I did the chillichoke shifter mod and it feels quite good now. Still would like it to be stiffer (that's what she said), but with a longer spacer it would get stuck and felt like it was going to break. 0.6 cm felt not enough, 1cm felt too much, so I went for a 0.8cm spacer behind the spring.
 
You could just line the inner part of the housing (the rim where the stick touches) with the soft side of a velcro strip. Reduces clunk and makes shifting slightly shorter.

All you do is remove the boot and knob, then stick a velcro strip - one that sticks/adhesive, on the inner rim of the shifter opening. I've had it for a few years now, changing it every year to keep it stiff.
 
That is a good idea. I switched to 1cm again because 0.8 felt weak. While it does provide enough resistance it feels a bit stuck when I try to shift to third. There's too much pressure for this design I guess.
