Well, I'm taking German One. So I kinda need to sharpen my skills so I can actually conversate with my Grandparents, and my dad's side of the family..

But the reason I made this thread is because I'm wondering if you of ya'll know any words that can help me. Like somewhat common words..Erm.. I'll leave ya'll confused if I say that.

But any words that can give me a boost in class. Currently the class is doing the "umlaut." I have that nailed. I'm used to changed my vocal cords to a harsh sound like that.
But Please, if any of you can post some pronunciation of the german langauge that would be great!

And I'm curious about this. Is there a way I can type the umlaut and other grammar related symbols itself on the keyboard? Or do I have to get a special keyboard to even type the langauge?

Yay for german! I'm in German 4 AP right now...it's pretty decent. I know that there's supposed to be some special key combination that gives you an umlaut. It's something involving the vowel and the : key at the same time. But...you can get into MS word symbols list or character map. As for good words to know.....haben is always a good verb...means "to have"...machen is another....means "to make"...in many different ways. Then there's sein, which is the infinitive form of "to be." As with all languages, it conjugates irregularly. Then there are things like ich for I, du for you (informal), Sie for you formal. But, you should learn those soon. One quick hint: if you ever don't know a word in class, say it with a german accent and maybe put an e on the end, or an en for verbs (but conjugate, too). It actually works sometimes. But....good luck in class, have fun with the language! :)

And...for character map....
Start > Programs > Acessories > System Tools > Character Map
At least that's it for Windows XP

Man I hated the two years of German I had to take.
One thing people in my year one class never seemed to get was that it doesn't sound right to pronounce everything perfectly - the Germans we talked to on the phone had dialects, like all humans do, and the big one that bothered me was that no one but me figured that out. Like, Ich can be pronounced as Ish, and that's closer to how the natives say it. Apart from that. Uh..well, st is pronounced more like sht, but almost everyone knows that.

Get farmiliar with modal verbs, they make you sound smart to people who speak the language. 👍

Don't know if it could help, but I used to play a paintball mod in Half Life, and lots of Germans played it too. After a few weeks, I was able to read a surprising amount of what the German players were saying, since I had been exposed to the language on a regular basis. Doing something similar such as beginning to frequent German websites or forums will probably help expand your vocabulary. Use a dictionary for unfamiliar words, and actually sound out the words, since it helps it stick, and should help with getting used to speaking the language. Hope it helps!

The only german I know is Achtung (attention). Sorry, cant help ya...

Hahaha I went to a translator site and typed this in from English, to German: Hey Darin I bet you suck at German so you cant read any of this, sucks to be you!
and when translated from German to English:
He therein, which I bet that you suck at the German, thus you diagonally any from this read. Sucks, in order to be!

Damn, no wonder why I failed spanish last year... dont use free online translators for projects 👎

I think it's Scheisse, and the ss at the end is one of those esset beta-lookin things. But don't confuse scheissen with schiessen. One means to **** and the other means to shoot. As in a gun or a soccer ball. And then there's a difference between Man and Mann. I still don't really know what that is. Well.....hope you're still having fun! :)

Heh
Im in German 1 right now, its ok. My teacher is crazy, though. We learn songs and nursury songs and such, and now I can count to 20 in German.
I could already do that, though, so I dont think it counts.

My advice? Learn some random phrases, it can be funny.

Thats a good place to start, just type in something random in english and hit translate.
