Here's a whimsical little movie, that most people have never heard of.... This one is out of France, and it is called:

The City of Lost Children

It's subtitled, so most people tend to look the other way ( lazy fools), but it is worth it, if you take the time to read. It is not a brilliant moving drama. It is all about atmosphere, and mood. It's kind of hard to explain, but check it out, if you haven't seen it....

Seven Samurai starring Toshiro Mifune.

Probably the best movie he was ever in.

I have to agree with you on Once were Warriors.

There are a number of Aus/NZ films that few people outside of Australia would have seen. Just a few would be:

-Chopper
-Two Hands
-The Castle
-Australian Rules

Perhaps they're too Australian, some of the jokes wouldn't make sense to people from anywhere else

The Seven Samurai, is a classic, and I think most everyone has heard of it. I agree that a lot of people might not have seen it though..........

Anybody here seen or heard of Diva? It's a French thriller from the early-mid '80s; very stylish, very good, about a singer who has never allowed herself to be recorded, and her biggest fan who makes a bootleg. One of the few French things that I truly like. See it in French with subtitles, or don't see it at all.

Funny you should mention bad taste. I saw that on HBO, gory as hell, I liked it for that reason. I mentioned it back in 2003 but people didn't really respond to it. I have Bad Taste on DVD and 2 copies on VHS. I like the gore, he really goes all out.

an old post.

Has anyone heard of "Escanaba in da moonlight"?
That wasn't an overly popular movie, but it was funny, cause it takes place in my state, in the U.P.

anyone ever seen Incubus(1965) it has William Shatner in it before Star Trek. Allyson Ames, Milos Milos (as "The Incubus"), Eloise Hardt, Robert Fortier, and Ann Atmar. It's supposed to be pretty cool but i haven't seen it yet, has anyone else?? is it good??

And, how many people have seen Pushing Tin? It was quite a mainstream movie and I liked it. The romantic bit was a tad overdone though.

"Pushing Tin" was interesting indeed, and I'll even agree with you on the romance complaint.

I've also checked out "Run Lola Run", great directing in it, and the soundtrack wasn't too shabby (but that's coming from an electronica enthusiast)

Yea, the soundtrack was pretty ok (this coming from someone who doesnt usually like that sorta stuff)

A great movie, and even if you don't understand any of it, there's lots of eye candy to look at.

Anyone seen Ghost Dog?

Wow! Someone else has seen "The City of Lost Children".......
Yeah, it's a very gritty old Paris like strange alternate reality. It's interesting, and as you said, it's a beautiful movie to watch unfold........

I have seen Ghost Dog. While the acting wasn't the best, in some areas. It was an interesting plot, and the Rza (Wu-Tang) made an apearance, which was cool..............

How many people have seen Lagaan? Foreign movie (India) I thought it was ok except for the parts where it turns into a musical. 👎

Too bad about 8 billion people have seen it... check the whole thread title!

Welcome to GTPlanet.

I don't know if these qualify as "no one's ever seen them", but here goes:

My Dinner With Andre - I didn't think a 90 minute movie of a real-time dinner conversation would be interesting, either

Raising Arizona - the movie that gave us Nicolas Cage, Molly Hunter, and John Goodman, truly hilarious

The Bedford Incident - honest-to-goodness, gripping drama made in the early '60s about a Cold War duel between a US cruiser and a Soviet sub

amazingly, I have seen My Dinner With Andre, and i actually thought it was interesting too!

Raising Arizona is a great flic!

and i believe i've seen the third one, but not quite sure. the premise seems familiar.

I know people hear have seen this, but i doubt many: 44 Minutes the movie about the infamous Hollywood Bankrobbery. Great movie. Extremely accurate and realistic.

Actually, that's not what the movie is about at all.... He does not come back from the war (Vietnam).... I have already said too much.....

Jacobs Ladder is quite a brilliant film, and showcases an award winning performance from Tim Robbins as well as Danny Aiello..... There is quite a lot of symbolism in the film that seems to fly over the heads of most viewers....

Anyway, I recomend the film to anyone.....

Lots of interesting titles here. I've got Lola Rennt (original title) on DVD, as well as Big Trouble in Little China, in a special collectors widescreen edition with some original scenes restored and everything, which suggests to me the movie might just be too commonly appreciated for this thread. :) Btw, most girls I know like it, because there are two actors in there that they can relate to (Kurt Russell and Kim Catrell). I saw Raising Arizona too, which is very famous over here (as in 'in Europe')

Movies that just about no-one here seems to know, but you might, is Real Genius, first movie I saw with Val Kilmer (well I think I saw Top Gun before but he didn't register then) and I thought it was absolutely the best he was ever in. There were many pretty famous actors in there with some really great roles, and the movie is just too funny (though I was a pretty young kid when I saw it). It ends with a house blown up by popcorn ...

