GM is the Illyushin of the american car world.

I think you might have answered your own question. GM's financial situation is nowhere near that of Ford. I haven't checked their stock price since they (pretty much)went down, but I'm betting their finance is pretty lean still.

I guessed as much that this would be the case. So they should take the 5.3L, make it all aluminum and do some basic tuning and BAM 420bhp or more. That wouldn't be difficult at all because the LSx series engines have aftermarket parts galore. And they could just as easily contract Edelbrock or some other such tuning company for the SBC and save some R&D $$.

But, the main point they need to do is shedding some weight on all of their cars and concentrate on smaller engines and sprinkle some FI here and there to make us petrol heads happy. But for the most part they seem to be in that same state of mind since the early 80's. And that right there just pisses me off.

This generation Camaro will not compete with the '11 GT. It barely beats the '10 GT for that matter. I hereby announce the 2011 Mustang GT the winnar before it even hits the salesroom floor. :sly: 👍

I don't understand GM Brad. Why do they insist on using these larger displacement engines instead of using some R&D like Ford and come out with something that has less than 6.0L that produces the power and has the fuel economy like the new Ford 302? GM can do it, why do they choose not to? Are they that scared and or to broke to try?

I think it has more to do with whats already on the shelf and what has worked thus far. Generally speaking, despite the massive increase in displacement over the LS1 to the LS3, fuel economy has improved just as the power has. GM decided to cut some corners, for good or worse, by designing the Vortec and LS series engines on the same basis, sharing a lot of hardware between them. Otherwise, I do agree that using a modified version of the LY5 (5.3L) V8 would be a good idea in some of these cars, after all, the LS4 was a pretty sweet version of the motor in the W-bodies.

But, as I said in my post above, the Gen V engines are right around the corner. My understanding had been that we would expect a fairly significant downgrade in displacement while losing little to no BHP overall. They were taking somewhere around 4.5-5.0L for the "basic" V8s, no bigger than 5.3-5.7L for the largest displacements. Basically, they would throw all of the tech they currently have at them (all aluminum, direct injection, variable valve timing and cylinder shutdown technology) to create the most power and fuel economy possible... All while keeping the standard OHV design (hooray!).

Its a typical back-and-forth between Ford and GM. The General won't take this sitting down, updates are already leaking out for the 2011 model, but it all comes sans a weight loss. Damnit.

My bet is the next Chevy V8 has 5.5L, same as their GT2 Corvette with its' production derived V8.;) Also, the Camaro V6 has just been re-rated at 312hp to maintain horsepower bragging rights. No, it's not an upgrade, but merely that the 2010 model was under-rated so they're revealing the V6's true power to keep ahead in power wars.

Haha, "re-rated". I need a link so I can read this for myself. :) And even if that Camaro V6 had 320bhp it still wouldn't touch the '11 Mustang V6. Again, weight is the killer. But I digress.

^^^ agreed. But your average American muscle car buyer is going to see the larger HP number and think it's faster. The Mustang still has it beat on weight and on MPG.

lol liar's poker.

Next up, Ford gains 20hp and cites changed ECU mapping.

InsideLine's numbers always seem more believeable, and they're straight up about whether or not roll-out was used. Here's their 2011 GT track video:

I drove a 2010 fully loaded GT yesterday and I must say I was throughly impressed.

So I was bored yesterday and figured I would stop by a local Ford dealership and look at the new stang. After about 10 mins bull s***ing with a salesman he said I could take a new stang for a drive :).

There was only 2 stick gt's on the lot and this beautiful red with black stripes model was in front. At first glance the interior seemed bland but once I got behind the wheel it was, dare I say luxurious. The leather seats were comfy and supportive and the steering wheel wasn't an eyesore either. The reverse camera in the rear view was a nice touch for the parking impaired and was very clear but it doesn't seem to necessary. Seems to be just another expensive option that they can suck more money out of nieve customers.

