It certainly would be nice if the cars weighed less, but if it still drives similarly to how it would if it was a lighter car, I certainly wouldn't be too bothered by it. Don't get me wrong, I'd still love to own a MKI GTI simply because it's light and I imagine a joy to drive, but a 3500 pound car that handles like it's on rails is perfectly good.

That and with all the new safety, emissions and comfort standards, it is getting extremely difficult to make a light weight car.

I cant see the VW getting 211hp engine for a while. Its the valvelift technology of audi that gives it the extra 14hp, although VW will be utilising the EA888 architecture 2.0T which considerably reduces emissions, but shouldnt without the valvelift see 211hp. I reckon 1.5 years from now we will see a R scirrocco.

According to VW insiders who spoke with Autocar, the Golf GTI will get 11hp more for a total of 211hp. Increase in power is a result of VW's new global 2.0-liter turbo EA888 engine, which is equipped with Audi's new variable valve-lift system.

The problem is, VW knows they could have cut the weight out with this new generation. Sure, it would be very un-VW to go back to the rather "flimsy" days of the MKII-MKIII, but it would be great to see the cars dip south of 3000 lbs again. That, and to see them ditch the 2.5L I5 in the American cars. Bring back an I4, please...

Autocar arent too reliable a source, and IIRC the Leon FR's and Golf GTI's are already getting the new EA888 architecture engine 2.0T but they dont have 211hp therefore I believe autocar has got it wrong. Only 2 audi models, the A4 and A5 iirc have got the valvelift 211hp engine at the moment.

Golf audi S3 equivelant seems to be true. Audi are going to make a RS3 now to keep the chain of command. Hopefully this will se the return of the 4wd leon, and a leon cupra at that.

This is the first time I've said a whole lot in favor of SEAT in awhile...

But a 4WD, turbocharged Leon would be one more great way to stick it to the Rally Twins. Make it a Golf for markets without SEAT, and you've got yourself a deal.

I thus have three letters left for VAG.

W. R. C.

Two things wrong with that theory:

1. They aren't going to want to put the extra money into making a WRC Golf and Leon.

2. I'd guess that the rally twins' biggest market is the US and Asia, which are two places SEAT conveniently doesn't sell. I think VAG would put those markets first, which would point to a WRC Golf if anything.

Wait, I thought VAG had some involvement in the WRC already? Don't any of you remember the Skoda Fabia a few years ago? I think they still do compete in the WRC, but under a privateer team. But they didn't have much success in the WRC, so I think that was the reason why the works team pull out of the championship. Also I think having SEAT in the WRC is a waste of money, as the SEAT has been really successful in the WTCC and the BTCC recently and planning on improving on that.

The VW on the other hand, are competing in the Super 1600 category right? I remember they do have some cars compete in rallying, don't know much about that now......

The Scirocco is a FAIL and so is this...

How do you go from this to above... ?

I hope this is a Golf...

I may be mistaken but one of the rally twins biggest markets is the UK, and the one of the biggest markets for SEAT's top of the line Cupra range is also the UK.

SEAT used to dominate in the super 1600 category when they ran the mk3 ibiza.

Oh yeah..... totally forgot about that one. :dunce: It was in CMR IIRC, was a good car to drive.... 👍

You can now configure your own Golf VI (Auf Deutsch).

Interesting they have a Seattle sports package. Does that include a roof rack, raised and toughened suspension and beefier all terrain tires? My German isn't good enough to comprehend most of the stuff, but it looks like it'll probably generally be the same stuff as the Golf V.

I wish I could read the stuff, too...get all the fun goodies and nothing unneeded.

Perhaps the U.K. configurator's not far behind.

Like the 2009 VW Golf VI, the 2009 VW Golf GTI is a lot like the old car, just a little bit better. Power comes courtesy of the same EA888 2.0-litre turbo used in the Edition 30 MK V, making 207 HP and 206 Lb-Ft. Looks-wise VW wanted to make the new GTI looks lower and meaner than the MKV. Thank the wide lower air dam for that. Of course, the question in everyone’s mind is: how fast is it?

0-60 come in at a somewhat disappointing 7.2 seconds, while it’ll hit a top speed of 149 MPH. Handling will be boosted by DCC active damping.

