA and be angry at what they've done and still support the last remnants of Codemasters through F1. The market for F1 is one of the largest as far as a racing franchise goes, F1 is huge, which makes the license very expensive and as you say, restrictive. F1 want a yearly release for example, which limits significantly what you can do as a developer. Few studios out there can afford to dovetail 2 teams on effectively an alternate release biannual schedule like EA/CM have done.

And for sure, small developers can do great things with the F1 license, we've seen it before with Geoff Crammonds Microprose, but the market for that specific game was so tiny that they couldn't even get a launch over the line on the og Xbox for Grand Prix 4 and they died.

EA are scummy, they have scummy practices and have killed some great studios and franchises. But to presume the F1 license would be better elsewhere is tough to prove given that the other publishers big enough to take on the weight of the F1 license are just as shady and scummy as EA and in some scenarios, worse.

Enjoying it so far. Handling feels very nice, good balance of the best elements of the recent games, very fun to attack the circuits. The lidar tracks look excellent, to the point some of the other circuits look a bit meh, but the improved lighting and general scenery work makes up for it a little bit.

Ai is much more racey, had some great battles in the few short races I've done, definitely need to work on defensive driving as the AI will go for moves if the door is open and they race eachother as well.

Livery editor is a huge improvement, really nice to see you can make some excellent designs. From season 2 in career mode as well you can change the order of the calendar and add in the reverse circuits, nice touch.

I'll use the trial to test this on controller, as I had issues in the past, and if it's ok I'll buy it as a thank you to Codies. It very much seems they've reached the end of the road as a developer in their own right, and will in the future just be another regional EA studio.

"I have been able to learn that there are about 400 more layoffs coming up at EA, a total CLOSURE of the main headquarters of Codemasters and that these developers will be integrated into EA Sp (F1) and a new Need For Speed that is already in development."

Had a particularly fun battle with Hamilton on Imola, showcased the improved AI very well, he had the DRS, I covered the inside, he switched to the outside line, broke very late and passed me round the outside of T1, he then held the line and kept me on the outside of turn 3 forcing me to concede at turn 4, then he covered the line into turn 6 to stop me diving underneath. In F1 24 the AI would have backed out of a move round the outside and stopped a 6 corner battle.

Reverse Zandvoort.

It would be cool if they let you continue your career from previous games. I'm sick of starting from scratch, I've already done that at least 12 times.

My last F1 game was 2020, I put about 250 hours into that but never felt the urge to pick up another one until now, from what little I've seen and heard '25 seems rather nicely polished overall!

That said this does seem like the last F1 release from CM; judging by what happened with the WRC license + subsequent rumours, the next 2 years being a renewal option, the upcoming regulation changes for 2026 and (last but not least) the price difference... F1 '24 is still being listed at £59.99 on Steam whilst '25 is £49.99.

Not sure it'll be the last. 2026 will already be in active development as they have overlapping year developments, they'll renew for that one at least. Plus the recent EA entertainment closures have had staff redistributed specifically to the F1 team.

2027 may be a different story and whether they extend the 2nd year option I don't know, but I do think we will see a 2026.

Update [Thu 29th May 2025, 7:35pm]: An EA spokesperson has gotten in touch with us to debunk the rumours surrounding Codemasters. Ultimately, this is very good news and we're happy that Codemasters will continue for the foreseeable future.

Here's the statement in full:

"The speculation around Codemasters is entirely unfounded and inaccurate."

So there you have it! Carry on.

I “continued” my F1 23 driver career and joined Ferrari right away. I just completed my first race at 50% distance. All three practice sessions were dry, but qualifying was a wet track for Q1 and most of Q2. No rain for the race.

I’m enjoying it but I’m not sure what to think of some things. For example the ai seem slower, but are they actually slower or is the game just that much easier compared to 23? Because the handling is also pretty forgiving.

At the end of the day though I’m a casual player who only plays career mode so I don’t care about realism that much for something like this. It’s a really good game in terms of single player racing games, arguably the best imo.

The only bug or issue I noticed was being given 2 laps to reach a certain lap time during my pit window.

No mouse support on pc still drives me bananas. I keep a controller plugged in just to navigate the menus because it gets tedious doing it with the wheel or keyboard.

So I bought this as well. I believe the first F1 game I pre-ordered since F1 2010 🤣

In the week leading up to the release, I played F1 24 a bit through EA Play, and I have to admit it feels pretty much the same to me. If there are differences to the handling, I'm not really feeling them...
With the exception of Breaking Point, it is the exact same game for me.

Has a quick look at the livery editor. Definitely much more you can do now, moving the decals, choosing variations and so on really adds a lot of depth. Could do with a few more base liveries but I like what's there and you can unlock the sponsor special liveries through playing career which is great.
My first effort is a bit naff but take my word for it 😂.

One thing I love with the livery editor, is it automatically puts the decals on the opposing side.

I've been playing since Tuesday, and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Honestly, I bought F1 24 I the sale in November-ish, and I've already played F1 25 more than I did 24.

Handling is much better (in the dry), and the livery editor and ability to change the logos for each sponsor is beautiful. My team 2.0 I can't say much about yet as mostly been playing in ranked online whilst I get used to it.

What I will say, is that wet weather physics / handling is atrocious if you (like me) use Traction Control. Basically, at this point in time, traction control renders wet weather races (against the AI, not other humans online) absolutely pointless. I hope they can do something about that because that's a career mode ruiner if they don't. Seems like you have zero traction until 4th gear and then it's normal again - by which point the AI have pulled ahead by another 0.5 seconds. I haven't noticed this in F1 games before.

@MagpieRacer yellow team assemble! I'll send pics later. Love it though

Edit: introducing ElectroPlat Seagull Racing F1 Team. Feels like This livery and the ElectroPlat sponsor were made for ElectricNaz!

And the Seagull for your Brighton fandom I presume? 😜

Check my PSN 😁

Of course! Season ticket holder 😎You're a Magpie and a Seagull 😆 you can't be both haha
Haha, Seagull at heart, Brighton born and bred. Magpies for my Geordie dad 😁. Used to be a season ticket holder but I've lived in Norwich for over 12 years now so don't get to many games. Never had a season ticket for the Amex, was always at the Withdean. My dad and brother have had their season tickets for over a decade now, west side of the north stand.

Nice, great to see a fellow Brightonian on here! I'm West Stand upper, but traveling from Hampshire is annoying at times... Completely worth it though, it's a world apart from the withdean days! Good to meet you, can I add your PSN??

Sure thing!

Yeah that's not a great drive sometimes, actually came that way at the weekend driving to Brighton from Wiltshire.

Accidental Seagull thread hijack, here's some screenshots to maintain topic 😂.

Finished Braking Point this morning, I always found the story quite enjoyable personally. Done the first part of the F1 movie scenarios too, almost looks like there's a different colour filter used for it, maybe to match the colour grading of the film?

A quick tip I have found on PS5 is to change wheel rotation to 270 using a controller. It seems to give me the precise control I was missing with the normal setup though your milage may vary. So far the actual racing against AI is top notch though their straight line speed seems to be slightly too high but only very slightly.

I’m 3 races in and Konnersport already have the best powertrain.

My Chinese GP was chaos. During the sprint, the Antonelli AI spun out in the penultimate corner and got stuck on the racing line for a few seconds, causing a red flag. The same thing happened during the main race with a different AI on lap 3, causing another red flag. Then there was a safety car after that.

Japan was much less eventful. I tried to make a soft + medium strategy work, but I got beaten by Red Bull doing a two-stop. It was fun trying to manage things instead of just driving like a maniac like I did in the previous two races
