I think it's more in line with the original Toyota Celica and the 2000GT. The Supra is more GT than sports, and the original AE86 was never designed from the outset to be a performance car...it just sort of happened. In reality, this is more like a new breed entirely.

Well known... FT-86 is successor of AE-86

FT-86 was the concept name. Production name has changed. My post was correct.

The only things they have in common are RWD and 4 cylinder engines.

The GT-86/FR-S/BRZ is not lightweight or inexpensive.

For the $25k+ these things are going to start at, it's already outclassed. At least Subaru is going to offer a turbo version, but that'll probably be north of $30k.

Not lightweight? They weigh under 2700lbs, which compared to say....the Genesis Coupe, it's a feather.

And Price has not been announced yet. Expect ~$23k.

Yes! Another Japanese car that already has several variants in game!

Name one.

Wasn't it also a Supra successor?

No, never has been.

The car looks nice. I never expected for it to keep the unrealistic proportions of the concept, so this is alot like I imagined it.

The rear end is nicely done. It reminds me of a Lexus LFA (it iven has a triangle resembling the LFA's exhaust). The prototype's rear end was too bland in my opinion.

The interior is trully beautiful. Nothing like the FT-86 that felt like driving inside a Nintendo Wii.

The only things I don't like about it is that at some point it reminds me of a Nissan Fairlady Z34/370Z. And that the U.S version will be a scion :P

IF this car was to come to GT5, I'd imagine it'd be the Subaru BRZ version, hopefully that's turbocharged - otherwise I see no point of the car being branded by two manufacturers and sold as the exact same spec(being sold in the same country of course). If that was the case, I'd go for the Toyota if I had to choose IRL.

Well prepare to be disappointed, the cars are exactly the same drivetrain wise. The Subaru will NOT be turbocharged.

It's the same as with a lot of cars in the past. A lot were sold under a different brand with only minor interior and exterior changes. The body work and drivetrain usually stay intact.
I like the car though. Maybe it just needs to lose some weight. The choice for its engine to be of a NA type is because of the original 86 which had a NA engine too. It was praised because of it even! Besides NA engines do have their benefits as well. Also not everyone likes turbo charged engines. But I am sure there will be an aftermarket solution.

Ahahahah that looks so crap but the Ft 86 actually looked great.

ROFL its such relatively minor changes too but every time a concept car goes into production they HAVE to change every part of the styling possible to make it look butt ugly.

Jhonson!! That awesome concept car everyone loves, is going into production, here is the already completed design we got great feedback on, now butcher the hell out of it so it just looks any old car and put it in production, what am I paying you for goddammit!

Dig the pistons, but there's something about that '86' that doesn't seem quite right...

The 6 looks more like a 5 due to the place where the round part of the 6 connects with the 8. It needed a bit more detail to separate the two figures.

As a logo by itself, I like it.

However it looks like a welt on the side of a car that's already proving hard to like. Probably due to the fact that the concepts wrote a check that this car doesn't cash when it comes to exterior appearances. I can't wait to see how the Scion version will disappoint me since the FR-S was one of the best looking iterations out of all of the concepts.

No need to wait.

The Scion version will look basically the same with different badges and slight cosmetic differences.
As good as the Scion FR-S concept looked, it was clear that the actual production model will not be like that.

Personally I am a bit disappointed at the rear of the car. I really liked the long & slim taillight design on the original and the concept ii.

The GT 86 has 197bhp and 205Nm of torque which to me doesn't seem enough if your most likely going to be paying north of £25,000 (AutoTrader article suggests that the final price is £28,000 even though earlier Toyota was hinting around the £22,000 mark).

Well hopefully someone sees sense and bring out a hardcore version, preferably turbocharged and putting out a decent amount of power - 280-300BHP would be enough in my opinion - the reviews of the car on AutoExpress say that the chassis can certainly handle that amount of power, so here hoping Subaru or Toyota do something about it.

THAT.
The movie was launched at the official USA site. Identical to the japanese but with badges and plates changed to SCION FR-S. Can't get more official than that.

Which leads me to a thought... "if" and "when" Polyphony decides to release this model in GT5, which would by publicly released in US? The japanese "Hachi-roku", the european GT86 or the "american" Scion FR-S?

I wouldn't doubt we'll get all three of them , even though the only difference is the badging.

The subaru is supposed to have a 300 hp version, versus 200 for the toyota/scion version.

The best thing about this car is it should create a great aftermarket, if it lives up to expectations.

I'd like to see the Scion FR-S concept make it in the game, as well as the BRZ STI Concept.

Then you could have a GT event that includes all of them!
FT-86
FT-86 G-Sports
FT-86 II
GT-86
86
FR-S Concept
FR-S
BRZ STI Concept
BRZ

It would be glorious in it's excess!

Well then that goes against everything they were saying about how they were going to have three different design studios develop three different styles of the car to use in Europe, America and Asia. Maybe they meant Subaru, Toyota and slightly different Toyota (aka Scion). Or they were just referring to the concept cars.

Oh well, I went back and looked at the FT-86's and the FR-S and then looked at the new car because before that I couldn't see how this thing came out of those fantastic concept cars.

It is cheap and light by todays standards...

The FT-86 was a fantastic looking car which was full of promise with it's Subaru engineering and Toyota reliability. However, being a Toyota it was never going to make production with such modern and sporty styling as Toyota is a hopelessly boring company which is devoid of any spirit nowadays.

I am confident in the GT-86 being a dynamically capable car, thanks to Subaru, but from an aesthetics point it is a crushing disappointment. Toyota has no brand identity whereas the Subaru BRZ is unmistakably a Subaru. Perhaps a TRD or RS version will bring some aggression from the concept.

i hope you are right, just like the GTR AND GTR V-SPEC, or even, CORVETTE C6 and CORVETTE ZR1...

I'll have a spec racing series starting shortly after that runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9pm EST for those in the USA that are interested. 👍

I am really disapointed that it didn't look like the concept. It looks alot different. I wanted it to have fat, low bumpers with big rims and to look epic but it looks normal and boring.

But with that said I guess VeilSide and Bomex will come up with some really good bodykits.

Please VS and Bomex don't let me down.

Sorry but the new Toyota looks ugly
