Well for a 16 year old car I don't think its so bad. Also a lot of the car has been rebuilt and fixed so it should be fine.
Whatever works for you.

Even though everything but the Focus's I look at are like 90,000 miles

You said 1992 GTI, right?

Lets see, thats going to be the last year for the MKII models, and they were generally pretty reliable. The 8V was a pretty good engine as well, they held up well for the most part... You've got 105 BHP to play with there, but its more about the chassis dynamics than straight-line performance.

Keep an eye on the transmission too, they can go out without warning, like what happened to me.

The big thing to remember with VWs is this: Be ready to pay big bucks for parts and insurance, but otherwise, they're some of the best cars you can own.

Sweet, thanks YSSMAN. I am going over to the guys house to check out the car most likely tonight after 5 and hopefully get it checked by a mechanic. The only thing is I am not sure if the owner will allow the car to be taken to the Exxon station where my family get our cars fixed. But if all goes well I am going to have my first car by about the end of the week! Also I do believe the car might be modified and such so it may be a little bit more powerful but we'll see.

Yea I kind of like the stock wheels that are on it... My first think I want to do if I get it is lower it a bit and maybe some bbs's or something like that, and take off the window visors.

You think perfectly!

I don't think anything will ever go my way! I called the owner and said he won't be home from work until late. Then I said that before I buy it I need to get the car inspected by our mechanic at the shop, then he mentions that the car can't be moved becasue its not insured and it doesn't have any plates. We need to get the car to the shop because we want the underside inspected and get a full look over. If this guy expects anyone to get this car he has to figure out a way to let people test drive it and get it checked out.:indiff: This sucks.

Just put on old plate in the back window, and hope to god you don't come across a cop! :scared:

Get a set of lowering springs/shocks, a bronze set of three-piece BBS wheels, and switch out the grille... Thats all you need to make a nice-looking GTI.

You could always hire a towtruck to bring it to the mechanics so they can look it over. It would cost maybe 100 bucks, but it would be worth it if they found any problems with it.

Ok, today I went to talk to the owner and got to check out the car up close.
The car hadn't been turned on in over a month, and it started right up. The body is in good condition minus a minor dent right up by the left front headlight on the side of the car. No visible rust and the interior was pretty clean even without a headliner or radio(wiring is there). The car has new breaks, alternator, heating block, clutch, engine(8 valve), euro taillights and exhaust(off an 16 valve). Also the engine has a neuspeed air intake. From what I can tell the car is in good condition and the only thing I should do is get new oil because the car hasn't been driven since before x mas. Tomorrow my dad is going to come check out the car with me so hopefully I will know by tomorrow what is happening.

Some more pics

Even a stick! Nice car. I'm pretty jealous right now. I'm sure the car will be absolutely amazing to toss around corners. GTIs aren't super quick in the straight, but amazing in the turns.

Like what YSSMAN said, swap out the grille for one with four lights, lower and get some awesome rims and that will be an awesome looking ride. 👍 EDIT: And get a red stripe for that grille. :sly:

Are you the only other one on here with a GTI now?

Well I don't quite have it yet my dad still has to check it out, and so does a mechanic. But this is the closest I have ever come in the car buying process.👍 Also the owner says he has the euro 4 light grill but they wont pass inspection but I think he will put them in with the deal. If I do get this car he is going to include a lot of parts.

Today was a bust and somewhat of a success. Well I drove my dad past the car before the owner was home and he looked at it and came to the decision that is was crap. He doesn't want me having a old car without a warentee. So we were talking about it a bit and he said this weekend (tonight he had to do stuff) he'll talk to the owner and we will hit up some used car dealerships and look at some newer cars that could have some bit of warentee. We still are going to talk to the mkII owner but its probably going to be a bust. I think we are going to hit up the vw used lot and look at some mkIV gti's that are reasonably priced. I'll keep you guys updated.

*warranty... Sorry.

Anyway, sad to hear that things may not work out with the MKII. They're good cars, generally fairly reliable, but best of all very easy to work on. At the right price, it would be a great project/track car, but I could very well agree that the whole "daily driving" thing may not be the best idea. It always depends on how committed you are to cars like that...

Per the question of an MKIV Golf (or Jetta)...

Its best to avoid anything with a 1.8T (turbo) made before 2003, and any GTI without the 1.8T or the VR6 is NOT a GTI. Period. They made GTIs with the MKIV body for a short period of time with the 2.0L 8V, and I suggest skipping those altogether. If you are looking at a 1.8T model, ask if they have most (if not all) of the records for the car. The engines can be very picky, and the turbos are known to go out if not properly maintained. Also, transmissions can be problematic as well, but AFAIK, they are spotty at best. The 5-speed Tiptronic seems to be fairly bullet-proof however.

The odd thing about MKIV models is that they've managed to hold their value exceptionally well despite the often questionable build quality. In many cases you'd nearly be able to step into a brand-new MKV Rabbit or Jetta for the same price as a used MKIV GTI or GLI.

...Speaking of GLI...

I believe insurance prices are going to be cheaper on the Jetta (GLI) version, but I cannot guarantee that. As always, the GLX was often just as capable (especially with the VR6), however I often think that the GLS was the "sweet-spot" when it came to the meeting point of sport and comfort. A 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T with a 5-speed Tiptronic should run you about $10K with a decent amount of miles on it, so just be on the lookout of prices that seem a bit high... Always be willing to undercut them, and bring proof. Dealers hate it when you're right, but its the only way you're not going to get over-charged because of their claims of "low miles" and "great fuel economy."

...Oh, and did I mention that the 1.8T drinks premium? You may want to consider that first...

Sounds good. I was just looking at 2003+ gti's and found them in the on average about 13 grand. Also I only want a 5 or 6 speed trans if I get one. One more question is the older vr6 mkIV's unreliable too?

Guess who is the knew owner of a 2008 VW Gti 6speed!:dopey::dopey::dopey:

Yep me! Me and my dad went to the dealership to look at the used cars but we soon realized that buying a used car was a lot more expensive than we thought. First we test drove a red mkiv 1.8t gti with the 5 speed and it was really nice but then we drove the 2008 and it was soo much better. After 3 hours (yes three) my dad got the dealer down to a 260.00 per month 36 month lease with 12,000 miles per year. Thats almost half of what it was origionally. So in the end I have to pay only like 9100 dollars. Also I have to pay 120 a month for insurance so I have to pay 380 every month. I am going to need some more hours at work and maybe another job.:dunce:

A bit about the car. Its a 2008 white 2.0t gti with a 6 speed manual trans.
It really has no options except a sunroof and monster mats. We got it with 200 miles so I only have 800 to go to break it in. Today is also the first day driving a stick besides a parking lot, and I really am getting good at it. I did stall a few times but only like 4 times over about 3 hours. I'm also getting good at rolling slowly like backing up and just at a red light behind a car. The sound of the engine is amazing and is just all around a great car.👍

More info soon!

Wow! Thats actually a really good deal!

Were they trying to give them away?

Thats about how much my Mazda will cost when I get around to ordering it...

Congrats!

Yea my dad is a salesman worst enemy lol. We were there for for so long just haggling and everytime we got a new offer my dad would send it back to see how far they would go. Lol, he trains me to be like him every time we go to a dealership I can't show emotion or be too specific to start than lie and whip out the math skillz. Actually my dad works in sales so he know ways around things.
