Getting a PS3 this weekend 9/26/08. Time for some questions.

Exacly, decent is better then GOOD. And even GOOD blu-ray players are freking awesome looking in 1080p.

By the way. What kind of TV do you have? 1080p or 720p?

For SOCOM beta, you needed to buy first issue of QORE video magazine over PSN. Or I think you needed to be one of members of SOCOM website. I do not thik you can still get it, but QORE is $15 (I think) 12 episodes. Each episode is fun and gives you some info on new games to come out as well exclusive downloads. I think #4 is current one and #5 will come out soon. You should buy one for about a dollar or two, (sorry I forgot exact pricing) See if you like it.

PS3 is soo awesome, easy to put music in, pictures, videos that you "quire" from your PC. You can install different HDDs Faster, bigger without any hustle. You can Install different OPERATING software. Go online, save pictures from online, data, videos, watch youtube.. etc.. do what you wanna do.
Once you go black you are not going back ;)

Bought it a couple hours ago and have been checking it out. Rented GT5P and Vantage Point in BR. Played GT5P for about 30 minutes. Vantage point looked really good but not outstanding like I was hoping. I am hooked up via HDMI so maybe I need to mess with some settings for better visual results.
My tv is a Sony Trinitron Wega CRT HDTV. I also purchased the Blockbuster rental that allows unlimited game and blu ray rentals for $30 a month. So we will be trying the PS3 for a month and if I dont like it I will just get my money back. Right now this really doesnt seem to be worth the money for me.

Let me first say, forgive me for these statements that will almost certainly offend you.

You bought a $400 console knowing little about it?

1. What resolution is your TV?
2. Rent a better movie. www.highdefdigest.com Read the reviews.
3. Take the advice of the people on this forum. Awesome games were listed.
4. How have you had a few hours experience with a console and come to the conclusion it's not worth it? Mind boggling.

Either way, do what you want, you've established in the past you have strong ties with your 360, and if that's what you think is best, then that's what you think is best.

Edit: Here, try these games out.

WipEout HD (it's $20, but fantastic)
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
Metal gear Solid 4
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Resistance: Fall of Man (visually average, but extremely impressive from a technical standpoint)
MotorStorm (great rental)
Unreal Tourney 3 (PS3 Mod Support = Awesome)
Hot Shots Golf (Fun game for multiple people)
Buzz! Quiz TV (awesome party game)

Movies that look amazing

PotC movies (any of them)
Pixar Movies (any of them)
Crank
Stranger than Fiction
A Scanner Darkly
Planet Earth (mind blowing)
The Simpsons (also mind blowing)

There are many more, but those are just the ones off of the top of my head.

I was underwhelmed with mine at first too and I felt like I wasted the money as well (except I paid $600). Once you play around with it a bit it gets better and even if you don't end up liking the gaming aspect of it you have a Blu-Ray the you can update. I use mine a majority of the time a media centre. Blu-Ray films are great and the DVD upscaling is nice as well.

If you prefer the gaming aspect on the 360 then there isn't much to worry since many games are out for both systems. Although you'll now be able to get some of the exclusives that are rather promising.

There's nothing to not like about the system its self. the XMB is great the PSN is free and its a blu ray player. If you give up before trying little big planet and Motorstorm 2 you may regret taking bacK. Had it only for a few hours and it doesn't seem worth it? You can benefit from having both consoles.

Enable "Full range" in the hdmi video options. It makes a difference. But no one can make you like it. Being a late bloomer can always have negative results. I had a 360 for one year before selling it mostly because of Xbox live silver being a joke and I did not use it enough to justify the cost no mater what that cost.

I was never underwhelmed with mine at all, I thought it was great even when I bought it which was ages ago and there were like no AAA titles out yet.

It all depends on what you were expecting from the system. There are people on these boards that would say the same thing about the 360 or Wii.

I wasnt expecting much at first... which is why I wasnt dissapointed.. I knew the PS3 was having an uneasy start and I knew I was literally buying a machine with nothing else... If people have thier expectations too high then of course your going to be dissapointed. I just got it early because I wanted all the guts it was supposed to have before Sony started changing things.

As for getting one now I would find it very hard to see how you could be dissapointed because there loads of good stuff for it now.

When I got mine I expect a ton from it and it just didn't deliver for me. The Blu-Ray's were really the only saving grace for a while. I can sort of see where CB69 is coming from though, I, like him, was an avid 360 player before switching to the PS3. The 360 is built to do one thing well and that's play games, but the PS3 is built more to be a home entertainment centre with many more media options.

As I've said I play music, movies, other videos, display pictures, etc. with the PS3 more then I play games on it. Sure I have games for it but if I can get it for the 360 I'll typically go that route. Although I have a couple games for the PS3 that are multi-platform, but they are used.

So really it's no ones fault but your own that you don't play a lot of games for your PS3, because you buy them for your 360. Case closed.

This isnt the debate. The debate is justifying spending 400 dollars on another game system that will cause no greater joy than the one he already has. If Blu ray isnt important to him, if he doesnt mind spending money for internet service, if he isnt interested in any PS3 exclusives, then why would he keep the PS3. But more importantly, if those things dont matter, why did he bother buying it in the first place?