There’s also talk of both a 265 HP 4WD R-version to replace the outgoing R32 — the new one will use a turbo-four instead of the heavy V6 — while VW itself is hinting at a GTI version of the 2009 VW Scirocco. Please VW, bring the Scirocco GTI stateside, we’ve been extra good this year.

Very nice, but not radically different. It will still be one of the best cars you can buy for less than $25K, I think that is true... But we need the Scirocco.

Scirocco? The front of that looks very much the same as the Scirocco. Close enough?

Typo? I can get to 60 in 6.3. I doubt VW would let the MKVI GTI be a second slower to 60 than the MKV.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'd have to say the MKV looks better too. Especially without the super-bland rear of the MKVI Golf. The front doesn't really do it for me either. But I bet it'll look better in studio shots. It's good knowing I have an example of the fastest and best looking of the new GTIs.

And I saw this on VWVortex earlier today. I guess some of the guys over there were thinking this was just a rendering...

What about replacing the 2-door new Golf with the Scirocco? Keep the 4 door Golf, and the 4 door Golf GTI. Replace all the 2 door Golfs with the equivalent variants of the Scirocco.

I couldn't see them offering a 3-door Scirocco in lieu of a 3-door Golf. GTI, maybe, but not the Golf.

I don't exactly see the point of the Scirocco, it's just basically a slightly more good looking (That is an opinion, so I wouldn't expect everyone to agree here obviously) 3 door Golf. All I can assume is that it will phase out the 3 door Golf. And anyway, that Golf GTI photo posted about dosen't look too different to the Scirocco, so either way, I personally don't mind it replacing the Golf 3 door.

Well I probably think the Scirocco is the performance hatchback while the Golf is more of a everyday use hatchback. (or a normal one if that doesn't sound right) Also, is the Scirocco only available in Europe so far? As for the Golf IV, it does look "a little" better than the V, but albeit, a little "bland". :indiff: That GTI could almost be mistaken for a normal Golf without any big distinguishes. At least the mk V has those black front bumpers to tell it apart, but this one only has a GTI badge and dual exhaust. (well, that could be the only way you can tell the difference)

So is there any news about an R32 appearing? Should be interesting which hatchback will get the ultimate performance model on the line up.......

You just kinda have to learn to spot them. The MKVs were pretty easy to see from the front, and you just had to develop the eye for sorting between Golfs and GTIs.

As for the R32, look for a GTI-R with a 270 hp 2.0T (I wonder how long that engine will run for...) to be the Golf variant of the R-line.

Jalopnik got it wrong. The Ed 30 didnt use the EA888 design engine I believe and it had 230hp.

Id say 265hp.

And some magazines already claim that the next sporty AWD golf could have 5 cyl turbo instead of the 2l turbo. I definitely wouldn't mind.. discontinuing the R32 is a sin.

When will they get rid of those ugly rims?

I'd be surprised if the new Mk6 GTi had the same rims as the out-going Mk5 GTi. They've always had a new wheel design for each new version of the Golf so far.

I don't like it... Its to similar to the old one and this has a ugly grill me thinks. And its too roundy.. lol. I needs more sharper lines like the original.

The word is that the "R32" designation will otherwise disappear, and be changed permanantly to a Golf R-Type, or something along those lines. I can't see them abandoning AWD or DSG in there, but as far as engines go, I'd be more impartial to a 3.6L V6 than anything else. BUT, it may be too big by days end. We'll see. The closer to 300 BHP, the better.

RE: Point of a Scirocco

While it may be nothing more than a dressed up Golf/GTI, I don't see any issue with it. People like to buy cars that are styled a bit better, may drive a bit better, all for a nominal increase in price. You can make the same argument over the Celica, which otherwise was a re-skinned Corolla. Or for that matter, the Integra/RSX, which was nothing more than a re-bodied Civic.

I'd be more apt to go for a Scirocco than a GTI just because its "different," not to mention the fact I've already got a 2+2 Coupe. Nevertheless, it just seems like a superior product by days end. Now that they're probably going to sell one with a TDI option, at least in my mind, that only makes it more appealing.