I also saw a movie which I think was called 'Barcelona' about two Americans in Spain who get caught up in some early anti-Americanism and meet two Spanish girls, and the movie ends with all four of them in a beautiful green garden in the U.S. enjoying real hamburgers from the grill. Absolutely great - it is one of those movies that can be funny and serious at once, like series such as the Gilmore Girls, Everwood, or Cold Feet. :D In case you're worried, it's mostly the Europeans that look stupid in it, as the end-scene already suggests. ;)

Another obscure one is the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie. It's the worst film I've ever seen with that many famous people in it (including the Dutch actor "Blind Fury" Rutger Hauer as the ultimate evil vamp, Donald Sutherland as the watcher, one of those Beverly Hills 90210 guys as Xander, and some sturdy, big breasted, athletic Buffy who at least was convincing for the fight scenes, but didn't have a lot of style or charm) and it is incredibly funny partly because everyone knows the series that eventually came out of it but is so completely different. It reminds me of The Tall Guy, a very funny British film with Rowan Atkinson as someone who is not funny and a leading 'guest' role by the American guy who's name I just now lost but we all know and love from The Fly - everyone has still seen that one, right?).

There are many other movies out there, but I can recommend some early Dutch movies made by Paul Verhoeven like "Soldaat van Oranje" (a Dutch WW2 movie) or "Turks Fruit" (no idea what the English titles would be).

I also love a lot of Scandinavian movies, one of the best of which I find to be Tomten Ar Far Till Alla Barnen, about a woman who has children from 4 or 5 ex-husbands, and who has managed to convince all of them to join her with their new wives/girlfriends and her own new husband to celebrate Christmas together. I laughed so hard when I first saw that movie, it is really awesome and I'm looking to get it on DVD (so far only available in Sweden Apparently). I have another movie from the same director which is very sweet, but a lot more standard fare Romance called something like The Boy from the Grave Next Door. Two other DVDs I have are ****ing Amal and Festen, which are both very famous over here and I've gotten great reviews of them from friends, but I'm waiting to see them with a few friends of mine with whom I once a month or so watch a film from Scandinavia.

There is so much more out there, like films that were originally low budget European movies and were turned into big Hollywood productions later, but were often ironed out then (e.g. bad endings replaced with good ones) and although the acting and production can often be better in the Hollywood version, the original ones can be very interesting. Like this one about a man who's wife suddently disappears completely, and he ends up being fooled into being buried alive next to his wife who died the same way, very gruesome, but in the U.S. version he gets rescued by a new girlfriend, but in the original he just dies. Or the movie about the female assassin, I think it is called Nikita (I can be very bad with names), which is very good, very moody in the French original. And of course Luc Besson did some great things in France before he came to the U.S. ;) I just saw a pretty funny German movie a week ago, I think it was called 'Wass Tun Wenn Es Brennt", about a gang of anarchists whose bomb they planted but never went off goes off 12 years after the fact, when most of them have gotten on with their lives. Very funny at times, sometimes also touching, and very interesting. Not great, but very good.

I'll leave it at that for now, I'm sure a lot more great stuff will come up here ... very nice thread this by the way!

"Pi" is a brilliant movie about a Mathmatician and his struggle to better interpret our world... Directed by Darren Aranofsky (director of Requiem for a Dream)... This film has a lot of complexity, and subtle nuances that must be viewed a few times and pondored over to really come to grips with....

Highly recomended....

Momento and Donnie Darko are two that stick out for me.
*EDIT* And Harold and Maude. That one was pretty twisted though.

It's Memento.... Also, Both "Donnie Darko" (Way overated if you ask me), and "Memento" have been seen by a huge number of the populous....

Harold and Maude is a bit more obscure though.....

Jonny darko was IMO also overated, its not one of those films which screams watch me again! Or that you go out and buy.
Well, im going to have to mention Battle Royale, and Battle Royale 2. The second has probably seen by the fewest people as it got bad reviews, and if youve watched the first one maybe this discouraged people from watching it. Personally i think they are both great films, hence my Avatar lol.

Pi sucked. Irritating music, incoherent plot, and totally out of touch with reality. I hated it.

I think I'm gonna have to rent this one. I think, I might've caught some of it before. Some loves this flick and some hates it.

My 2 picks would be: "Brotherhood of Wolf"(French) and "The Experiment"(German). Both AMAZING movies, but not many have seen. "The Experiment", I don't think anybody has seen.

I thought Memento was very good.

Have many people seen the Jet Li movie Romeo Must Die? It has Aaliyah and Isiah Washington in it also and is about gangland property wars. Certainly worth a watch or two.