The Shifter was short and it was very smooth for a muscle car. Also the different gears were well defined and there wasn't any mistaking 3rd for 5th or something like that. For crusing at 70 or 80 you could still easily be in 4th and not revving the car out by any means. The clutch was rather docile as compared to older ones in my opinion. Not saying it wasn't nice or anything because it was very user friendly and did catch like a madman under hard acceleration but it wasn't a balls out clutch like a Sti or Evo I have driven in the past, which is good.

The car does a good job driving like a civilized car when you want to drive normal and can be a beast when you feel like being a mad man. I went from 60-110 in the blink of an eye (compared to my gti) and was extremely impressed. One can only imagine how the 400 something horses the new 5.0 will dish out will feel in this car, I am super excited for this.

Over all I really enjoyed this car. As is with the 4.6 it is a great car in my opinion and is a great platform for the new 5.0 coming out next year. Finally Ford is putting out some real competition for the Camaro!

Here is a picture of the one I got to test drive.

Lmao it chirped every gear. 👍

More average, yes. Also, maybe a better idea of what most people would be running. I really don't think 12.5 would be out of the question for an experienced driver under the right conditions. So I wouldn't say InsideLine is any more or less believable, just that the 12.7 the other mags run isn't going to be seen as often.

I think MT use roll-out on all their tests and don't tell anyone.

+1 If you average all the numbers that would be a more real world test. But either way did you notice that it spun the wheels shifting from 1 to 2 then from 2 to 3? Awsome. :D

Now that Chevy has upped the power in the V6 Camaro to be just ever so slightly more powerful than the V6 Mustang, I hope Ford tweaks the V8 in the 2012 Mustang GT so it puts out, say, 431 horsepower, just to say "your move, GM". Since then, oh snap!, it would be on.

You know who wins a horsepower war? EVERYBODY.

Mmm, and people complain about the solid rear axle. I think it does just fine at .91g. Although I'd still like to see IRS as an option for these cars.

I'd rather have a near perfect LRA than a **** IRS.

You're not alone, I feel the same way. But given the choice between a perfect LRA and a perfect IRS, I'd choose neither and pick a car with a good, but not great, De Dion tube, in the form of a transaxle, with inboard brakes. But that's just me, and I'm insane.

^^ Awesome, now I don't know if it's Shelby that rocks, or Audi that sucks.

Horsepower figures must be similar, so Ford wizards can build a car that handle that well, frankly, the new Stang has only the power and looks to claim the title "Muscle car", handles better than an high priced AWD German exotic, this is just impressive.

Well done, Ford. 👍

Nice vid. I expect the time difference is probably down to the Mustang being a bit more adjustable on the throttle (you can see the amount of times the driver had the car deliberately sliding through the corner to set himself up for the next) and also riding the kerbs better. It's quite an agressive circuit by the looks of things and I expect the Mustang is a bit better than the Audi at making best use of that.

Pretty good time and a good video. I'd love to see more incar videos like this with no music and the speed/etc telemetry. :D But, no forced induction could be heard...

I will take a 2011 Shelby GT500 in Grabber Blue and White stripes! Anybody willing to buy me one, i would be really greatful!!!:sly:

Interestingly, a guy on another site (Jack Baruth), says the new 5.0 has the shove to go Corvette hunting on the track, though it lacks the braking ability to do extended runs compared to the lighter sportscar... even with the optional Brembos that come on the Shelby.

Someone on the internet says something, I wouldn't believe it.;)

So I says to my mom: "Can't wait for that damn turbo Sonata to come out so I can go check it out."

She says: "I want to try one of those new Mustangs."

 How did she learn about the new mustang?

Baruth has a good bit of track experience, including one or two LeMons wins (which is much more impressive than a LeMans win, in that most LeMans cars aren't held together with duct tape).

Of course, considering the chances of irreversible brain damage in a LeMons race, there is something there...

The damage gets done in a LeMons race? Shouldn't there be some sort of damage there already to enter in the first place? It's common sense really, the Vette is lighter, more powerful and has generally been proven as a faster all round car, the only way the 5.0L Mustang could keep up with a decent C6 Corvette is by virtue of having a much better driver.