I put a good solid 7-8 hours into GT5P and I have to say its very fun. I also got through the C and B events and started the A events. The online play is actully quite fun too. I dont like the fact that when you get rammed into the side it gives you the penalty but that only happened a couple times to me. Other than that I think they have a pretty good start on GT5 online.
I usually never drive on the inside view but this inside view felt very real and I found myself actually driving with the inside view quite a bit. I was really impressed when I bought the Z06 Corvette and noticed it had the heads up display on the windshield. Nice attention to detail for sure.
There seems to be a faint vertical bar that goes thrugh the screen all the time. Not sure what that is but I cant seem to get rid of it. I wonder if its a bad HDMI cable.
I am going to check out some more PS3 games since I have unlimited rentals for the month. Also cant wait to watch Cars in blu ray tonight. :)
EDIT: Am I supposed to have orange at the bottom of my desktop? It has black all over the screen with orange at the bottom.

The vertical line down the very center of your HDTV set could be the fault of your TV, or the PS3 since you only have a 1080i HDTV set.

1080i is interlaced, 30HZ for the left side, 30HZ for the right so somewhere in the chain the set is not displaying the image properly. Try your PS3 on a different 1080i set, if possible. But first, check all PS3 and TV display settings.

Change you're setting to 720p. And never again buy cheap HDTVs.... PS3 deserves TRUE HD TV to have best pic, because it is only console with TRUE HD.
You think you will return you're PS3 after 30 days? In 30 days heck load of SOLID PS3 exclusives are to come out.. SOCOM is soon in few weeks.
Even if you do not like it after a month, keep it. If you love you're XBOX you will love this PS3... just get use to it ;)

I set it to 720p and the moving vertical bar went away. However it looks much better in 1080i so i am just going to leave it that way. The bar is barely noticable only when the entire TV is black. Also after further investigation, it only seems to show up on loading screens and the dashboard so not a big deal.
I have never had a problem on the 360 with 1080i but I play that with component cables.
I rented Heavenly sword.
Edit: Is it common for the PS network to disconnect once in a while? The PS3 seems to shut our router off or disconnect the router connection.

Yup PS3 needs good HD TV since its only console to be true HD ;)

I use to get disconnections on my PS3 at beginning when i got my PS3 about a year ago. The thing you can do to fix it is to reset settings from you're PS3 online connection. That should fix it right up... Since then I have not been disconnected more then once :)

So what games did you play on you're PS3? Hmm... if you like to, another good game to rent is LAIR, now there is a patch that you can download to use Controller sticks to fly the dragons and no more SIXAXIS :) enjoy the BEST game everyone missed out on. As well get uncharted, really really amazing games graphically and game play wise..
MGS4 that is a must buy...

I'm pretty sure my 360 does HD.

Um, not really sure but I think that what the 360 does is upscaling the signal.

Nope, not common for me, that only happens way too late at night but it happens even with the computer so I know the PS3 is no t to blame.

Please explain that one to me, unless of course you are talking about TrueHD from the Dobly Corporation.

When I mean TRUE HD, PS3 needs a good HD TV to be best with and is only system that can produce a 1080p FULL HD unlike Xbox's Upscale to 1080p. . I do not meant Dolby Corporation lol...

If you have some coloration at the bottom of the screen, it is possibly your HDMI cable. My suggestion would be to test it out and see if it remains with other HDMI cables. Also, the bar is probably happening because of the way the PS3's 1080i output and the way your TV receives that signal. You may want to try to enable HDMI Full Range (if it's supported by your HDTV) and see if that will resolve the problem (more than likely it will help to mask it).

Lastly, if you are having somewhat random disconnects from the PSN, it's due to a router conflict. The easy way to fix it is simply disable Media Server under the network options and you will be good to go, should end any random disconnects.

Hopefully that all helps you out!

The 360 also needs a good HDTV to look the best. And there aren't that many 1080P games out there for the PS3.

WipEout HD
Pixel Junk Eden
Pixel Junk Monsters
flOw
Calling All Cars
The Last Guy
SSHD
LocoRoco

Then there's a host of games that all upscale to 1080p or 1080i. Even those that upscale 1080p (i.e. GT5P) look better than 720p.

Thanks again for the replies. I watched Cars last night in 1080i and it was incredible. I was blown away. I simply could not believe how awesome that movie looked. I cant imagine any movie looking better than that on blu-ray.
I played up to the 2nd main sword blade (2nd main level) in Heavenly Sword and thats an amazing game. I ended up getting stuck on the guy that has the knives that look like feathers on his back so today I took that back and rented Lair, Uncharted, and Resistance Fall Of Man. I have already rented most of the exclusive titles so after I get through all the exclusives I will probably play re-rent GT5P and Heavenly sword again. I also rented the movie Open Season. Should be set for a while now. I still cant believe how incredible Cars looked in 1080i. 👍
List moved to first post.

You need to rent Planet Earth and Ratatouie. Also, check out the Pirates films, probably some of the best non-animated content you can watch. Simpsons movie is also good demo material.

Good thing you try so many great games, but I think you are RUSHING into it.. usually people buy one game at a time and try to beat it. That way they are not getting BORED with it.. Seems if you continue to rent few games a week, you will become bored rather quickly.
